PETE LAMKIN 1956 - 1986 PILOT DEN HIS WIFE WAS FLIGHT ATTENDANT JAN CURRY LAMKIN Pete's wife Jan is in the 1979 Frontier Family Cookbook. It spells his name Lamkin. -Jake Lamkins (12/4/04) Went to visit Pete Lamkin in hospital, just had knee surgery, he's doing great and coming home today. What a trooper. -Bonnie Dahl (2/15/07) P H LAMKIN Pilot seniority date of 3/6/56, #7, on the 9/1/86 FL/ALPA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (11/3/08) Peter Hughes Lamkin 74 Aurora, CO Denver, CO Pete H Lamkin Keslie Lynn Lamkin Leslie Lamkin Janet N Lamkin Ami N Lamkin K Lamkin -Intelius.com (11/17/08) I just hung up from a nice visit with Pete. He's doin' GREAT! -Billy Walker (11/17/08) (Posted at Paul Haynie's guestbook.) Paul was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was, without question, one of the best. My heart goes out to Lisa and his family. -Pete Lamkin (7/1/09) I went to visit Pete Lamkin today, the 1st of February, 2011, he had major heart surgery on Jan 27th. He had a triple bypass. He's doing great, sitting up in a chair, walking a little, He's off oxygen, and other IV's, just having to use small breathing device during the commercials on TV to keep lungs clear. He should be going home in 2 or 3 days. It's remarkable, he's tired but was happy to see me. Has a pretty big incision on chest and a big heart pillow to hang onto, because it hurts when he coughs. Still has his sense of humor and still making fun of Tom Smith. He's at Aurora Hospital on Potomac street South of Mississippi. -Bonnie Dahl (2/1/11) I went to see Pete Lamkin yesterday at the Medical Center of Aurora. Pete was in good spirits sitting up in a chair, very alert and we had fun talking. This is what Pete had done, he not only had a triple by pass, he also had two new valves installed in his heart and an aneurysm repaired. His white blood cells are are down, so he's now fighting an infection and is receiving iv's of antibiotics. He is still in the hospital, getting very good care and talks highly of his doctors. When he leaves the hospital he will go to a rehab center in Aurora. Pete knows everyone that has been to see him and he told me everyone's name that had sent him a card, so these cards and visits mean a lot to him. Tom Smith has been there everyday. His worst complaint is he can't sleep because of his arthritis pain. So please keep cards coming and stop by if possible. He said he likes phone calls. He has been in the hospital since the 27th of January. -Bonnie Dahl (2/8/11) Good news on Pete, His daughter Kelsey called me last night, Pete being released from hospital, headed for 2 weeks at beautiful Rehab Center, Advanced Health Care of Aurora, 1800 South Potomac Street.. He would be there today but no room till tomorrow. I went by and visited with Pete, he's up and walking, no walker, no cane, nothing, we did 3 laps around hospital wing, I could barely keep up with him. He's doing really great! Only thing hurting is his back from arthritis. Pain meds help that. Told me a lot of flying stories today. Rehab Center is same place Jim Hanson went for recovery after hip surgery, place so nice Jim didn't want to leave. We can go over and have dinner with Pete for $5, Pete said he would buy. He's real close to all of us here in Aurora. Pete had triple by pass, two valves replaced, and repair down on his aorta. He was in surgery about 7 hours. 27th of january. Pete's a survivor and your prayers helped too! -Bonnie Dahl (2/13/11) Card to Pete: Hi Pete, Glad to hear you are fighting your way out of there. Hang tough and get home soon. Often asked over the years if we were kin:) Best regards, -Jake Lamkins (2/16/11) Hi Jake, Thanks very much for your card. It was certainly thoughtful og you. The heart problem was a complete surprise, but all is good now. I'm often asked if we are related also. Who knows? Maybe we are! All my best, -Pete Lamkin (3/24/11) Cheryl and I stopped by to have breakfast with Pete Lamkin. Pete is one of the most extraordinary fellows I've ever known and one of the first Frontier pilots I met. We figured that we had met fifty years and twenty one days ago yesterday! Pete is a lesson in determination, perseverance, humility and, of course, that ol' eight letter word "attitude!" Pete just does not have a negative thought. He is someone who would have every right to complain about the tough hand he was dealt. Not Pete! He is grateful of every minute and, especially, every flight... Photo from y'sterday. -Billy Walker (7/27/17) Pete Lamkin called me last evening. As always, it was a very nice visit catching up some since our visit in Colorado a few months ago. Pete asked me to request you stop sending him the newsletter. He doesn't want you to waste the postage. Sadly, Pete's eyesight has deteriorated to the point he is unable to see anything other than shapes. When he goes to the store he takes a list to give a store worker to fill for him. Yet, as bad as his eyesight is, his marvelous attitude remains perennial. While Pete acknowledges his infirmities he doesn't dwell upon them. Rather, he extols the people around him especially his two amazing grandsons. One is working on his professional flying skills, the other graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in Astro Physics and Engineering. Pete started one grandson flying a few years ago when he had a pristine little Cessna 140. Those of us who had the great pleasure of being around Pete, when he flew for good ol' Frontier, remember him as extraordinary. He was one of the best ever both mechanically flying the airplane and teaching others his craft. He did everything with grace. He still does. My pal, Jimmy Dean Appleby, likes to tell the story of when Pete was still in prime athletic shape. Pete was known for his strength and athleticism, a skier of renown. Pete had Appleby lay on the floor with his legs tightly together. Now Jimmy Dean Appleby isn't a small fellow, but Pete reached down and grabbed Appleby then proceeded to lift him over his head. That is no longer a possibility due to the ravages of arthritis. We all marveled at Pete's overcoming the pain and debilitation of severe arthritis. Gold shots, silicone implants in all his joints, what ever it took to keep flying. Pete endured. No one carried Pete’s flight back or suitcase. Pete, head held high, ambled out to his ship in a most determined way. Always. I reckon the message for the FLamily is to not bother writing Pete, but he'd love a call. Even better, a visit! Cheryl and I make it a point to call Pete to set up a day/time we can pick him up for a brunch or lunch near his apartment in Longmont. Cheryl and I are looking forward to our next trip to visit Pete after, of course, the snow melts and the May Flies hatch near my favorite trout streams. -Billy Walker (2/26/19) Sorry to hear Pete's having problems. I'll take him off the mailing list. May I share the story? Bad stretch of road here. We've lost three FSM agents in the last two weeks. One, my good friend Phil "Pigpen" Green," lost his nose to cancer which ate out his sinus cavities before spreading enough to kill him. He was a great friend who helped me with the FYV-FSM PIGnic for 50 years. You met him in 2017 which was the last time I saw him. He was already fighting the cancer then. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Phil_Green.html Another, Rod Downey, died in his sleep of a heart attack. Now, that's the way I want to go. Take care, keep fighting and thank you for your years of friendship. Jake Lamkins (2/27/19) P LAMKIN DEN res capt DOB 12/18/33 DOH 3/6/56 Per the Feb 1960 Frontier Employees Roster. Vern Lahman RIP Captain Lamkin. Billy Walker Humanity lost one of it's very best last night Jake. I've never known a better everything than Pete. Lots of folks will describe Pete as a 'Class Act,' but he was much more and in spades! Cheryl is looking for a recent photo of Pete with Cheryl and me outside his residence in Longmont. Every year except this last year we would pick up Pete for a little outing and have brunch and a nice visit. If we find it, we will send it to you. We just moved and are in a state of flux! Everyone who had the honor of knowing Pete will mourn his passing. If anyone ever deserved a smooth westerly flight, it is Captain Pete Lamkin. I know he had smooth air, warm-soft tailwinds, and a bright start to steer by. P. S. I found some photos of Pete on my website. The one with Pete, Cheryl and me was taken in front of his residence in Longmont. What a fellow he was. Pete was such a great teacher. Just his way of dealing with life showed character of mega proportions. Most would shake their heads and marvel seeing him trudge to the airplane with a flight bag in one hand and an overnight bag in the other. A lesser person suffering with raging arthritis would pray for a wheel chair. Not Pete. Often someone would ask to carry his bags. Pete would softly decline. To say the Frontier folks revered Pete would be a gross understatement. Dave Kaplan Oh My, what sad news...Pete was the ultimate 'Class Act'...Always the Gentleman, Captain and Excellent Pilot... He went through his life in pain, and never complained about his arthritis and difficulties... May The Lord Rest His Soul. Ryan Maury So sad to loose one of the best, RIP Pete. (2/14/21) Jake Lamkins His obituary errs in naming Pete the youngest pilot hired at Frontier.
