HAL GROGG 1961 - 1982 PILOT GSW DAL DFW DEN I was leafing through the Obituary page today and although I can't supply any specific date info, on many of the pilot's listed there is no info at all. My memory is far from perfect but I thought I'd pass along what I remember about some of these guys. Harold Grogg: A quiet guy and a good pilot. Another cancer victim who might have beat it had he gone to a specialist instead of the local sawbones. -H.A. Worth, TX -Social Security Death Index (4/14/00) Anybody know of a pilot by the name of Harold D. Grogg? I just received an e-mail from a grandson of his, and he was wondering if I knew him. I did not. It seems that his grandson is also into flight simulation, and had seen a post that I made on a simulation forum. I told him I would check around and see if anyone remembered him. -Darrell Robson Posted at the FL Club (1/10/02) Darrell, ask his grandson if there's anything else he would like to add. I could make a webpage if we had a photo. -Jake Lamkins (1/10/02) I used to fly with Harold a lot, he was a great pilot, and about as easy going as they come. It was very sad when he passed on. -Bob Lebrecht (1/10/02) I agree with you, Bob. Harold was ex-Central and a great guy and pilot. -Clyde Hart (1/13/02) I knew Hal Grogg. I was a Flight Operations Instructor (Ground School) from 5 Sept 67 until the 24th of August 1986. Hal was the kind of PILOT that you enjoyed having in your class. He was quiet and dignified and always presented himself as a gentleman. Many fellow pilots always had great respect & admiration for him. -Frank Meyer (1/20/02) Posted at FL Club Re Hal - does anyone have a photo of him so I can make an obituary webpage for him? -Jake Lamkins (1/20/02) I think his grandson, Chris had some, but he was having trouble getting them to me. Hopefully, he'll get it worked out. -Darrell Robson (1/21/02) I was looking in the obits just to check and see if a couple of my uncles were listed. Uncle Harold died in 1982. I will see if Dad has some pictures. Dad has a lot of pictures of family. Uncle Harold died when I was 16. He was very smart and made sure his mortgage and car payments and everything he owed was set up that in case he died the bills would just go with him so to speak. As near as I can remember it worked out for the family. It was nice to see so many people saying great things about him. As his nephew I was guessing I might have been biased. He was always a very warm person. By the way just because ......... His son's name is Mitch and I will try to get him in here too. Now, he probably has some stories and pictures. -Mark Guthrie (2/14/05) This is Billie & Jack Leonard Curtis (Billy Jack Guthrie's cousin), are you Mark Guthrie, Billy Jack Guthrie's son? Harold Dean Grogg was Mildred Curtis Grogg's husband, they had 4 children - Steve, Tim, Cathy, and Mitch. They lived in Ft. Worth. Mildred was Billy Jack's cousin, so that would make Harold Dean Grogg your cousin in law. Mildred died in December of 1993,and is buried in Bluebonnet Cemetary in Colleyville, Tx, next to Harold Dean Grogg her husband. -Jack and Billie Curtis (2/15/05) Ken Schultz sent a packet of CN/FL memorabilia. Included were two 8X10 photos from Central Airlines that were not dated. Both featured three crew members - in front of and boarding a CV240: Dick Cottingham, Hal Grogg and Sandy Dietrich. One has a hangar and DC-3 in the background which looks like the CN hangar at GSW. So the time would be early 1960s, I think. Both Grogg and Cottingham are deceased. I don't have any other info on Dietrich. -Jake Lamkins (1/20/07) H D GROGG Seniority date of 7/17/61 on the 9/1/72 FL/ALPA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (2/2/07) Thanks for posting a picture of my uncle ...great shot. I was 16 when he flew West... I remember it like it was yesterday. He took good care of his family before and after he died. That's the time my father taught me about a special insurance addon that pays for any outstanding bills. The car his wife drove, the house they lived in, everything was paid for when he flew West. So when he went he took more than he had to. They musta let him fly a 747 outta here!!! I miss those days when our families were closer. Days weren't nearly as hectic and time wasn't so short when it wasn't my time to earn my keep. Now that it is, the best I can do is let my family members know I love them and hope they remember. -Mark Guthrie (2/4/07) My name is David Grogg, grandson to Harold "HAL" Grogg. Hal was a pilot, first with Central Airlines and then with Frontier Airlines. He flew the DC-3 (one of my personal favorites), the CV-240, CV-600, CV-580, and 737-200. He passed in January of '82, so regrettably I don't have data or stories to share, as I was very young when he "flew West." I do however have something I would like to dedicate as a tribute not only to him but for all who served both the CAL and FAL families, if you'll allow me. It is an illustration of a Frontier Airlines 737-200 with the green and gold livery, attached in this e-mail. The image of the FAL 737 was originally a screen capture from Microsoft Flight Simulator, in which I meticulously re-illustrated as you see here. It is a low resolution JPEG file, and thus is web-ready. It is highly detailed and beautifully rendered, and I believe it will appeal to everyone within the Frontier alumni. It would be my sincere honor if you would add it to your "FLypaper" section. I hope that it will be well received, and I thank you in advance for adding it. Thanks also for your dedication to the FAL community. Sincerely, and best regards, -David Grogg (4/9/10) Hi David, Thanks for the great pic of the 737. I'll post it at your granddad's memorial webpage on the FL website and share it with others in the FLamily. Do you have a good portrait type photo of Hal? I need a better pic for his webpage. Attached is one I have for you. I knew Hal clear back in the Central days. Real nice guy! -Jake Lamkins, CN/FL station agent 1964-86 (4/9/10) You're most welcome. As I said, it is my sincere honor to be able to contribute something hopefully worthy to the website; more so that it is on his memorial page. Unfortunately I don't have any portraits of him, though I wish I had. I may be able to find pictures of him with family, but nothing tying in with either Central or Frontier. I will see about asking some of the other family members though. Thank you so much for sending me this photo! And yes sir, he was definitely a very nice guy, and a great pilot. Thank you again! -David Grogg (4/9/10) Posted at the FL Club: Updated memorial webpage HAL GROGG 1961 - 1982 PILOT GSW DAL DEN http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Hal_Grogg.html Hal's grandson, David, sent a great pic of a FL 737 in his memory. Post your remembrances of Hal. -Jake Lamkins (4/9/10) I just saw that you have included a picture that my brother made for Hal's website. He forwarded your return email to me and I noticed that you had asked about more pictures of Hal. The first one is Hal with his beautiful wife Mildred The second is Hal in an airplane he was building for his son Mitch. The airplane type was a 1-1 scale Curtis P-6E Hawk. It wasn't meant to be flyable but it sure was pretty when it was finished! The third is a picture of Hal with his wife and their kids: (from right to left) Steve, Tim, Mitch and Cathy. I hope these help. Thank you so much for honoring our Granddad with this wonderful tribute to him! I'm Chris Grogg, Hal's Grandson and David Grogg's brother. -Chris Grogg (4/9/10) Hi Chris, Thanks a bunch for the pix! I'll post them at Hal's webpage. Can you date them for me? -Jake Lamkins (4/10/10) I don't have the dates for them. Sorry about that. -Chris Grogg (4/9/10) I remember Hal Grogg to be a kind and gentle man who never complained about anything. Once when Hal and I attempted a takeoff from Muskogee Okla the crosswind was more than the DC-3 could handle. We went down the runway and every time the tail came up we almost ran off the runway. We went the entire length of the runway and stopped. I said "OK Groggy, we will take off from this end. You handle the throttles and I will wrap the ailerons all the way over". I looked up and a man was standing right inside the unlocked door and said "I want to get off this airplane." Hal died of cancer at about age 40. His weight went from 180 to about 80 pounds in six months. The good men sometimes vanish like the butterfly at the end of summer. -Hugh Barron (5/7/10) David, your grandfather was one heck of a wonderful guy to work with. I remember when he got sick and then had to stop working. He did not complain, but was very matter of fact about it all. God bless him still. -Sharon Trumble (5/26/12) Larry Curtis I am moved to tears over Uncle Harold's memorial. I have no words to adequately thank you for that. He was most definitely my most favorite uncle, and not just because he flew... he was an awesome person and a fantastic uncle to have in my life. Always encouraging us and was a great example to everyone that the sky is truly the limit. Before Uncle Harold hired-on with Central, he was a contract flight instructor for the US Army in the old L-19 Birddog. He worked at Lowe Field at Fort Rucker, AL. When I was in the Army I more or less followed in his path as I, too, was a flight instructor at Lowe Field in the Army's UH-1 helicopter. That will forever be an aspect of my life I will be most proud of. (12/26/14) FLacebook postings with pic of Hal Casi Khushf I love this picture. Heather Newberry Grogg So neat! Kimberly Wooley He was so handsome, like a movie star!! David Grogg One of my very favorite pics of him. Larry Curtis Uncle Groggy was definitely one of those "Dashing, Debonaire, Man-About-Town, Swashbuckling Aviators...in the Image of Errol Flynn." Dennis Guthrie You missed knowing one heck of a man, Chris!!! I wish we all could have had him a lot longer than we did, He was awesome!!!
