I just heard from Joe Able that Paul Haynie was lost in a plane crash this morning in Cottonwood , AZ. Article at http://verdenews.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&subsectionID=1&articleID=31460 I spoke with Paul at one of our QB gatherings a while back. He had been flying a Cessna Citation some as well as working on his RV experimental aircraft. Apparently, he was riding with another pilot when the mishap occurred. -Billy Walker (6/23/09) With great sadness I learned yesterday that Capt. Paul Haynie was killed in a home built plane while giving instruction near his home in Cottonwood, AZ. No further information is available at this time. Paul just turned 73 ten days ago. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, his mother, his two sons and their families and his mother-in-law and father-in-law. -John Winter (6/24/09) •Two Cottonwood men killed in plane crash Tuesday, June 23, 2009 COTTONWOOD -- A single-engine plane crashed into undeveloped scrub northeast of the flight path of the Cottonwood Airport Tuesday. Two men from Cottonwood aboard the plane were killed. The pilot was identified as Phillip H. Rajca, 64, of Cottonwood. The passenger was 73-year-old Paul C. Haney of Cottonwood. Witnesses reported that the plane was flying erratically before it went down, according to Cottonwood sergeant and police spokesman Gary Eisenga, who made a wave-like motion with his hand. Cottonwood Fire Chief Mike Casson said there was not much left of the cockpit after the 8:30 a.m. crash. The plane went down nose-first at a sharp angle, he believed. Police draped the plane in cloth apparently to screen its identity until next of kin are notified. Two diameters of police tape kept all but police, fire and other city officials at a distance. Police vehicles lined SR 89A south of the crash site, and fire units filled the end of Ocotillo Street in Verde Heights. The FAA and NTSB were called to investigate the scene. -http://verdenews.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&subsectionID=1&articleID=31460 (6/24/09) So very sad to read of Paul's death. He was among the finest, truest gentlemen I ever met, in or out of an airplane cockpit. -Ed Teel (6/24/09) Withheld until known for sure...It is now official...via Radio Station KVOA... It is OK to use any of these in Pauls OBIT page or the newsletters. There was a huge turn-out for Paul’s services. Earlier yesterday morning, all of the airport “bums” met at the Cottonwood hangar to kibitz about Paul. He hadn’t lived there all that long, but it was readily apparent he left and indelible footprint in the sands of Arizona . We didn’t have many FAL folks there likely due to the out-of-the-way location. Unless you have a private aircraft such as Appleby’s 320 Skynight, folks would have to fly into PHX then rent a car to drive there. It is a 2 hour drive at that. John Winter drove his motor home up from Texas after hearing of Paul’s death. Bill McCaffrey and his wife were there, Jim & Carolyn Appleby along with Cheryl and I represented good ol’ Frontier. Of course, Paul’s wife, Lisa, is a former FAL stewardess. Here is another, more recent, photo of Paul I may have neglected to send: -Billy Walker (6/28/09) Paul was one of those rare individuals who made a positive impact on the lives he touched in so many different areas. Certainly, those of us at good ol' Frontier who had the pleasure of working/flying with Paul knew he was something special in his professional abilities and personal character. He was so diverse in his ianterests that it is easier to speak of things he didn't do rather that all he accomplished. Family man, aviator (in a world full of pilots), artist, cartoonist, trombone player, sailor, runner, bicyclist, swimmer, scuba diver, mountain climber, and more. Much more. Paul will be missed. -Billy Walker (6/28/09) Here is what was handed out at Paul’s services. It still seems impossible! -Billy Walker (He sent Paul's burial note.) (7/1/09) Yesterday at the Cottonwood AZ airport there was a missing man flyover tribute to Paul Haynie. It wasnt well publicized or I feel that some FL people from Phoenix would have driven up for it. As it was I only saw it in the friday paper. It was a glorious day - being 4 Wright-Steerman bi-planes-- coming in from the south and one peeling off right overhead for the missing man formation all blowing smoke trails out. It was beautiful and touching. -Linda Hamala (10/18/09)
