WILLIE HURT 1946 - 1978 PILOT DEN The only pilots that were with Ray Wilson were Art Sinclair, Bert Clark, Jug Jella, Willie Hurt, Johnny Myers, Don Bridie and Warren Heckman. There may have been others but not with Monarch/Frontier. -Ace Avakian (2/22/00) John Stark and Willy Hurt used to fly into North Platte. We were always glad to see them and Willy got out to help load pit three a couple of times. He was strong as a bull. They would always let you ride the jump seat then and were a lot of fun. -Duane Franklin (8/15/05) I have flown with Willie, Matt, and Sam. All great guys. I hear Willie's health is poor. He and my dad were friends back in the 30s. Willie was one of the pilots involved in the rescue of George Hopkins who parachuted on top of Devil's Tower, Wyoming . You can Google that. -Billy Walker (6/19/08) W R HURT Pilot seniority date of 8/20/46 on the 10/28/67 & 9/1/72 FL/ALEA seniority lists. -Jake Lamkins (6/19/08) I can remember as a copilot flying with Capt. Willie Hurt on this particular routing, picking up so much ice that the intake above the cowling of the engine was about the size of a fifty-cent piece!!! That's how much ice we picked up on our airplane. -Ace Avakian (9/21/09) FLacebook: FL's first hijacking took place April 13, 1972 at ABQ. Willie Hurt retired in 1978 and lives at Mead, CO now at age 92. He gets the FL newsletter to stay in touch. Buddy Head died last month Dec 2, aged 80. No info on Gilliam or the three FAs. Post any info you have about them. -Jake Lamkins (1/25/11) Willy Hurt was a pistol of a captain. Loved to park himself and not pay any attention to how you wanted to park him. He use to fly flight 106 (DEN-OMA-LNK-GRI) and back on flight 101. I was on a flight he aborted take-off in DEN and taxied right up to the hanger to have MM change a bypass filter. We arrived 20 minutes late into LNK. -Mike White (1/26/11) W R HURT DEN captain per the Nov 1955 Frontier Roster. Such a great guy, excellent pilot, and someone to emulate! My dad said Willie was a great guy when he knew him in the 1930s. Willie flew for legendary Clyde Ice. Both Willie and my Dad dropped sandwiches to George Hopkins on top of Devil's Tower, Wyoming in 1941. It was quite a news event when Hopkins parachuted on top of DT then couldn't get down. It took several days to rescue the SOB... That's when my dad and Willie struck up a friendship. I remember flying with Willie and him telling me about that. Willie was the captain of the first one of two hijacked at FAL. Jay Curtis was the other. -Billy Walker (5/16/16) Remember well. . -Karen Davidsaver (5/16/16) Prayers to his family and many friends. -Trish Swanson-Hawk (5/16/16) I will never forget this Gentleman. He was the pilot on one of our first flight to Puerto Vallarta. We were approaching the city and he called me to the cockpit and asked if I could speak Spanish. I advise him a little. He said we can't get the tower to acknowledge us. I attemped to contact them and didn't get an answer. So Willie said I guess we will just buzz the tower. Well, he did and the controller came on and in a very excited voice asked us what we wanted. Willie very calmly said the we would like to land. Landing granted. This was during our charter service days in 1968. -Buck Hawk (5/16/16) Remember him well! -Beverly Armando (5/17/16) Good ol Willie! -Bonnie Dahl (5/17/16) I remember him well.
