GLENN EMMONS 1950 - 1950 / 1954 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT, ASST STATION MANAGER, STATION MANAGER RIW ISN LNK GRI OMA HOU DEN GEG Jake, Bob White and I been chatting back and forth and he told me that you publish a FL newspaper. If you would put me on your mailing list, I would really appreciate it. Let me know and I will send you the 10.00 bucks, or whatever you charge. Sure would like to contact some of the old FL bunch. Let me know and thanks. -Glenn Emmons (5/9/02) Thanks for the FL NEWS, it is really good. It's surprising how many people in the paper I knew & some I had forgotten about - many in the obit list. I started with FL at RIW, 1950. Had a stint inthe army during the KOREAN conflict, then returned to RIW in 1954. Went to ISN as S/M in 1956. When FL expanded into NE, I went to LNK as S/M, I worked in LNK, OMA and GRI in NE, Then went to GEG as city Mgr for FL where I was when FL quit. I was manager at GRI when Flt. 101 was Hi-jacked. Not one of our better days. (Oct 20, 1977) Thanks again, -Glenn Emmons (5/10/02) Subject: Re: FL Club New obit webpage Clay Tanner was a RIW station agent. I worked with him, he had a son Edwin and his wife Joan. I worked briefly with Wendell Reinmuth in RIW back in 1954 and 1955, when I xfered lost track of him -Glenn Emmons (10/11/05) Thought I would send along with my subscription renewal a few FL happenings back in the early fifties that may be of interest to the old FL employees. Early in 1950, shortly after the mergers that started FL, I was hired and sent to RIW. At that time RIW was a three man station and our office was on one end of the Sky Club, a local night club, which was constructed of logs and had a gambling casino in the basement. Our operations area was about 25 by 10 feet. Usually, there would only be one agent on duty, but since I was new an experience agent worked with me. This particular agent was a young lady by name of Madge Cassinet, about 5 feet tall and 100 lbs. Soaking wet, but a stickler on proper procedures. Our communications between stations and the GO was an old teletype. When it failed and we had to transmit a LR we used the H-Marker. WRL was our closest station, managed at that time by Bill Monday, so we would yell into the mike for the H-Marker and give the LR info to WRL for transmission. The agent on duty handled all aspects of the operation. RIW was a fuel stop so the agent checked in the Psgrs, loaded the cargo and fueled the aircraft. Prior to the arrival we usually set out two three gallon containers of oil, this was normal consumption then. Upon arrival, all this had to be accomplished in about ten minutes or less. One of the problems we would encounter on occasion was that some of our pilots liked to spend time in the Casino. One pilot 1 remember in particular was Sam Grande. Sam liked to shoot craps. When the flight parked Sam was first off and made a dash for the Casino, if he had a hot hand it was difficult to get Sam back on the plane. Sam never did give us a delay. During the early years a lot of our existence depended upon mail pay. The postal department required FL to complete so many flights in order for us to receive mail pay. RIW at times had a WX problem as fog would settle over the airport, which was about 1000 feet above the city. In order to complete flights, as required, some our pilots, whom shall remain unknown, came up with a brilliant IFR approach. They would let down over the city, follow a line fence up the hill to where the airport was, and when the fence turned toward the airport, it was right on the end of the runway, so they would hop over the road and telephone lines onto the end of the runway. This worked fine and these gentlemen were very skilled in this IFR procedure except for one time. We could hear the aircraft on the runway, but couldn't see it. We received a call on the radio, "Do you have a wire cutter at the station?" It seems that the let down for the runway was just a mite soon and the tail wheel hooked the telephone line. We cut the wire off and the pilot taxied to the ramp. There was no apparent damage to the aircraft. I can think of quite a few interesting items in our early years, before all the regulations, now they seem like fiction. I admire your talent & dedication you demonstrate in your work with FL News. -Glenn Emmons (2/9/06) Hi Glenn, Got your letter today. Thanks for the kind words, your support and the article. Where all did you work during your FL career and what positions? Regards, -Jake Lamkins (2/9/06) Jake, As you know, I started with FL in RIW. Then served with Uncle Sam durijng thr Korean conflict. Went back to RIW, then a 12 man Stn with 6 flts a day. Made SSA there, then to ISN as SM. When FL awarded the 7 states by the CAB I went to LNK and opened that Stn as SM. Served in GRI as SM, then to OMA as assn't SM. Was sent to HOU for a short period as SM, back to OMA . When FL was being forced to go back to GRI, they sent me back there to open GRI up again. After several days of mass confusion, it was decided that FL didn't need to, so back to OMA again. When Peoples Express came into the picture, I was sent to DEN for awhile, then back to OMA. From there I went to GEG as SM and was there when FL threw in the towel. That's about the extent of my FL career. -Glenn Emmons (2/10/06) Jake: Do you have any contact info on Glenn Emmons? He was the Station Manager at GRI when I went after OLU closed. Then I worked for him again in OMA for about a year before 1986. Very nice man, very easy to work for. I only live less than 50 miles from where John Stark retired. I visited a couple of times after I found him. I always enjoyed visiting with him when he flew through OLU. Like you said no matter how bad the WX was we would just check them in, John would be in...I really miss going to see him and just visiting....Thx -Jerry Schultz (7/24/08) Hi Jerry, Glenn lives in Canby. MN and his eddress is gemmons@frontiernet.net I've cc'd him in so you can contact each other. -Jake Lamkins (7/24/08) Note with FL News renewal: Jake, Just a note about the article on Bill Cook in your last issue of FL News. I met Bill in early 1950 when I was hired by FL. & sent to RIW. Bill was the air mail carrier & picked up mail from Lander & RIW & met the flights. RIW was a 3 employee station & as I recall, had 3 flights, from DEN, SLC & BIL with intermediate stops. Lou Zellia was the s/m & Madge Casinet & myself the agents. Bill helped with the flights & he worked part time at a furniture store. Lou Zelia xfrd to PHX & Red Davis became s/m. The merger of the 3 airlines was just taking place. We had 3 different DC-3s flyin & we did the fueling, freight & TC. (1 agent) Good old days. -Glenn Emmons (2/13/10) Has Glenn Emmons passed away, where is he. Thank you. -Duane Phelps (10/27/12) Last I heard from Glenn 2/12/2011 when he renewed his FL News. He lives in Canby, MN. Worked with/for him in LNK. (Only there for two months when I transferred to MOT). First few days I was there, we went to the coffee shop for a chat. He said "I don't care how much time you spend in here as long as your work is done. I might even be here with you. But, if you haven't gotten your work done, we'll have another discussion." Don Miller Glenn was my manager in Lincoln and enjoyed working with him Mike White Glenn was my first manager at LNK. I still remember my interview and asking me where I would live, did I have a car. After LNK he went to GRI and was there during the hijacking. I never knew about his military service. Would have loved to hear some of his stories. He was a very kind and fair person.
