He is not doing very well, and is being fed by a tube in his stomach. He has lost his speech and use of his right side. His wife Mary, thinks that he will not be able to come home, with the possibility of going to an extended care Hospital. He did recognize me and Ken Griffith, which is better than I can do sometimes when I look in the mirror. If you wish to send him a card, address it to his home: 2105 Rosslyn ChapelArlington, Texas 76012 -Weldon Finney (10/20/08) James Richard Liddle 85 Arlington, TX Dallas, TX David J Liddle Mary T Liddle Jas R Liddle -Intelius.com (10/21/08) I talked to Jim Liddle's wife, Mary. Jim's condition has not changed very much, except that the paralysis on his right side is a little better and he can use his right arm better, but does not have full use of it. He recognizes his family, but does not seem to recognize anyone else yet. The expressions in his face is more pronounced and seems to be getting some part his facial expressions back. He still is unable to speak, but spends a little time in a wheelchair each day. Mary ask that I relay her thanks to all his friends for their concern and thoughts of Jim, and apologies for not being able to call each one. I will try to keep you updated on his condition. -Weldon Finney (11/4/08) Jim is in a skilled nursing facility named " Renaissance Park" on the West Side of Fort Worth. His wife Mary tells me that he still cannot talk and is extremely hyper; and is regaining some use of his right arm to the point that he tries to remove the tubes they have inserted in him and they have tied his arms to prevent him from removing the tubes. She is moving into the facility to stay with Jim except for a short trips home each day and ask that if you would like to call her or send cards to Jim, please direct them to her home address and phone. She will read each card to him and give him any message. If she is not at home, please leave a message and she will forward it to him. -Weldon Finney (11/7/08) Just talked with Jim Liddle's wife, Mary. Jim is making a few very small improvements. He is beginning to be able to swallow a little with very small bites of food given to him by a therapist. However, he is still being fed by a tube inserted into his stomach. He is being moved from his bed to a recliner type chair for short periods of time but is still unable to talk. Mary says that he seems to really enjoy the emails and cards being sent to him and she reads each one to him. She thinks he recognizes each person sending them and extends her thanks to all, and hope they continue. He will probably be moved to an extended care facility soon. -Weldon Finney (11/13/08) There are so many who have called or sent cards, that I want to thank. Today was a good day---Jim had the therapy sessions, and did well. For those who don't know, Jim lost speech, swallowing, and some strength in the right side. The speech is not back, but Jim has a delightful speech therapist, a gal who is about 25, and very pretty. I didn't know that the swallowing was such a big deal, but without it, you can't eat, so you have a stomach tube, and a bag of nasty looking stuff that goes into a tube into your stomach. That was a process very similar to an endoscopy, and comes out with a little plastic tube, which is connected to a bag of yuck, that has all the nutrients and calories that a person needs. Jim has gone for 6 weeks without eating---can you imagine? It even surprised him, when I told him the other day. When I tell him about the ones who have called, sent cards, or are very concerned about him, he smiles his one sided smile. Just a note for those who don't follow symptoms of a stroke, one side of the face doesn't lift right away. I had just come home from my volunteering at the hospital, had some soup for lunch for us, and as we sat down in our chairs, he made some strange noise, and I looked at him and knew in an instant that it was a stroke. I called 911, and they were here in minutes. The neurologist told me that there is not, one stroke, a second stroke, it is a continuous stroke. Jim's wasn't too bad at first, but in ICU, he had more that took so much from him. It's been six weeks since the first sign, and we have had good and bad days. He was in Arlington Memorial Hospital for 3 weeks, and now has been in a skilled nursing facility in FTW for 3 weeks. Our goal is to bring him home as soon as he can be off the feeding tube, and is able to get from a chair to the bed. I will get a hospital bed, and have home health care, and do the best I can. My sister, Betty, did all this for her husband for years. He died last Dec., but she showed me how to do this. Thanks to all of you, and if I haven't responded, I will try to get to it soon. My memories of Central Airlines keep me aware of the love and concern that I know now. Jim and I have wonderful sons and a daughter that are my strength--they keep me going. Maybe soon, I will write about how great it is to have Jim home. Love to all, -Mary Liddle There has been so much improvement in the last two days----it really is exciting. The catheter was removed this morning, and he has to be able to pee a certain amount in 8 hrs, or they will put another one in. Keep your fingers crossed that he can. He has said a few words----when I was trying to put some moisturizer on his lips, he said " Wait a minute". That's a lot to get excited about. He's gaining strength on both sides, and helps so much in getting dressed. There hasn't been a lot of progress in the swallowing, but the thrush is better and the therapist has been out of town. She's working with him today. I really think he can do the swallowing---just hasn't wanted to eat anything because it all tastes so bad---because of the thrush. Or at least, that's my thinking. Thanks so much for the cards, notes, and Roger Shrinkle, thanks for that wonderful article about the history of Frontier Airlines, a lot of memories for so many. I'm not going to set any time that I can bring him home, but it's definitely closer. It's been two months since the stroke. Love to all, -Mary Liddle (12/5/08) Jim is still improving, but has a little setback. He has a bladder/urinary tract infection. They haven't received the report yet from the lab, but I know that's what it is. I've had that myself, and it's painful---also ran a fever yesterday. But, I'm sure we'll come through this too. Must say that it is so great to hear from some of you---cards and messages on the phone. Sam Clark---so good to hear your voice, and Hugh, so lovely to know you care enough to call. That includes you too, Weldon, and you, Wes. John Toman was in the area for Thanksgiving, and he and Bert came over to FTW for a visit. Loved having them---John is about the same, only a little less frisky. Bert has helped us so much--brings food to me, and stayed with Jim last Friday so that I could go to a lunch with a bunch of my friends. May everyone have a Merry Christmas Love, -Mary Liddle (12/7/08) Jim was moved to hospice care late yesterday. Things started going downhill on Monday, and I finally agreed that he needed the kind of care a hospice place gives.. They are keeping him free of pain, and making him calm, which is such a blessing for me, because his anxiety was terrible at times. All the kids are here, and we will just be with him for as long as he lives. I didn't want to prolong this, so he's no longer on the feeding tube, which we have both hated from the beginning. But, it did give us time to try therapy. He's in Universal Hospice Health Care on Bridge St. in east Ft. Worth. It is so wonderful---will tell more later---just came home for clean clothes. We love all of you, and thank you again for all the lovely concerns you've shown us. Love, -Mary Liddle (12/18/08) I'm sorry to report the passing of Jim Liddle. All our family felt that love too. Jim and I did all that we could to have him come out of that stroke with some quality of life. He never regained his speech, or managed to swallow enough to take him off the feeding tube. I have peace that we tried, and we finally wound up in an incredible hospice facility in east Ft Worth. They kept him free of pain and agitation, and helped him die with some dignity. I was with him when he died, and I will be forever grateful for that. Jim's daughter, Sandy, arranged for the Veterans Honor Guard at the cemetery. A bugler played Taps, and the flag was folded and given to me. His son, Mike, had written a beautiful piece titled Perfect Flight. Our boys, David and Rick, kept me in one piece, and will keep me going. I send love to all you wonderful friends from the years with Central and Frontier Airlines. -Mary Liddle (12/28/08) Dear Mary, Thank you for the lovely email that Weldon sent to the CN/FL family. I am posting it at Jim's memorial webpage at the Frontier website (FAL-1.tripod.com/Jim_Liddle.html). And I would like to include the Perfect Flight piece composed by Mike. Would you mind emailing it to me? I'm also putting an article about Jim in the next issue of the Frontier newsletter. My sincere condolences in this hard time. -Jake Lamkins, CN/FL station agent, 1964-86 (12/29/08) Posted at the FL Club New memorial webpage JIM LIDDLE 1949 - 1983 PILOT FTW GSW DAL DFW http://FAL-1. tripod.com/ Jim_Liddle. html -Jake Lamkins (12/29/08) How wonderful that you care this much. The Perfect Flight is quite long, and I don't think I can email it, possibly could fax it, although we don't have a fax machine. Could I mail it to you---by sending a copy of the bulletin that they had at the visitation? -Mary Liddle (12/29/08) Thank you, Mary. You can mail it to me along with anything else you would like on his memorial webpage. -Jake Lamkins (12/29/08) Note with Jim's burial note: Jake, Thank you for your interest in this. Jim would have been so proud of this writing. -Mary Liddle (1/2/09) Hi Mary, I posted Jim's burial note at his memorial website: http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Jim_Liddle.html Thank you for sending it. -Jake Lamkins (1/3/09) Posted at the FL Club More on Jim Liddle Mary Liddle sent Jim's burial note which is now posted on his webpage at http://FAL-1. tripod.com/ Jim_Liddle. html -Jake Lamkins (1/3/09) I'm overwhelmed! I didn't realize you are such a historian. I can't say thank you enough for this beautiful tribute to Jim. All the friends at Central and Frontier meant a great deal to him over the years. I will forward this to all our family----his kids will be thrilled. This is very precious to me. With love, -Mary Liddle (1/3/09) Thank you so much for Dad's tribute....Yes I am Jim's only daughter, his Punkin,,,,although I am now 60 myself. It is so wonderful to read all of the history of Central, see old photos of him instructing....and of course, most importantly, read all of the lovely condolence notes from many parts of the country from pilots that flew with Dad. He was a pilot's pilot....and one of "the best pilots" as many have said. He was my hero, he will always be my hero and will be my daughter Samantha's hero. She is now 25, was Dad's 1st grandchild. She was lucky to have had him all of these years. She only had her Dad, 16 yrs, as he died 8 yrs ago. So Dad played an important role in Sam's life, in her Dad's absence. I cannot thank you enough for all of the time you spent putting this together for Dad. I am very touched. I am forwarding this to my Daughter and am printing out the contents to keep for her children. Dad loved flying...and certainly loved flying and working with all of you!!!!! Warmest regards, -Sandy Ceppos: Jim Liddle's proud daughter (1/5/09) It's a real pleasure to be of service. All my work with the Central/Frontier family centers on keeping the remaining members in touch and preserving the memories that were made over the years. That includes the website, the newsletter and the online club. Email anything you would like added to Jim's memorial webpage. Best regards, -Jake Lamkins, station agent 1964-86 (1/5/09)
