MARK TASLER 1973 - 1986 STATION AGENT LNK DEN Jake, I just got this on the news. One of ours gone west. Quite a shock to us in Lincoln. -Cork Guenther (4/7/10) -------------------------------------------------- Local priest killed in accident By Melanie Wilkinson YORK Father Mark Tasler, the pastor at St. Josephs' Catholic Church in York, was killed in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday evening, April 6. According to Deb Collins, spokesperson for the Nebraska State Patrol, a trooper came upon the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m., at milemarker 382, on Interstate 80, near the Milford interchange. Collins said the westbound 2004 Honda Accord had left the righthand side of the roadway and struck two pine trees. She said Father Tasler, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper said seatbelts were in use. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Father Tasler has been the pastor at the York parish since June 14, 2006. He was in Nebraska City for 10 years, prior to moving to York, where he was pastor of St. Benedict Church and the high school principal of Lourdes Central Catholic. A native of Lohrville, Iowa, he went to work for Frontier Airline in Denver, Colo., following high school. He spent 11 years with the company, as a ticket agent and in operations. He told Marcia Schlegelmilch in an earlier interview for the York News-Times that he was able to do a lot of traveling, but he couldnt help thinking there was more to life. The good Lord was working on me, he said. Then I realized I could go anywhere, the world was small. There must be more to this life. A lot of the things that I do now have ramifications that go beyond this life and that is very fulfilling. To help other people put that in perspective. Father Tasler received his degree in general studies and humanities at Mt. St. Marys in Emmitsburg, Md. He also held master degrees in theology and divinity. Father Tasler said his decision to become a priest came later in life for him than most, as he was ordained in 1990. Really, this life is a counter culture to some degree, he said in the earlier interview. It makes a lot more sense since I have experienced some things in life. From 1990-96, he served three parishes in Lincoln as assistant priest, served a parish in Bellwood and a rural congregation near David City. During those six years, he continued his education at the University of Nebraska, obtaining a degree in education administration in 1997. I want to be an instrument to help people grow closer to God, Father Tasler said in the 2006 interview. An instrument to bring Gods love to others and help us all become instruments of Gods love, serving the community and the parish as a family. -York, Nebraska News-Times on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 M A TASLER Station agent seniority date of 2/24/73, emp# 11365, on the 1/1/86 FL/ALEA seniority list. Father Mark Tasler, pastor at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, died Tuesday in a one person car accident. Parishioners remember a man who dedicated his life to serving the community. The Nebraska state patrol said they found Father Tasler in his car Tuesday night on the side of Interstate 80. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the cause of his death is still under investigation. But for the lives he touched as a pastor in York his death is an unexpected and great loss. He was a spiritual leader, mentor, and friend. "He was a humorous, loving man," said St. Joseph's Principal Tawn Lewis. Only 55 years old, Father Tasler joined the ministry later in his life after spending years working for Frontier Airlines. "He worked in the airlines and after he had been around the world he wanted to teach people about the world beyond this earth," said Father Rempe. He was the spiritual leader of 500 families that frequented his parish in York. He always pointed the way toward Christ. Father Tasler also had a passion for education and the community felt it. "I do not think there was anything he thought was more important than Saint Joseph's Grade School here in York," said Father Rempe. "He is out front saying goodbye to the kids and welcoming them every morning. He says mass every morning and when he did not come today it was really sad," parishioner Sarah Erwin said. "He was always thinking about what was best for the school and what was best for the parish and would do anything to keep the school open," said Lewis. And while he is not here to lead his students and congregation on personally parishioners said he is still with them. "He will be greatly, greatly missed. His love and his spirit are here with us though," said Lewis. Because of the number of people that are expected to attend Father Tasler's funeral services will be held Saturday morning at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. -By Amy West - KHASTV.com (4/7/10) OBITUARY Father Mark Tasler, 55, of York, Nebraska, died Tuesday (4/06/10). Really nice that he went into the ministry after FAL. Always a gentleman and pretty cool under pressure, too. I'm sure he was as good at being a priest as he was a FAL agent. Father Mark, pray for us. -Chuck Tisckos (4/10/10) Just returned from Hawaii yesterday. I go over in July and house-sit for Judi Fenton-Plumer each year while they come to the mainland to see their parents (Mothers). I spent 3 weeks over there. Judi gave me her copy of your newsletter to read on the airplane. I really enjoyed it. The article on Mark Tasler was great. He was one of my best friends at Frontier. He took my place in LNK when I transferred to LBF. -Connie McAlister (8/4/10)
