IKE ISAACS 1950 - 1984 PILOT SLC DEN Enclosed is my subcription fee for the Frontier News. I was a pilot for Frontier from August 1950 till January 1984. Thank you, -Seymour W. Isaacs (6/25/05) This story is a true personal experience. Altho not a Frontier happening it happened to me, a Frontier pilot for 34 years. It has been printed with many other stories in the "Legacy Of Daedalus" - a "coffee table" kind of book. If you elect to print this in the Frontier News, I would be pleased (See story titled MolokaiStory-Isaacs in Winter 2006 FL NEWS and in Isaacs file) -Seymour Isaacs (22/21/05) SW Isaacs Date of employment 8/11/50 FL/ALPA seniority list dated 9/1/55 -Jake Lamkins (12/31/05) FL NEWS Jul 2011 Some of those attending the SLC Reunion were pilots Tex Searle, Dave Rampton, John Iverson, Jack Schade, Ike Isaacs, Dave Wabel, Al Harris, Gary Winn, Joe Ferguson, Jack Robins, Bob Bagshaw and Al Kendell. Flight attendants Gail Fischel and Mary Weil. Station folks Mary Lynn Doyle, Carol Knudsen, Marlene Jensen, Wayne Hays, Kerry Stephens, Lee Johnson, Walt Ness, Duane Phelps, Bob Noble, Paul Farris, Ron Hill, Ron Blosch, Stan Covington, Marty Hernandez, Ron Hill, Jim Langford, Don Anderton, and Don Halterman. -Stan Covington, Salt Lake City UT (7/25/11) Claudia Issacs called tonight. We talked about Ike for over an hour. It was not good... Recently, Claudia fell and broke her hip. She was in a rehab facility in the Phoenix area. Ike was in to see her daily. Friday, he told her he had some errands to run and he'd see her later. But, he didn't show up all. As you might imagine, she became worried. Finally, her concerns growing, she made an unauthorized departure from re-hab; she hired a taxi, and headed for home. With the taxi-driver's help she made it to the house where they discovered Ike unconscious. Apparently, he'd fallen with his leg and foot stuck awkwardly putting him in a bad position on the floor. It was readily apparent he could not move. A call to 911 brought the EMT folks who whisked Ike to John C. Lincoln Hospital. His injuries necessitated surgeries which caused a migrating infection to attack Ike. Despite the use of antibiotics, Ike is not expected to survive. The plan is to move him to Hospice. Shocking news about someone who heretofore belied his age. Cheryl and I will head there to see Ike albeit Claudia doubts there will be much in the way of communication. I will report to you all who, no doubt, share my admiration for Ike. He is an extraordinary aviator amongst the rest of us mere pilots. His wry sense of humor is something none of us will ever forget along with his superb airmanship. Please join me in including Ike in your thoughts and prayers. Together, we might just help Ike prove the doctor's wrong about one 91 year old American hero. -Billy Walker (2/20/15) FLacebook - FL Club A great WWII story by Ike is in the Winter 2006 FL News, page 11. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News.html -Jake Lamkins (2/21/15) I just got this info about Ike. Certainly my thoughts and prayers are with Ike and Claudia. What a kind, calming man. I so liked flying with him. You are right, his humor and professionalism speak for themselves. Please keep us posted. Sincerely, Lynda Schudel Lane Cheryl and I visited Ike today. He instantly recognized me by name then all communication was lost. The prognosis is absent encouragement. The medical staff predicts organ shut-down soon given the antibiotic treatments have not been successful. I will keep you all posted on any changes. I anticipate Ike will soon be moved to Hospice. Please keep Ike and Claudia in your prayers. -Billy Walker (2/22/15) Sadly, Ike has Gone West early this morning. No doubt Captain Jack Schade was there to greet him along with many friends and family... There will be a private grave-side service at the National Veterans Cemetery in Phoenix with a memorial service in SLC later this spring or summer. -Billy Walker (2/27/15) Great guy! -Lisa Kerr Zeman (2/27/15) Clear skies and smooth sailing old friend. -Robert Williams (2/27/15) I'm truly sorry to hear this. ... -Kim McCaleb Austin (2/27/15) He was a great guy, the best! Location: 23029 North Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix. The American Legion Honor Guard will be there to salute along with a trumpeter for "Taps." Ike learned to fly in the Boeing 75 "Stearman." A "Missing Man" formation of Stearman's will be over head at 1100. Possibly, the CAF B-17,"Sentimental Journey," will salute Col. Isaacs as well. -Billy Walker (3/2/15) They laid ike Isaacs to rest today and at 5pm on channel 3 news in Phoenix the man who flies the news chopper gave him the nicest tribute.. A history of his war years a beautiful pic of a 727 in blue and gold of course and then the Stearman bi-planes with Billy flying 934 and talking to the news guy did a missing man flyover and THEN they flew the Flying Fortress over. The same plane he flew 50 missions in WW2. It was wonderful and a great tribute to a member of the greatest generation! -Linda Casey Hamala (3/5/15) It sounds like a beautiful tribute to him. -Karen Ward Berry (3/5/15) I emailed Bruce Haffner, the chopper news guy, and he sent me this link (wait for the Harrison Ford bit to end). He also said this: "It was our honor to fly with the Stearman Squadron and B-17. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKgwIZUI6yQ&feature=youtu.be -Roberta Brashears (3/5/15) Thank u Roberta., that was beautiful! Thank u for sharing. -Kim McCaleb Austin (3/5/15) That was wonderful.Thank you for sharing. -Rosemary Wirth VanEpps (3/5/15) THANK YOU, Bert! I'm starting to work on Ike's memorial webpage and I'll include that link. Ike and I had one thing in common - we both had adventures on Molokai. See the Winter 2006 FL News - http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News.html -Jake Lamkins (3/6/15) Bruce Haffner is likely the greatest helicopter news reporter in the country. He flies his own R-44 and is a fixed-wing pilot as well. Bruce goes out of his way to cover our flights honoring America's veterans. The link below is Bruce's story about one of America's finest. Col. Seymour W. "Ike" Isaacs was just 18 years old when he went to war as a command pilot of the ubiquitous Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress." Ike flew more than 50 missions during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Much of his post WWII flying was with the Air Force Reserves and the Utah Air National Guard all while being an active pilot for the historic Frontier Airlines. Imagine, being 18, never having driven an automobile, and becoming the pilot in command of America's four engine heavy bomber, the B-17. Ike's story was not all that uncommon for those dark days of our country's history. Frontier pilot, Ace Avakian, also grew up in New York and learned to drive AFTER WWII. Truly, the Jack Schade's, Ike Isaacs, and Ace Avakian's were our Greatest Generation. Blue Skies & Tailwinds... -Billy Walker (3/6/15) FLacebook - FL Club SLC DEN pilot Ike Isaacs' memorial webpage has been posted. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ike_Isaacs.html Still need an obituary for Ike. -Jake Lamkins (3/9/15) Thank you, Jake. That is a great tribute to a great Man! -Carol Bartley (3/9/15) Billy Walker sent an obituary and it's posted at Ike's webpage. -Jake Lamkins (3/11/15) My name is Jen Chaffier. My grandfather, Bill Muntzer, was the radio operator on the the B-17 "Sugah". I was heart broken to hear about the loss of Ike. He had been my pen pal for the last couple years as I started researching my grandfather's WWII history in more depth. I would love to be able to reach out to his wife, Claudia or to his friend, Billy Walker. Could you pass on my information to Billy please? I had been prepping a package to send to Ike when I read online that he had passed. I had received photos from the son of another crew member and was wanting to share with him. I would love to be able to send my last letter and copies of the photos to her if she would want them. I certainly do not want to add to her grief. Your page for Ike was wonderful, I want to provide you another link to some information if you wanted it concerning his WWII service. It's a wonderful website that is really just now getting up and running. http://www.americanairmuseum.com http://www.americanairmuseum.com/person/203997 Ike was always held in the highest regards by my grandparents and our family. He was a truly amazing man and I am so so grateful to have known him. -Jen Chaffier (3/30/15) Here's some photos from Ike's box of photos. His widow, Claudia, sent them.
