HERB SCHMIDT 1959 - 1972 STATION AGENT, SALES REPRESENTATIVE, DISTRICT SALES MANAGER, REGIONAL SALES MANAGER DEN BIL MKC BROTHER OF STATION MANAGER TOM SCHMIDT April 23, 1961 The Hays Daily News from Hays, Kansas · Page 5 Mrs. Herbert C. Schmidt and Herbert C. Schmidt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo C. Schmidt of Derby, Colo., were married April 22 at Cure d'Ars Catholic Church in Denver. Rev. John N. Haley officiated at the double ring ceremony. Music at the ceremony was played by Robert Cavarro, organist and Mrs. David L. Sexton, soloist, sang Schubert's "Ave Maria", "Panis Angelicus" and "On This Day". Vases of white gladioli and yellow chrysanthemums decorated the altar. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of embroidered silk organza with a fitted bodice accented with a modified scoop neckline and short cap sleeves. The very bouffant skirt swept to a full chapel train. A narrow satin cummerbund ended in a butterfly bow. Her full pouf veil was caught to a single large organza rose centered with seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of white roses centered with a white orchid. Miss Lorraine Paproski, sister of the bride and maid of honor, and the bridesmaids, Miss Doris Melliger and Miss Sharon Robb, wore short dresses of aqua silk over taffeta and earned cascades of yellow and white carnations. Mar- dyl Mercer, niece of the bridegroom, was flower girl. Ceasar Crestoni was the best man, Jack Bass and Paul Gildwell were the groomsmen and David L. Sexton and Glen Mercer were the ushers. A reception was held at Cunningham's Restaurant for 160 guests. Following a wedding trip to Mexico City, the couple is at home at 1717 Paris St., Aurora, Colo. Mr. Schmidt, a sales representative for Frontier Airlines in Denver, is a graduate of St. Joseph's Military Academy and attended Regis College in Denver. -https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/1239149/ (4/20/21) December 13, 1964 The Billings Gazette from Billings, Montana • Page 35 Herb Schmidt To Kansas City Herb C. Schmidt, Frontier Airlines regional sales manager here the past five years, has been promoted to a like job for western Missouri and eastern Nebraska with headquarters in Kansas City. -https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/418006966/ (4/16/24) Hi Jake. My brother Herb Schmidt is having trouble getting signed up. Can you send him info on how to accomplish this. He was in sales for many years, working in DEN, BIL, and MKC. Thanks. -Tom Schmidt (7/31/05) Hi Tom, I'll send Herb an invite to the FL Club right away. Herb, email me if you want to get the newsletter and our website index is below. -Jake Lamkins (7/31/05) I was glad to see this web site, found out about it from my brother,Tom, who also worked for Frontier. I started on February 7, 1959 and worked until April 22, 1972. ( I got caught in the Al Feldman purge like so many, Jerry Bacon comes to mind). I started on the ramp in Denver at Stapleton loading DC3's working with John Morgan, Jack Bass, Sam Paulson (Sam was known as stuttering Sam but when he use to PA you thought this guy should be in radio). In July 1959 I was hired in the sales department and work for Vern Carlson, who was the District Sales Manager. I worked with so many fine people in sales in Denver, Billings and Kansas City. I was in Billings when Flt. 32 crashed in Miles City, Montana, I had returned from a sales trip to Miles City and Glendive and was visiting with the crew before it left Billings. I received a call around 1:30 AM from Vern Carlson advising me of the situation and asked that I go over to Dan Gough's place and comfort his widow until her minister could come by to see her. This had to be one of the hardest things I ever did while at Frontier. Ken Huber the Captain was a great person and liked by all. I knew everyone on the flight that night except the passenger from Williston, ND. We were a close knit group at the Billings domicile, Ellie Bastar was the Chief Stewardess and Ben Stuart the Chief Pilot. Dan Gough's widow was pregnant with her second child at the time of the accident (Flt. 32 was the first plane to have fatalities on Frontier). On November 7, 1964 Kurt, our second son was born at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings and my wife's room mate was Dan Gough's widow who also had a son. Life is full of many strange things. I was transfered to Kansas City as Regional Sales Manager, January 1965. I was involved in setting up Board of Director meeting in KC, our first ticket office in the Muehlebach Hotel, first jet service, setting up the sales operation in St. Louis along with a ticket office. It was my suggestion for the new B-727s name of Arrow Jet. It was great working for Lew Dymond (the best president Frontier ever had), Paul Burke, Larry Sills, Ken Smith and Tom Makurat. Some of the sales people I can remember, Dick Cummings (my first sales rep) Paul Glidwell, Jim Pliler, Jerry Bacon. I have every issue from January 1959 through April 1972 of the Sunliner News, Arrow Jet News and Frontier News and countless photos. I am looking forward to the MCI get together in September. After leaving Frontier, I stayed in the sales and marketing working in different capacities--- District Sales Manager, General Sales Manager and VP of Sales. The companies were in marketing and printing and worked in Kansas City and Oklahoma City (Saw Doyle Johnson numerious times while leaving there) . I also spent sometime in Missoula, MT working with my brother Tom. I still live in the Kansas City metro area in Lenexa, KS and working full time as a sales assistant to a realtor. I got my real estate license 3 years ago. I enjoy working and plan to as long as my health is good - I turned 70 in May. I did have open heart surgery in June of 1994 a quadruple by-pass but I listen to my cardiologist and eat very little red meat, walk 5 times a week 3 miles at time. It's sad to see some of my old friends who have died, Vern Carlson, Larry Sills, Dick Cummins, Ann Yanulavich and more. Life is very special and we need to live it to the fullest every day. My wife of 44 years, Rosemarie, has had some medical challenges this past year but is doing much better now. Our sons, Eric and Kurt live in KC metro, Eric works for Federal Express (was with Eastern until they went out of business), Kurt works for American Century Investments. We have have 5 grand children, Eric's newest son Alex was born last week. There are 3 grandsons and 2 grand daughters. I hope to get some e-mails from some of you. You can reach me @ falherb@yahoo.com. Thanks------- -Herb Schmidt (8/1/05) Hi Herb, Thanks for the nice email yesterday. Did you get the invite to the FL Club that I sent you. The FL News is $10 per year to cover costs. It's up to 24 pages now and a quarterly. Send me your mailing address and I'll get a copy off to you. Check out our webpages at the link below. -Jake Lamkins (8/2/05) Yes I would like to receive the newsletter. I also have received two messages since my msg, one from an old friend from my days in Billings and elsewhere - Ted Simmons. Thanks, -Herb Schmidt (8/4/05) Yes, Larry Sills was a close and personal friend and my boss and mentor after Vern Carlson went into the home office. Larry died at the age of 39 in Denver, it was a heart attack and it happened while he was talking to his wife Donna, (Bunny) on the telephone. This would have been in October of 1971. Larry at the time was the head of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Denver. He also was part of the purging going on after Al Feldman took over. I saw his wife on several occasions in Denver as she was working in Continental's reservation office but that was at least 20 years ago. His oldest son Chris had open heart surgery when he was approximately 4 years old. I saw the comments about George Slivka, I first met George in 1959 when he was the station manager in Cheyenne. He was a great guy and in meetings used to say let's lay it out on the table. We all had a good laugh about that. I saw where Bill Monday wrote about George and was wondering could send me his email address? Bill is also an old friend. Is there a list of who is enrolled in the ex-Frontier group on the web site? Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, -Herb Schmidt (8/4/05) I noticed in the Billings get together several people from the past. One in particular Mary Ellen Metzger (maiden name was Geiger) and she was the Chief Stewardess before Ellie Bastar. I also read the the information of DC3 #276 that hit the mountain, I knew Dave Welling , a great guy and pilot. When ever we had 276 come through Denver or I rode on it, I remembered the incident. I was very good friends with Rick Cochron who was killed on #276 on take off in Denver and his twin brother Dick who was also a pilot for Frontier. I also noticed in the Denver get together that Larry Sills' widow, Donna (Bunny) was on the list of attendees. It's funny how you start to remember things that you hadn't thought about for years. Jake, I got distracted with phone calls and forgot to mention regarding #276 the stewardess on board was Donna Bailey she was referred to as Beetle Bailey by most of the FL'ers. Also I have a lot of pictures from the Frontier days and when I get a little time I will look and see if there might be something you might be interested in for the web site and the newsletter. Be patient with me they are stored away in boxes. -Herb Schmidt (8/9/05) Hi Herb, I'm always looking for FL photos, newsletter & magazines. So, anything you send will be appreciated. I rcall you emailed earlier; "I have every issue from January 1959 through April 1972 of the Sunliner News, Arrow Jet News and Frontier News and countless photos." Photocopies of those newsletters would be great. I'm glad you got in touch with Bill and thanks for the informative emails. -Jake Lamkins (8/9/05) Thanks for your reply, I noticed on the front of the summer 05 Frontier News that you received photos from Cal Reese is the Cal Reese who was Station Manager in Denver? If it is I worked for him when I was hired as an agent. Does he have an email address? There's also a FL pilot called Beetle Bailey. -Herb Schmidt (8/9/05) That's the one and only Cal! He's been a big help over the years with the newsletter. He is not online but I'll tell him hello from you when I phone him. -Jake Lamkins (8/9/05) Hi, Jake, are you coming to the KC reunion this weekend? The reason I'm asking I found my old news letters and other FAL stuff and have some extras and also a color photo of a Central CV240. I have made a copy of the April 1959 Sunliner News with an article on stewardess, Pat Fackenthal. She died in 2000 and married name was Pat Fackenthal Forehand this - will give you a picture of her for the obits. Looking forward to hearing from you if you're not coming I will mail them to you. -Herb Schmidt (9/6/05) I'll be watching the mail for your packet. This ol arthritis makes it unlikely I'll make the reunion. -Jake Lamkins (9/6/05) I'm mailing the goodies to you this morning, be careful it is pretty full with newsletters, photos, etc. Let me know when you receive and what you think. -Herb Schmidt (9/7/05) Email from Herb to Dan Gough's son: Hi Dan, My name is Herb Schmidt and I was the salesman in Billings when you dad died due to the crash of Flt 32. I was called the night of the crash to go over and see and stay with your mother until her minister came over to see her. I knew your dad and the entire crew on Flt 32 including the agent from Miles City who was in the jump seat. When my youngest son was born on November 7, 1964 at St. Vincent's Hospital your mother was my wife's room mate, I can't remember if your birth date was the same. What a small world. Where are you living and your mother? You can see my complete bio with Frontier in messages for the obituary of Ben Stuart, who was the Chief Pilot in Billings, when your dad was based there. Hope to hear from you. -Herb Schmidt (9/7/05) Email from Dan to Herb: Hello there! Wow, it is good to hear from you. Thanks for contacting us. My wife & I are in Albuquerque and my mother is in East Texas. I look forward to sharing more with you & vice versa. I will talk to my mother and let her know we have heard from you. I was born on November 6, and I will tell you this much, I guess flying is in my blood. My wife & I enjoy flying around the country in our own plane. We have company now but I look forward to corresponding with you later. It might be next week before I can e-mail again. Your friend, -Daniel Gough Denig (9/7/05) Email to Herb after he sent packet of FL materials on 9/9/05: Thank you, my friend, for the great packet you sent. Lots of terrific info. I'm sending you a little something, along with extending your subscription, as a token of appreciation. Can you ID the flight attendant in the 8X10 glossy photo you sent? -Jake Lamkins (9/9/05) Re: photo of Lew Dymond milking the cow, I was fortunate to go with him and others including, Ed Gerhardt, Vern Carlson after the board of directors meeting in Billings in July 1964. We spent one day and night at the ranch in Pray, Mt (which is just north of the entrance to Yellowstone National Park) and then two days at Jenny Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park. I guess it was my reward for a great board meeting in Billings. I still have the thank you letters from Lew Dymond, Ed Gerhardt, Bill Mitchell, Ken Smith reference the meeting. Any other questions please let me know. -Herb Schmidt (9/9/05) Hi Jake, First of all I couldn't find any pictures of Don Havens in the 60's Frontier News. I'm sending to you today copies of January, February-March,April, May, June-July and August 1959 of Sunliner News, also an insert of the Frontiersman which was discontinued after June-July issue, it was an insert in the Sunliner News. You will see in the June-July issue picture and article on Zick Burns the mechanic who designed the crescent and arrow. I also wanted to mention J. Dan Brock who was VP of Sales, he was a real gentleman and great leader. Dan left Frontier when Bud Maytag sold Frontier and bought National Airlines and Dan became VP Sales for National Airlines. In the August issue, last page you'll see a picture and article about a contest held in Denver about the movie North by Northwest with Gary Grant. This was the first promotion I worked on as a new sales rep. I was in the ticket office when the picture was taken and worked with Bill Hastings the manager of the RKO Orpheum theatre. The newsletters brings back alot of great memories. I will be sending you more copies. The early days of Frontier and change to Convair 340's was very exciting for us who started when Frontier had only 12 DC3s and started the big expansion. -Herb Schmidt (9/26/05) Hi Jake, I'm looking forward to the new newsletter. I've noticed in your up dates in the obits the pictures and articles from the last Sunliner News I send you. When reading these I had forgotten things but immediately remember the people and knowing and working with them at Frontier. In the obits, I was reading Mo Osborne's and then remembered he was in my agents training class. We were hired February 7, 1959 and used to see Mo in Montana when he was a relief agent. I also remembed that he filled in at Miles City after the crash of Flt. #32. I plan to make copies of the next newsletters and send them to you hopefully by next week. I'm also planning to order a CV580 t-shirt from Broome's web sight. Do they run a little big? It depends sometimes I wear L or XL. Have a great week. -Herb Schmidt (10/18/05) Hi Jake, I'm sending newsletters tomorrow, Oct 21,2005, they are Oct/Nov 1959 to May 1962 , you will notice so time gaps, that is because they didn't always come out on regular basis, I put some footnotes with most of the issues. You will have alot of photos for updates for the obits, these issues contain most people I was very familar with at FL. Please let me know when you receive them. -Herb Schmidt (10/20/05) Hi Jake, Wanted you to know I actually got your packet sent yesterday, via priority mail, I finished sooner then I anticipated. Received the Fall newsletter and it was great. I noticed a e-mail from Bonnie Dahl and she metioned Ellen Quinn and Jim McGhee. I'm e-mailing her to find out about Jim because if it is who I think it is he was in Billings when I was and over the years lost contact with each other. Also in the packet there is a picture of Ellen Quinn, one of the last newsletters with another stewardess. Ellen was a great gal also. Also on the notes I've attached I forgot a couple of things------ in the May-June '61 issue a picture of farewell to Ann Williams, I was out of town on FAL sales business when the picture was taken but wanted to mention Jim Pliler in the picture. Jim and I have been close friends since 1955. We met and worked together in the Air Force in personnel. I helped him get on with Frontier and he left when Maytag bought National, was there and stayed on after Pan Am bought National. He got cut as manger in Pensecola before Pan Am went under. We have kept in contact all of these years by mail and phone. Jim now lives in Charlotte, NC. Also in Feb ' 62 issue about Sun Country pictures, #21, Jack Bass, meet when I started in Denver station and became good friends in fact Jack was a usher at my wedding, before Frontier Jack was a fireman on the Denver & Rio Grande railroad (Larry Sill's father was an exectutive with the DR&G). Also notice where I put note sitting in breakroom with Dave Burr I forgot to note the next page putting up a display with Don Alexander. I'll keep in touch and send you more copies. -Herb Schmidt I got the 15 Sunliners today that you sent. They are fantastic and fill a gap in the FL history. I extended your subscription several more years in appreciation. Regards, -Jake Lamkins (10/24/05) Hi Jake, I was looking at the web site and found a couple of errors, in the section Frontier Airlines which shows the DC-3's. The one parked on the tarmac with the crescent and arrow it says in the mid 1950's, that paint job would have been in late 1959 or early 60's. In the Frontier Collection it mentions with photo of CV-340 at Jackson Hole that Frontier started flying them in 1955 it was July 1959. Everytime I get in the site I discover even more, like Yakof Smirnuff used to say " What a Country"," I say" What an airline". I'll send you some more newsletters where I left off and get into mid 1960's. -Herb Schmidt (11/8/05) Thanks for the tip on the two errors. I've corrected them and spruced up both pages. Check out all the Convairs at FL: http://members.tripod.com/~DENFL/FL_580s-Table.htm Regards, -Jake Lamkins (11/8/05) Hi Jake, I was saddened by the news of the passing of Jim McGee, I 'm so glad that Jim and I talked for a good hour last December. I mailed today, Priority Mail, some more newsletters. They are from January 1963 through March/April 1967, a lot of history and pictures of movie stars and celebrities who flew Frontier during those days. Moving from CV-340's into 580's and then the 727's. Let me know if you receive them OK. -Herb Schmidt (2/2/06) I am in your debt again. The packet arrived and they are super. Thanks again so much. -Jake Lamkins (2/6/06) Hi Jake, Received the newsletters and wanted to thank you, what great reading. I saw people again that I hadn't thought about and remembered from the good old days. I wanted to ask and see if you have an e-mail address for Ollie Brunz, Don Glover and Jim Montgomery? The afore mentioned people were all good friends and co-workers when I was with FL. It was sad to find out that John Scott died in an untimely death, I knew John very well also. If you want to put this out to every one you may: The article in the Fall 2004 Frontier News about the hail storm in GRI, yes it was a CV-340, 73130, Sunliner Navajo and the first in the fleet purchased from United Airlines. This happened in June of 1959, I worked on the ramp for Frontier and remember it well when we found out about it. There is a picture in the May/June 1959 issue of the Sunliner News showing this aircraft for a open house at Stapleton. I don't know if I ever told you but I almost became a member of ALEA, I sent in my money in July 1959 (because my first six months were almost up) and later that week was notified that I was hired as a sales rep for Frontier and would be working for Vern Carlson in Denver. I had to write to ALEA and advise of the job change and ask for my money back. The more I read the newsletters the more great memories of working for the best company in the world. -Herb Schmidt (2/13/06) Glad you like the newsletters. Yes, the news about John Scott was terrible. Another bad one was Larry Vannoy, FL mechanic, murdered near PHX a few years ago. Details on Larry are in the FL memorial webpages. Larry's wife was a FL res agent. -Jake Lamkins (2/13/06) Hi Jake: Here are the newsletters I came up with----- Nov 1966 (this is the issue that has the fold out of N7270F in color on the front), Jan 1968, March 1968, April 1968 (has picture of Bill McKenney in it), November 1968, March 1969, May 1969, May 1969, August 1969, September 1969, December 1969, January 1970, March-April 1970, May-June 1970, July 1970, August 1970. Let me know. -Herb Schmidt (5/8/06) Hi Herb, I need all those you listed except Nov 66 Mar 68 Apr 68 Mar 69 I already have those four. Thanks again for your help, -Jake Lamkins (5/8/06) Hi Herb, Thanks for the great newsletters you sent. They are wonderful! I've added a couple of years to your FL NEWS subscription as a small token of appreciation. -Jake Lamkins (5/13/06) Hi Jake, I have made copies of the remainder of the news letters and will send them to you tomorrow. I had to reduce a few because they went to a bigger foremat in 1970 but they are legible. One special treat, included is the November 27, 1971 issue which commenarates the 25th anniversary of Frontier it is 12 pages. I didn't know if you had that issue of not. -Herb Schmidt (11/14/06) Thanks very much, Herb. I'll be on the lookout for them. -Jake Lamkins (11/15/06) Hi Herb, I'm so indebted to you for your generosity. Thanks very much for the lastest batch of newsletters. The least I can do is make you a lifetime subscriber to the FL NEWS. Best regards and thanks again, -Jake Lamkins (11/20/06) Subject: Zick Burns photos Looking at the photos from Zick Burns wife, I realized that the crash of the CV340 in GRI in Dec 1962 was N73130. This aircraft was the first CV340 purchased from United Airlines in early 1959, I was a station agent at the time working in Denver on the ramp and remember when it first arrived, boy did we feel good. Later that year I went in to sales for FL and in 1960 we were sales blitzing cities where the new Convair service would start. As a preview they had billboards announcing the new service showing the aircraft and proclaiming that the Radar Convairs were coming. While in Montrose on the sales blitz I called on a local merchant and told him I was with Frontier and we were upgrading their service. His comment was yes I noticed you bought some new Corvairs. The Chevrolet Corvair came out about this time, it was the one with the rear engine (this info for the younger group) So many great memories about a really great airline. -Herb Schmidt (2/20/07) One after thought regarding CV 340, N73130 it's name was Sunliner Navajo, all the DC 3s and Convairs were called Sunliners and were named after cities or states. The Convairs were all named after the different Indian tribes in the area served by Frontier. -Herb Schmidt (2/20/07) Hi Jake, I was sorry to hear about the death of Orval Bowen. I knew Orval during my 13 plus years with FAL, he was a great person. Orval was very good at scheduling and what ever he did while with Frontier. We had some good times during and after sales meetings as Orval was usually there for input about flight schedule changes. I remember saying to him many times, hey Orval how is your brother Wilbur? Orval would just grin and then try something later on to get even. We will miss his smiling face and great attitude. -Herb Schmidt. (4/9/07) Thanks, Herb. I added your note to Orval's webpage. Jake Lamkins (4/9/07) Jake, I noticed that Errol Klein died last year, Errol was a salesman for Central in KC and when the merger took place he then worked for me as a Sr. Sales Rep in KC. I was the Regional Sales Manager with offices in the Muehlebach Hotel. Alice was the ticket agent at the Central downtown ticket office and became my secretary. Errol was a good person and did a great job working for me. -Herb Schmidt (10/29/09) Re PHX agent Joe Oliver has died JOE WAS A GREAT GUY. I FIRST MET HIM IN BILLINGS IN THE EARLY 60S WHEN JOE WAS THE RELIEF AGENT FOR MONTANA AND BELIEVE PART OF WYOMING, AND I WAS THE DISTRICT SALES MANAGER. I SAW HIM ALOT AS HE COVERED VACATIONS, ETC. THEN I CAME TO KC IN 1965 AS REGIONAL SALES MANAGER AND JOE ENDED UP HERE ALSO MY BROTHER TOM'S ABOUT HIM ARE CORRECT. HOW OLD WAS HE? -HERB SCHMIDT (1/24/11) JAKE, IT WAS ON THIS DAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1959, ALSO A MONDAY THAT I STARTED MY FIRST DAY WITH FRONTIER, WORKING ON THE RAMP AT STAPLETON IN DENVER, MY HOW TIME FLIES (52 YEARS). I ALSO WANTED TO MENTION REGARDING THE PASSING OF MARGE BUSSELL, SHE WAS A VERY NICE PERSON AND I BELIEVE IF YOU CHECK SHE ALSO FOR A TIME WAS EITHER THE CHIEF STEWARDESS IN DENVER OR THE ASSISTANT CHIEF STEWARDESS IN DENVER. See her memorial webpage at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Marg_Bussell.html -Jake Lamkins (2/7/11) JAKE, I WAS SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THE PASSING OF KEN STEMLER. KEN JOINED FRONTIER IN 1960 IN SALES AND I HELPED IN HIS INITIAL TRAINING. KEN AND I HAD A LOT IN COMMON AS WE BOTH SERVED IN THE AIR FORCE WITH HIM LEAVING IN 1960 AND I IN LATE 1958. KEN ALSO HEADED UP AIR FREIGHT WHILE AT FRONTIER AND WAS AVERY CAPABLE GUY. HE WILL BE MISSED. I RECEIVED YOUR FALL ISSUE AND WAS PLEASE TO SEE THE SECTION ON 1959 AS YOU KNOW THAT IS WHEN I STARTED IN FEBRUARY OF 1959. -HERB SCHMIDT (10/13/11) Hi Herb, Thanks for the additional info on Ken. I'll be building his memorial webpage in a few days. I thought you would like the 1959 theme as I recalled that's when you started. Take care, -Jake Lamkins (10/13/11) JAKE, I WAS SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THE DEATH OF CAL REESE, HE WAS MY FIRST MANAGER WHEN I STARTED AS AN AGENT ON FEBRUARY 7, 1959. HE WAS GREAT TO WORK FOR AND ENCOURAGED ME TO APPLY FOR A SALES POSITION IN JULY OF 1959. I GOT THE JOB AND WORKED FOR VERN CARLSON.
