SMOKEY GROTH 1948 - 1956 : 1957 - 1964 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT, STATION MANAGER GJT PHX FLG BIL COS STL R.W. (Bob) Fish Apr 5, 1921 - Jul 3, 2007 Long time FL employee, agent John Koehler called 7-4-07 to inform me that our FL friend and fellow employee passed away 7-3-07. Bob Fish was hired by PHXFL (temporary manager) Smokey Groth on 10-31-51 as an agent. He remained in PHXFL until the FL shutdown 8-24-86; almost 35 years. Smokey Groth was on leave from his "chief agent" position in GJT. -Cal Reese (7/14/07) C J GROTH BIL senior station agent Per the Nov 1955 Frontier employees roster. He is not on the Feb 1960 or Dec 1970 Frontier employees rosters. He appears in four Central Skywriters articles 1959-63. Then I found him on a CN seniority list starting there in 1957 and last reference is STL CN manager in Oct 1963. -Jake Lamkins (1/5/20) Lucy Madelyn Cassinat Record information. Birth 17 Jun 1925 Rawlins, Carbon, Wyoming, USA Marriage 29 Jun 1952 Bernalejo, Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí, Mexico Residence 1955 Billings, Yellowstone, Montana, USA Death Sep 1962 Record information. My initial research got sidetracked because her mother has the same name. The ancestry item (above) notes her marriage to Smokey Groth whom I found to have flown west too. They married Jun 29, 1952 so I have assumed that's when she quit Frontier and moved to Billings MT where Smokey was based with Frontier. Then I found a news item (below) about Smokey getting married again in 1956 so their marriage did not last long. That's probably about the time Smokey left Frontier. -Jake Lamkins (1/6/20) RECEIVE LICENSE SHERIDAN, WY A marriage license was issued at the office of the Sheridan county clerk to Charles Junior Groth, 30, and Nancy Otteson, 20, both of Billings. -https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/409828632/ -The Billings Gazette from Billings, Montana, March 14, 1956 (1/6/20) This article is too garbled to reprint but it reports an air show at Flagstaff in which Frontier president C. A. Myhre is presented a scroll and the master of ceremonies is C. J. (Smokey) Groth. I'm working on his memorial webpage and need info. I just found he flew west in 1973. -Jake Lamkins (1/6/20) Jake, Smokey Groth had already left STL when I arrived. I think Jim Mustain held things together between STM change. Wish I could provide more. Sorry to hear of his death. -Ray Marney (1/6/20) Thanks, Ray. Did he leave Central when he left STL? I have an Oct 1963 article showing him STL STM and an Apr 1964 item noting you STL STM so he left STL between those two dates. I'll figure he left in early 1964. -Jake Lamkins (1/6/20) Almost certain that he left Central -Ray Marney (1/6/20) Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives Monday, October 01, 1973 - Page 8 GROTH — Charles J. Smokey may be the only employee to work for three of the five airlines that made up Frontier. Still need an obituary for him and a better photo. -Jake Lamkins (1/9/20)
