FROSTY FROST 1958 - 1986 PILOT GSW MKC MCI DEN I hired on at CEN 3/58 after a furlough from AAL. I spent 28 1/2 yrs with CEN/FAL, 25 as a Captain on the DC3, CV-600, CV 580,737 and finally the MD 80. The last 5 years before retirement, I was at CAL on the MD-80 and finally the 727. I had 5 coronary artery bypasses the year after I retired, one for each year at CAL. Doing fine now. Emmett Spinks is in a nursing home in the DFW area confined to bed with bad back problems. Lamar Knight died a few months ago from lung cancer etc. -Frosty Frost (11/28/98) Frosty was on the FL/ALPA MEC and Negotiating Committee in 1978 -Jake Lamkins (1/17/06) I really enjoyed reading the Texas Talk column from the CEN paper that you posted in Bill Ockerman's pages. If you have more of them they would really make interesting reading for us old farts. -Frosty Frost (9/19/06) How did the ACF CN pilot base progress? ACF GSW DAL DEN? Was DFW in there? -Jake Lamkins (9/20/06) Actually the CEN pilot base started at FTW (Meacham Field) then went to ACF which became GSW. After the merger FAL called it the DAL base and the crews reported to Love Field field, grumbling! But it became DFW after that airport opened and of course, when the base closed the guys that didn't take early retirement went to the DEN base, grumbling all the way! If you think we grumbled a lot after the CEN-FAL merger, you're right, and sometimes justifiably so. -Frosty Frost (9/20/06) Which do you prefer to be called? Frosty or Jack? I see it both ways. -Jake Lamkins (11/11/07) Well..........it really doesn't matter as long as you call me for supper. Up till about UAL/PEX/CAL time, I went by Frosty. But after that I decided to go by Jack because it was easier at introduction times and CAL already had a pilot at Newark by the name of Forrest Leaf who they all knew as "Frosty". Why?, beats me, but I had enough hassles at CAL and I didn't need any more so I went by Jack. I can kinda relate to Johnny Cash's song, 'A Boy Named Sue' since my given name is Herluf which hardly anybody outside Denmark has ever heard of. But my parents wanted a good Danish name and that was it. It's a rather common name in Denmark, I'm told, but why me Lord?! Most of my friends and my wife call me Frosty. Now you know! -Frosty Frost (11/11/07) H A FROST Pilot seniority date 3/21/58, #18, on the 9/1/86 FL/ALPA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (11/11/07) FL Club Post About Shutdown During all this mess I was in Chicago with the FAL ALPA negotiating committee trying to get some kind of agreement with UAL but to no avail. IIRC on Friday UAL, in all their great wisdom and compassion, announced to the ALPA group that the both the announcement that FAL was being shutdown and the shutdown would be made at 3PM after the NYSE closed for that day! .....You can see what UAL's concerns were...... This would of course have stranded thousands of our customers since operations were to cease at the same time. We managed (with alot of help from the FAL management) to get the announcement delayed until Saturday and the actual shutdown to occur at 2 AM Sunday when there were no FAL flights operating and there would be minimum inconvenience to the traveling public. -Frosty Frost (8/25/08) Just finished reading the new FL News and it was very interesting as always. However there was a couple of mentions of the CV0580 referred to as the "Mountain Master". This term was mostly used by the PR Department. Us working stiffs called it the "Roto Rooter" or other affectionate names but never the mountain master! -Frosty Frost (10/24/09) Well......after 20 years of part-time and 22 years of full-time living at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri We're back at Overland Park, Kansas. We're now living in a two bedroom apartment which was just good farmland when we left but has boomed by leaps and bounds since then. We're moved in but are still a long way from settled in with boxes still scattered all over the place. It was a rather sudden development although we have known this would probably happen sooner or later. A realtor from our neighborhood found an interested party who was moving from West Virginia to retire here among family and agreed to our price but wanted possession on January 5th 2015. We didn't have a place to move to in mind but two of our daughters who still live in the area managed to find this one and the buyers agreed to sweeten the deal with another 5 grand for the January 5th date so here we are. Health-wise, the move has been a physical strain. Melba came down with Influenza A (even with a flu shot) and my health was one of the reasons for doing all this so We're both moving rather slowly but getting up to speed a little each day. Awfully tired though. We hope this finds you all happy and healthy after the Christmas holidays and ready for a good and prosperous new year. We'd like to stay in touch and we still have e-mail service with Hughes.net but that will change too in the future. I'll keep you informed. -Frosty Frost (12/30/14) A couple of days back Ron Gallop mentioned that our pal, Frosty, isn't doing so well. Parkinson has him struggling some. He's wheelchair bound now. A couple of years ago Frosty and Melba moved from the Ozarks to MKC to be near their daughters. I spoke with Melba this morning. I reminded her what Frosty meant to the FLamily. He put in years upon years, with untold hundreds of hours on behalf of the pilot group. From 1982 until the Frontier demise, Frosty's efforts included ALL of the FLamily. I think of all the time many of us spent with Frosty during those dark and trying times when we tried saving our beloved airline. Frosty's, intellect, common sense, and, yes, his marvelous sense of humor made such a difference then. Please keep Frosty, Melba and the Frost Bunch in your thoughts and prayers. -Billy Walker (12/2/16) I heartily echo Billy's sentiments about Frosty, aka H. A. "Jack" Frost. He is a terrific guy and I've known him since 1964. He has helped me in many ways with the FL News and my other FL efforts over the years. His ALPA work goes way back to Central Airlined. -Jake Lamkins (12/2/16) Captain Jack Frost in Hospice Just got a call from Ron Gallop. He has received word from Melba that "Frosty" was placed in Hospice today. He is suffering from kidney failure and not doing well. Let's keep him in our thoughts and prayers. I'll keep y'all posted as I get more news. -Phil Stallings (5/25/17) Dear Melba, Ron Gallop called with word of Frosty's declining health. Knowing you and Frosty are dealing with one of life's great challenges, Cheryl and I have you in our thoughts and prayers. Frosty is a bonafide Frontier Hero! Those of us who had the honor of working side-by-side with Frosty during those dark days, that brought an end to our beloved airline, knew we were in the presence of a very special fellow. What Frosty brought to our MEC was a rare intellect along with his wit and perception that without which things would have turned out much worse for our pilot group. Since Ron's call, memories of the many working sessions and negotiations have come flooding back. Those were challenging times. Flying with Frosty was all joy. He was such fun to fly with. Every co-pilot who flew with Frosty thought he was their personal mentor. He just made us all feel good. I wish we could do that for him now... -Billy Walker (5/25/17) I just got a call from Melba Frost that Captain H. A. Frost (Frosty) flew west at 12:30 a.m. last night ... Thursday June 1, 2017. Frosty was as good as they come and I'm saddened by his flight west. -Jake Lamkins (6/17/17) FLacebook post on 4/23/21 Janice Gassett I miss "US" - we were such a family. Nothing will ever compare. I retired from Continental. One of my first layovers with CO was with Frontier Captain Frosty. We were all an Frontier crew. In the morning in the hotel, there was a United Crew and they would not let us ride with them..called us scabs. I could see the pain in Frostys eyes. They found out we were an all FL crew and they profusely apologized. It was heartbreaking. Henry Rankin I also had the same experience at a hotel. It was TWA that would not get on the van with us, all Frontier. This was a Midway layover. They also were embarrassed and when we saw them the next week they bought the drinks!!!!!!. Continental ran Frosty off to an early retirement. I imagine you know Frosty passed a few years back. I really enjoyed flying with him, laugh a minute. I retired from CO as well.
