She also sent some paper clippings about a 1958 incident in Pueblo where her dad flew a DC3 that lost an engine and he landed the aircraft in a field - all survived. I will send it to you. -Carolyn Boller (7/11/21) Thanks, Carolyn. This must be the most flights west we've ever gotten from the reunion mailing. -Jake Lamkins (7/11/21) Ms Boller, Thank you for sending my dad, James R Langhofer, an invitation, however he will not be attending. Dad passed away May 7, 2020 at the age of 94. He was one of the pilots with the original Frontier and started flying for them in 1950. In 1958, flying out of Pueblo the DC3 lost an engine and they were unable to return to the airport. Dad flew the plane just under some high tension wires and put it in a field - all passengers and crew were safe. Dad kept the prop that came into the cockpit and almost sliced his seat. I’ve included a copy of news clippings from the crash. He loved his time with Frontier and really missed it when he retired in 1984. Prior to joining Frontier, he was a Navy pilot who participated in the Berlin Airlift and flew 141 missions (no aborts). He received the Air Medal for his participation. You can tell I'm quite proud of my dad. -Nancy Langhofer Ruckman (7/11/21) Found on google search: Nancy Ruckman at Berlin Airlift Facebook page on May 17, 2020 https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10217374564651686&set=gm.10157539581202481 It is with a sad heart that I notify the Berlin Airlift group of my father's passing. He flew nearly 34 years for Frontier and averted a tragedy in a crash landing at PUB in Aug 1958. -Jake Lamkins (7/20/21) Nancy Langhofer Ruckman Thank you for the memorial. I didn't expect this much when I responded to the picnic invitation. This is so much more than he received when he retired in 1984. Very few employees had been informed of his retirement so there weren't very many who greeted him at either end of the flight. This memorial is appreciated. Thanks. 1984 - 1986 were bad years for Frontier. The turmoil, especially in management, caused a lot of people to not be treated as well as they had in the past. I'm glad this memorial webpage helps. I want to thank this group for the wonderful memorial for my dad, Jim Langhofer. He loved his Frontier family and could still tell stories from his flying days. His memories of the past were still very clear. Here are a few pictures I have scanned since his passing last year. I contacted Wings over the Rockies who were extremely happy to take his last Frontier uniform and hat for their Frontier display. Trish Swanson-Hawk Thank you for sharing.
