ROY SCHREDER 1967 - 1986 STATION AGENT MKC STL Glad to hear from you after so long. Am delighted to get updates on people I worked with and knew for so long. Was surprised to see the list of obituaries and how many that I knew are gone. Am sending check in mail today for subscription. Will try to get in touch with Logan in near future and pass on any info I find out. I am doing fine. Creemee closed in 1989, but we still use the term for E-mail. Easy to remember and everyone knows us as such. Betty spends more time on line than I do but she keeps me filled in and showed me how to find the FAL websites. I am working about 25-30 hrs per week as maintenance and groundskeeper at our parish church grounds and cemetery. Betty will retire this fall from a management position at our local hospital. Our children are spread out from Minnesota to Texas and we will soon have more time to travel and see them. Hope our health holds out a while yet. I had a quadruple bipass in 1995 and recovered totally with no problems since then. The work I do keeps me fit and I get paid to do the exercise I need. -Roy Schreder (7/29/01) I received the info about the ESOP and completed it and returned it. I should get about $200.00, which is that much more than I expected. Surprises do spring up occasionally. Thanks for the info. Always glad to keep up with anything going on. -Roy Schreder (4/19/02) Enclosed is my subscription check for Frontier News. I enjoy the News and love to read about experiences that agents remember with Frontier. Thought I would include some tidbits from my days with Frontier. On November 16, 1967 I was hired by Bob Brown in MKC when we worked out of the old MKC airport. Charles Harding was hired at the very same time. (We have remained friends through the years and still keep in contact occasionally.) The Assistant Ramp Manager was Lee Davis and my senior ramp agent was Larry Brandt. Paul Farris and some other really good agents worked the ramp on my team in MKC. After six months I transferred to STL because that is near my home in Illinois. Tom Schuhardt and I often carpooled to work from Belleville. The first person I met in STL was Logan Wilmoth, who was a senior agent there. Bob Brown had become manager in STL, the Assistant Managers were Bob Dirksen and Jim Mustain. I remained in STL until the shutdown in August '86. (I continued with Continental in STL until I retired in '93.) Logan taught me how to work ops and I loved it, but I had trouble overgrossing the planes because at that time STL was running heavy with passengers and cargo and I wanted to carry the maximal load. Finally Jim Mustain taught me how to preplan loads and solved the problem. In my early days in STL we were waiting for a flight to arrive when one of the new hire agents stated, For two cents I'd quit. Someone gave him two cents and he walked off as the flight arrived. Many interesting, good people were working for FL during those years. In my opinion Frontier had the best flight crews in the airline industry. I remember Captain Avakian and also Captain Tom Morhouse, who once landed a B737-200 without flaps. That was a hot landing! (I think the latter was a colonel in Missouri Airforce National Guard.) I'll reminisce more another time. -Roy Schreder (9/12/02) Thanks for the $ and your support of the FL NEWS. Your note brought back many memories. I was there when the guy walked out for 2 cents. I was SSA and that left us short on the crew. We were so far behind the pay of the other carriers then it was hard to keep help. The 1970 contract helped get us caught up. When I got to STL in June 1968, Jim Shores was acting manager because he had relieved George Slivka of his job as STL manager. Shores ran things for a few months until Bob Brown came in. Bob had been LIT manager many years before he ended up in MKC. What have you been doing since retirement? -Jake Lamkins (9/12/02) I did not remember that you were on duty when the 2 cent deal went down. You and I came to STL about the same time and we did have some good times together, didn't we! It sure would be nice to get with you at a reunion sometime. I know it would be a blast. Jerry Baltz always brings up some funny stories when we get together. Bob Brown is retired as is Don Sorenson. I am working parttime as grounds and maintenance person at our parish church here in Hecker. My wife retired last November and we do a lot of things together. Our family is spread from Minnesota to SAT and we visit them whenever we can. See you in the next FAL News. -Roy Schreder (9/14/02) Hey Jake, I'm sending my subscription renewal and also to tell about an experience I had in STL. We had a 727-200 at the gate and we filled it up with passengers and cargo, a full load. The A.P.U. was not working so we gave the engines an air start with the G.P.U. I decided to do the push out from the gate. I beat the other agents to the push tractor and got ready to push but could not move the aircraft with the engines running, so I told the crew we had to get T.W.A. with a bigger push tractor. The Captain then said he would open the reversers and that would help. I agreed and when he opened the reversers I don't think I did any pushing, he backed us away from the gate, and when we got out on the ramp to disconnect I told the Captain to close the reversers and we stopped, disconnected and the flight left. Some time later the same thing happened with an M.D. 80 only this time when I couldn't move the M.D. 80 I ask the Captain if he would open the reversers to help back away from the gate, he agreed and away we went same as before with him pulling me along out to the ramp to disconnect, it worked both times as slick as a whistle. I wonder if any other agent had that same experience. Sometime I'll tell you about the time I watched a CV 580 landing in STL with one engine. I read the FL news from cover to cover and really enjoyed A Christmas story by Barb Womack in this past winter issue, since I remember the many Christmases at the airport. Roy Schreder STL ops and ramp agent from Nov. 16, 1967 to Aug. 1986 (What a sad day!) (1/23/04) Subject: Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays Just a note to let you all know I still think about you and wish the best for you at the holidays and always. I still miss the airline jobs and wish I was young enough to do it again, but time marches on and on and on. We had a new grandson, a great-grandson, and a great-granddaughter this year. Our family keeps growing. Betty loves it and baby sits fairly often. I'm an old grouch and would prefer the quiet of the two of us in house, But I do love those little ones, just not for too long a time. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and I wish all the best for you and yours this next year. Remember FAL! -Roy Schreder (12/18/04) Hi Roy and STL crew, It's always good to hear from the STL gang. My years there, 1968-70, seem a lifetime ago. But I have many fond memories of the friends from then. I hope your Holidays are the best ever. Keep in touch. -Jake Lamkins (12/18/04) Thanks, Roy. Hope your holiday season is the best. Nice to hear about your grand kids and great grands too. Yes it would be nice to go back to FAL. My short stay at United fell short of success. The job was okay but the pay didn't cut it. It was nowhere near what I made at Frontier. Also I was only part time and there was supposed to be all kinds of overtime. Problem was getting in the other 20 hrs before I could get any OT. They were very preditory about letting their employees work another job. I almost lost my house. Happy holidays to you and everybody on this distribution list. -Chuck Tisckos (12/20/04) I see Jim Hargis once in awhile. The last time I saw him was at the funeral home when George Hayes was laid out. Yours, -Roy Schreder (3/18/09) I have been retired from CO since '94 and I miss the airline business still. It's amazing how many people have passed away. I'm glad you let us know. I look forward to the newsletter but sometimes it's depressing to read about those who have passed. I like to hear the people's stories. -Roy Schreder (12/16/09) Jake, A couple of years ago there were some pictures of tombstones in the Gone West section of FAL Newsletter. I cannot locate that, could you help me out. How are you doing? I still remember the good old days in STL! Roy Schreder (6/1/16) Hi Roy, Great hearing from you! I'm not sure which tombstones you mean. The ones with Frontier aircraft on them? All's well here - hope you are too. -Jake Lamkins (6/2/16) Jake, this is Betty Schreder, Roy's wife, corresponding. Roy has wanted a model of a Frontier airplane for a long time. Do you have any or know where this would be available? -Betty Schreder (7/22/19) Hi Betty, Yes, Ebay.com has them every so often. They have a neat Boeing 727 Frontier model for sale now. Go to http://Ebay.com and put "Frontier Airlines" in the search engine. Lots of great Frontier memorabilia for sale there.
