JOE ROORDA 1961 - 1985 PILOT SLC DEN A high school friend of his called me today. Joe has flown west some time in early Jan. -Otto Smith (1/8/22) I flew copilot with Joe Roorda often. His wife was Nely. We were SLC based & both single at the time. We got a wild hair and stopped in a second-hand store. Joe bought a banjo I bought a Yamaha guitar. We envisioned ourselves a future acclaimed duet! They became dust collectors. Ah, young men & their dreams! I had a nifty '67 suicide-doors Ford T-Bird. Joe bought it from me when Cheryl and I took LOAs from FAL and went to Cambodia in 1971-72. I experienced two near mid-air crashes in the 580 ! One was with Joe going into Manhattan KS. A Cessna 182 departed downwind and no radio use! When we were on final a couple of miles out we saw each other at the same time. I will NEVER forget the Cessna wings bending and missing us by inches. Joe landed taxied-in & parked. We just sat in silence looking at each other until the agent handed us our papers. A deep breath later and we were back to business as usual. Joe flew P2V Neptune's in the Navy. RIP Joe -Billy Walker (1/8/22) Thanks for letting me know. Ruth Pitts He was great guy fun to fly with him blessings to his family. (1/19/22) Billy Walker Joe was a great guy, good friend, and colleague. We shared the cockpit numerous times. We traded cars too and decided simultaneously to play instruments. In a SLC pawnshop Joe bought a banjo & I bought a guitar! It was a disaster and we remained musicians of no renown! Every time I see a former Lockheed PV-2 "Neptune" I think of Joe and his stories of his Navy flying. RIP Joe, you were such a good fellow. Keep the runway clear, I'll catch up one day. (7/8/23)
