RED BARRINGER 1956 - 1962/1964 - 1986 STATION AGENT, STATION MANAGER RIW CYS MLS MSO SEA Jake, Enclosed is my 2002 contribution toward the continuation of the FL NEWS. The Spring issue was outstanding. I saw notes from several people that I have not heard from since the dark days of 1986. I recently had lunch in SLC with Larry Scofield, Duane Phelps and Howard Schatz. It was great re-living some of the past. I originally started with FL in RIW in 1956 - Ron Gildea was the manager (he passed away several years ago), then to CYS where Bob Anderson was manager (he also passed away several years ago), on to MLS where Steven Bird was manager. Due to staff reductions in 1962, I was off until the accident of flight 32 in 1964, then returned to work when Gene Martin was manager. Staff reductions again in 1968 and I moved to MSO where Bob Bricker was manager. Roger Lienau and Billy Hatfield then I were later managers in MSO. I moved to SEA as manager in 1981. After we closed in 1986, I worked for CO for 8 years, then finished my career with the new Frontier, retiring on 12/31/01. I am not sure if Bob Anderson or Ron Gildea are listed in the "gone west" and I am not sure of the dates of their passing. A RIW agent, Harold Long, recently passed on. Duane Phelps would be able to give you details as he attended the funeral. Still living in the MSO area are Roger Lienau, Bob Bricker, Ron Wagner (FCA), Bob Scott, Tom Schmidt and I. Thanks for keeping us all informed. -Red Barringer (4/29/02) Hello Jake: After seeing Gayle Bussinger's name appear in the last two news letters, I thought I would like to get the information you have on the MLS accident. I was in MLS when the accident occurred, and went to the crash site the next day. I have a few slides of the wreckage, and think it is time for me to get those out and try to get them on a CD. I have no idea how to go about doing that, but think I can find someone here that can give me some help. After 40 years I am not sure how bright and detailed the slides are, but if I can get them to a CD, let me know via e-mail if you would like a copy to share. I can give a fair description of how the event of the accident happened, and will include that if I can get a good copy of what I have. For your information, I started with FL in July 1956 in RIW, then to CYS and on to MLS. There was a manager and an agent in each of the cities in Montana, then in 1962 a decision was made to only have a manager in each city and a relief agent to cover days off for two cities. I did not have enough seniority to get the relief job between MLS and GDV and the only stations with openings were in GTF or HVR, so I jumped the gun and resigned and went into business in MLS. Within about a year, each city went back to having a manager and one agent. When the MLS accident happened and took the life of Gayle Bussinger, who was the MLS agent, I went back to work in MLS for Gene Martin exactly 2 years to the day that I resigned. Gayle had returned a rental car to BIL, and was going home, something that most of us used to do to earn a little extra money. Excellent article in the July issue by Hank Lund.. There will never be another airline like the original Frontier, because of the personalities involved in every department and the life long friends we all made. I really liked working for the present Frontier - and especially the opportunity to work for Hank again. I retired from the current Frontier (F9) in 2000, but went back to work again last November for 4 months as temporary VP of Customer Service until another person was selected to fill the position again. Thanks for keeping all of us updated and bringing up good old memories. -Red Barringer (7/19/04) Hello Jake: I finally have scanned and put the slides of the Miles City accident on a CD, and will mail it to you tomorrow. I also have enclosed a brief summary of how, but not the cause, the accident occurred. You can post or just make them available to whom ever would like to see them. I do not have the capability of putting captions with the pictures, but do have explanations of each of the 10 pictures on the note I enclosed. Thanks. -Red Barringer (12/10/04) Hi Red, That is great! I will add that info to the file I already have on the MLS accident and keep offering copies in the newsletter as a Frontier Report. -Jake Lamkins (12/10/04) Hi Red, Thanks so much for sending the MLS pix and your comments. It certainly adds to the historical record and I will add them to the Frontier Report on the accident so others can see them too. Best wishes for the Holidays, -Jake Lamkins (12/17/04) Thanks for the front page picture of "The end of SN61442". You provide outstanding coverage on lots of topics, and really keep us up to date on all of our group that has passed on. I usually pick up new contacts from each issue, this time Bob Hooper in Cody, Wyoming. He was stranded in SEA on the close down date, so I got him other airline passes to get back home. Really shocked to hear about Ann Yanulavich. I will also have to send a note to Bonnie Bias. Thanks for the coverage on the MLS pictures. -Red Barringer (1/22/05) Jake, Thanks so very much for keeping us all informed of the FL Family. Real shock to hear about both Gene Martin and Marty Martin. -Red Barringer (7/26/07) HENRY A BARRINGER (Age: 74) AURORA, CO MISSOULA, MT GILBERT, AZ RENTON, WA TAMPA, FL LINDA L BARRINGER JOHN JAMES BARRINGER -Intelius.com (7/26/07) Hi Red, Hope you are well. Just heard from Tony Illich. Wasn't he a SEA SSA the last years of FL? Did he come there from COD? Where all did you work besides RIW CYS MLS SEA? -Jake Lamkins (7/24/08) Hi Jake: Doing fine here. Tony Illich was in BZN for a while and he may have gone to either FCA or PDX, but was not in SEA. The only other place I worked was in MSO - between MLS and SEA. Was City Manager in MSO and SEA. -Red Barringer (7/26/08 Hello Jake: Another great edition of FL News. Coy Preece Oh no! Thank you Jake, my heart is heavy. This man was an idol and an amazing teacher. Joe Barker A great co-worker. Enjoyed some good times with Red - a real leader Roger Hendreschke Worked for Red in SEA, I most remember the day FL closed. Red's eyes were red and moist as he met his employees as we came to work on that Sunday morning. He had been there all night tearing the FL equipment down. But we still had a FL going out of business get together the following weekend. Red truly cared about his employees. Steve Tidler So sorry to hear... Bonnie Dahl God Bless you Henry. You were lucky to live in Missoula. Bob Harpin Awesome leader. Fred Watson R.I.P Red (12/30/24) Dave Jarvis Red was a very special person and it was an honor to work with him. Jeff Potter What a life, what a leader and such a great person. A pleasure working with Red while at Frontier - he was so instrumental in the early stages of (the new) Frontier and building much of the foundation that made the company so special...for the first 10 years. RIP Jim Holbrook Ah man. I really enjoyed working with Red. He liked to tease Barb when she was manager for F9 in SAN. Jake Lamkins Red was a HUGE help to me when I put together the article about the MLS DC-3 crash highlighted in the Winter 2005 Frontier News newsletter. He helped me many other times over the years. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News.html Patricia Trish Swanson-Hawk Prayers to his family and many friends. (12/31/24) Coy Preece Dec 31, 2024 At Red's obit My heart is saddened and very heavy to learn of his passing. I first met Red in Seattle, Washington - he was my manager when I transferred there from Vernal,Utah. Red was such an amazing Boss, but he was more than that he was a mentor and to me an idol. He got me into management my first time, apparently he could see in me what I couldn't see in myself. I'll always cherish him and Linda and their kindness toward me and my family. Red you have no idea the love and admiration I have for you! Rest in Peace, my friend. May God bless and keep your family safe while you are away.
