SHERMAN CORNSTUBBLE 1955 - 1986 AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, INSPECTOR, LEAD INSPECTOR GSW DEN FL mechanic S. Vernon Cornstubble passed away Sat 11/13/99 - retired from FL -Wayne Holder (11/14/99) I knew a Sherman Cornstubble but not a Vernon. He was an inspector for Central at GSW and then moved to DEN with the rest of us. He had cancer and had his voice box removed. He talked with a vibrator that he held up to the side of his throat to speak. He had a hole in his throat that helped him breathe and wore a cloth over it to help keep foreign objects out of his throat. They tried to deny boarding on a few ocasions because he didn't have on a tie. All he did was show them his hole in his throat and talk to them with his vibrator. He stayed in DEN for several years but had to leave because of his health. I hadn't heard from him for several years but was in Ft Worth the last time I heard of him. Could we be talking about the same man? I can't say there wasn't a Vernon Cornstubble but the one that I knew was called Sherman Cornstubble. If anyone knows anything about old "Sherm", please let us know. -Bill Castleman (11/14/99) It's probably the same guy. Wayne Holder, who lives in the DFW area, sent me the info. He's checking on an obituary and more info. Gotta be the same. I'll post info when I get it. -Jake Lamkins (11/14/99) Sherman V. Shannon North Funeral Chapel 111 W. Northside Drive, 624-2191 -FT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM (11/15/99) I guess I did know Vernon Cornstubble after all. I'm glad I didn't lie to you because I only knew as Sherman. He was a good inspecter. He really knew his job. If he red Xed your work, it was legitimate. -Bill Castleman (11/17/99) My mother Shirley Shackelford worked in reservations for CEN at the Greater southwest airport in the early 60's. She worked the grave yard shift, being a single mother it was hard for her to find a sitter, working those hours. That was the first time I met Sherman - he used to babysit me on grave yard. He'd stick me in the back of a DC-3 in the hanger, give me a blanket. I remember that vibrating voice, "dont get out of this plane until I come and get ya or we'll all get fired!!!! Ya hear me Kid!!!." I was 4 or 5 years old at the time, with a voice like that I never got out of that plane. The last time I saw sherman was in DEN in 1979, I had just gotten hired on as a cleaner. He remembered me very well, he told me to go and get my A&P tickets, so I wouldn't be dumping crap the rest of my life. I was down in DEN last week, talking to some of the old mechanics who work for the new FAL, none of them knew if Sherman was alive or not. I always wanted to see him again, shake his hand and just say thanks for the advice. Its strange, 35 years later I can still see his face and have those memories in that hanger, like it just was yesterday. After FAL went under I joined the Navy, I work for Boeing now as Inspector. Thanks for the information. -Brad Shackelford (4/21/00) Apparently not related to DAL station agent Luther Cornstubble. S.V. Cornstubble is on the 5-02-15 ESOP Lost List so he was on an active status for FL in 1986 - probably medical.
