Immediately "some 19 planes were involved in (the) search and a large group of aircraft (flew) regular patrols. Scores of people visited the airport, which was a beehive of activity, and planes landed and took off for the search in close intervals." January 29th: For four days the search continued without a clue when tragedy struck again. While searching for the California bound plane, a "Civil Air Patrol pilot and assistant station manger for Bonanza Airlines, Ken May, along with Herb Chesney, a representative from Frontier Airlines, crashed into a canyon on Mingus Mountain, one half mile south of the Mingus Mountain Inn late (in the) afternoon." "The crash was witnessed by a CAP pilot from Flagstaff, Beth Maxwell, who radioed a report to the control tower at the Prescott Airport," the paper reported. "A ground rescue unit, there to help once the missing California men's plane was located, rushed to the scene." Ken May, age 26, was killed while Chesney, 20, suffered a skull fracture and severe facial lacerations from which he would eventually recover. It was determined that the carburetor on May's two-seat Cub iced-up causing the crash. The search continued for the 2 missing California men, but to no avail. However, during this quest, a different wreck from the previous November was finally located "on a 6300 foot ledge 3 miles south of Mazatzal Peak in Tonto Basin." Finally, on February 8th, after over 365 hours of search time in the air, the hunt was called off. -http://prescottazhistory.blogspot.com/2019/03/1952-saw-six-air-accidents.html (5/22/24) Herb could not have started with Frontier in Kansas City, as his obituary says, because it was not served by the airline until March 1959. Most likely, he attended the airline training school there that many other agents did. The obit also says he graduated from high school in 1951 but the Clovis High School website shows him in the class of 1950 (https://www.curry.nmgenweb.us/photos8.htm). He was working for Frontier by Jan 1952, per the newspaper article, so I will show him starting with Frontier in 1951. The obituary also says he returned to Frontier upon discharge in 1955 then subsequently worked for Bonanza Airlines. Herb is not listed on the Nov 1955 or Nov 1956 employees rosters so he spent little time with the company before leaving for Bonanza. I will show him leaving Frontier in 1955. I found very few items on him in the Frontier files. -Jake Lamkins (5/23/24) FLacebook FLIGHT WEST POSTED HERB CHESNEY 1951 - 1955 STATION AGENT PRC http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Herb_Chesney.html Herb was nearly killed shortly after joining Frontier.
