JIM MUSTAIN 1959 - 1986 STATION AGENT, ASSISTANT STATION MANAGER, STATION MANAGER, MANAGER-FLIGHT PROVISIONING TBN STL MEM FOE DEN TUS Hi Jake Just visited the FAL website and see that you are still doing a teriffic job of keeping it updated and interesting new info. When is the next reunion and where??? I have not been in contact with many ex-FAL personnel but would love to visit those of us who are left. Just an update on myself - I left TUS in late '86 to join TranStar Airlines as Mgr. @ LAX. After TranStar's demise, I worked for CO (Sue Wilson) in Dining Service @ GO in HOU and then opened Flt. Kitchen for CO @ LAX in 1988. Hired by SWA as Mgr. @ LAX, then to RenoAir @ LAX and later Director of Customer Service (Stations) when AA bought us out. Really didn't want to work for AA so I retired to open an aviation/airline giftshop in El Segundo, CA near LAX for 5 yrs 2000-2005. In Aug. 2000 recruited by IBC Aviation Services to manage their cargo handling division @ LAX handling Alaska Air Cargo, Midwest Express, Midway, (new) Frontier, Horizon. Retired in April- 2005. Wife & I have home in Yucca Valley, CA where we spend our winters and also a home on Tablerock Lake @ Cape Fair, MO where we spend summers - May to mid October. So far my health is good. How's things with you??? Hope you are healthy and stay that away !!! -Jim Mustain (5/23/09 Hello Jim, Really great to hear from you and know you're enjoying retirement and in good health. I retired from the FYV post office in 2003 and am having a great time. I do a lot of volunteer work which I really enjoy. And the FL stuff keeps me busy. I'll send you an invite to the nearly 700 member online FL Club. There's also a FL newsletter - send your postal address and I'll send you one. Can it really be 40 years ago we worked together in STL?! You were the TUS manager when we shut down, right? Did you go in there when RJ Burt retired? He passed away recently. -Jake Lamkins (5/24/09) Jimmie L. Mustain Station agent seniority date of 7/8/59, TBN, on the 1/1/62 CN Agent Seniority List. Jim Mustain, MEM station manager, per Nov 1977 & Nov 1978 FL Quick Reference Directories. A Mar 1979 article shows him FOE station manager Jim Mustain, DEN manager-aircraft provisioning, per Dec 1980, Jan 1982 & Jan 1983 FL telephone directories. -Jake Lamkins (5/24/09) I saw on the website that R.J. had passed away. Yes, I replaced him when he retired from TUS. Got to know him while he was a Director and he was very cordiual & helpful in the transition. He was quite an individual and once you got to know him, he was great. By the way, have you heard anything about Truman Jeter? Last contact I had with him was in the late 90's After you sent out the announcement that I had join the group, I got an e-mail from Gary Mackie within minutes - Great to hear from him. -Jim Mustain (5/24/09) Last I heard on Truman was last November. His ex-wife Karyn said he was retired from UA and living at ALM. Attached is a photo of yall from the good ol' days. -Jake Lamkins (5/25/09) Happened to look at a Calender today and noticed the date: 07-08-09 - (odd how the numbers fall) and realized that 50 years ago today, I entered the airline industry. Started work for Central Airlines in St. Louis Lambert Field as Passenger Service Agent. A PSA did everything, i.e., Sold tickets, ramp agent including freight/air express/mail pickup, bag pickup, cleaning A/C, dumping "honey bucket", drain fuel sumps, clean windshield, deice in winter, commissary-hot/cold water-gum-cigerettes-matches-instant coffee/hot choclate/lemonade and later sodas. Between flights we handled our own reservations before we centralized to GSW. We had 2 DC-3 flights a day, Flt. 71 & 75 - STL-HRO-FYV-FSM-MLC-DAL-GSW. The first week or so, TWA substitued a B-707 on a Super Connie flight from LAX to STL. We had a 93 yr. old connecting passenger going to HRO - She was a very thrilled lady!!!! Ed Ciscowski was Station Mgr. & some of the agents were - Larry Thomas - Paul Stitle - Elton Hart - Joan Boston (her father was on CN board of directors). Can't remember any others. I was hired to replace Ed Dunaway who had transfered to HOT, I believe. I transferred to TBN when CN opened the airport there in '61. Ed Dunaway came to TBN at that time. Ed helped me tremendously while there and taught me a lot about manuals/tariffs/international tariffs etc. I went back to STL in '62, stayed thru merger with Frontier and received my first Station Mgr position in MEM in late 1970. Believe Capt. on first flight I worked was Johnny Wright - great person. He welcomed me to CN, (this lowly new hire PSA !!) I was impressed. I retired after 45 yrs and enjoyed the journey, & met/worked with the greatest people along the way !!!!! Wouldn't take anything for the memories. -Jim Mustain (7/8/09) Hi Jim, Thanks for the remembrance. It will be 45 years ago for me in August. Try to come down for the FYV-FSM FL Reunion Aug 15. -Jake Lamkins (7/9/09) Congratulations Jim! You were a great person to work for and I feel privileged to have known you. Although our time together was short your influence was great. Take care my friend and a belated welcome to the FL Club also!! -Tom Schmidt (7/9/09) Do you have Larry Thomas' e-mail?? Larry & I started within a couple of months of each other in STL in '59. Would like to make contact with him. -Jim Mustain (8/24/10) I'm back at our home in CA and was going thru some boxes of "Airline Stuff'". I have numerous issues of FL employee newspapers. I am attaching a list of one's found and want to know if you would like/need any of them. If so, let me know and I will send to you. I also have numerous items of FL give aways, note pads, RON Kits, etc. Do you have a place for them or would you want pictures for publication on Facebook, etc.? Even found several issues of "WHY" magazine !!!! Several industry magazines with articles about FL. I have old issue of CN Skywriter that I have not found yet. Let me know of you interest in any of these items. -Jim Mustain (11/6/10) Hi Jim, I would be glad to have anything you want to send. The newsletters sound great as do the other items. I use a lot of stuff at the CN/FL Exhibit I have at the Air Museum here: http://FYV.tripod.com Thanks, -Jake Lamkins (11/7/10) Sorry, I haven't sent items I told you about. Have been trying to locate another box or 2 of CN/FL items that are packed away in attic of garage. I will send what I have out this week along with several pictures of models in my collection. I really don't want anything for the items I have. Just glad to share. -Jim Mustain (1/10/11) Hi Jim, What a delightful package you sent. I was so immersed in it; three hours came and went in a flash. And I'm not even finished yet. Love the newsletters...and the rest too. (24 FL and 1 CN newletters) Thank you so much! -Jake Lamkins (1/19/11) Thanks for letting me know the package arrived. Hope you enjoy and can use some of the items to keep the memories alive & to share. I will keep looking for more items. (I know the're here somewhere!!) Here's our schedule for being at certain addresses for the newsletter: May 15 to Oct 20 - Cape Fair, MO 65624 and rest of time @ Yucca Valley, CA 92284 -Jim Mustain (1/19/11) Thanks again, Jim. Your first issue, Winter 2011, in the mail tomorrow. I added a bit to the subscription as a token of my appreciation. I still have fond memories of my 1968-70 sojourn in STL and working with you. Best regards, -Jake Lamkins (1/20/11) I, too, enjoyed our time together in STL, especially fond memories of working the "Nighthawks" to DEN & DAL and of Capt. Ev Aden leading the rampers with assistance loading mail in the 1st Class Section Seat Packs. He certainly empressed the troops - me, too!! We were a proud group. -Jim Mustain (1/20/11) I recall Ev snagging those TW passengers for DEN walking by our gate. TW left at 4:55pm and our 727-200 left at 5pm. Ev would promise to beat TW to DEN and would make inflight announcements when he passed them. That and his talk about lobster and steak and comp wine got us a lot of TW passengers. Another memory was the TW strike when I was at AF in 1970 and we were swamped. I still have the plaque and it's displayed in my hallway. Yep, I definitely remember those first class seat packs. What a bitch to load! And damned near every night we would have to pull some passenger off the beltloader at the front door who was too stupid to follow everybody else to the back stair. -Jake Lamkins (1/20/11) I just found another box of CN/FL items - a stack of CN Skywriters. Do you want more? plus several other items that I have duplicate of. Will get together and send by the 1st of next week. -Jim Mustain (1/27/11) Sounds great, Jim, especially the Skywriters. Thanks again, -Jake Lamkins (1/28/11) Another packet! Once again, I'm in your debt for making my day. Just finished going through the latest package you sent and it was all wonderful stuff - especially the CN Skywriters. Thanks again, -Jake Lamkins (2/22/11) I have a group picture of the TUS employees taken about 2 weeks after the close of station in "86. I can't remember if I sent you a copy with stuff I sent last winter. Might look & see. If not, I will send you a copy when I return to Calif. in November. A lot of the guys who have "flown West" are in the picture. -Jim Mustain (7/22/11) No, Jim, I didn't get it. It would be very helpful too. Seems a lot of TUS guys have gone west. -Jake Lamkins (7/22/11) FYV-FSM Reunion I always enjoy the time I get to spend with our FLamily. Revisiting and laughing about all the fun we had. Almost makes me feel guilty for taking the pay. Just kidding. Seeing Jim Mustain brought back great memories of MEM. Thanks all you do for the family, -Joe Keys (8/21/11) FLacebook: Had lunch w/Truman Jeter Thursday as passing ABQ. Great visit!! He is recovering well after his accident. -Jim Mustain (11/3/12) I got out of A/L school in Tulsa in Feb. '59. 17 yrs. old and too young to work for any airline. Went home for 5 months. Our local bank pres. was brother-in-law of Braniff Res Mgr.-STL. He made call to Cecil Trickey & arranged interview. By then, I had turned 18. Went to STL to interview but had to be 19 to work for BN. Cecil called other airlines at Lambert & found opening at CN. Went straight to airport, interviewed with Ed Ciskowski. 2 days later, he called and next day I was in STL working for CN. Larry Thomas had started a couple months before & befriended me & that friendship lasted until he left us. Have fond memories of the fun times we all had working together. -Jim Mustain (2/12/16) Well, now that Gussie has let the "CAT" out the bag I will explain. Last spring, I was diagnosed with bone cancer in the sternum & a spot on my lung. Bio of spot proved non cancerous. Several radiation treatments were applied to both areas with success. While in FL in Jan this year, severe pain appeared in hip & shoulder. Trips to ER helped some, returned home to family doctor & referrals, still no diagnosis. Follow up CAT scans for cancer doctor showed new spots. All result of bone cancer & treatable. Radiation was started immediately to reduce pain, once done will determine next plan of action. Most likely chemo. Thanks to all of you for your concern and prayers. I believe in the power of prayer and that God's got this!!!! -Jim Mustain (3/10/19) FLacebook Hi Jake, according to Jim Mustain's page, he FLew West either today or yesterday. -Gary Wingert (5/19/19) DAMN! Thanks for letting me know. -Jake Lamkins (5/19/19) Sure thing. He always made all of us feel special and showed love and care to all his employees equally. RIP Jim Mustain JIM. -Marie Franco (5/27/19) Celebrating and saying goodbye to the best man and grandpa today. It’s hard to comprehend that he’s gone with so much life left in his years, but cancer sucks will suck it all out of you, no matter the age. My first memory of Table Rock was my dad and I coming out here and meeting Papa and my great grandfather in a little house on the lake in Cape Fair. And I’m fairly certain that trip helped lead my dad to move the family out here from Denver. I was fortunate to get some years with him when I was young. And then extremely fortunate to get to be with him for many years as an adult. In our last conversation he told me that one of his proudest and fondest moments was being able to work many summers at The Ski Shack with my dad, brother, and I. Something I will always cherish, too. It all won’t be the same. But I’m happy he’s no longer suffering. -Zach Mustain (5/28/19) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Jim Mustain STL MEM FOE DEN TUS manager Jim Mustain's memorial webpage is posted at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Jim_Mustain.html I worked with and knew Jim since 1968 and last saw him at our reunion last year. Prayers for his family and friends. -Trish Swanson-Hawk (5/31/19) Jim is one individual I actually knew, never met him however being in reservations I had plenty of opportunity to interact. He was very customer oriented and went out of his way to assist. He also had a great sense of humor and I can honestly say that any day I had an opportunity to talk with Jim was a day he put a smile on my face. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. May the happy memories soon begin to overwhelm the sadness. -Sandra Crouthamel (5/31/19) What a great guy...always had the right answers, and was always available to help solve a problem!
