He had been hospitalized since March 4 for treatment of a liver ailment. He retired from the Post in 1951 after 26 years of service. He first joined the paper in September 1924 as assisstant to the late publisher F G Bonfils. He was a graduate of the U S Military Academy and he once commanded the Observation Squadron of the Colorado National Guard. Survivors include the widow, a son and a daughter. A cousin, Miss Helen Bonfils, is secretary-treasurer of the Post. -The Greeley Daily Tribune on May 22, 1958 OBITUARY Former Business Head of Denver Post Dies at 62 Denver Maj F W Bonfils, 62, former business manager of the Denver Post and member of a prominent Colorado family, died Wednesday night at St Joseph's hospital. He became ill this spring at Las Vegas and entered the hospital March 4. He was under treatment for hepatitis of the liver. Bonfils was a graduate of the U S military academy and was business manager of the Denver Post from 1926 to May 1951 when he retired. He first joined the Post in September 1924 as assistant to the late publisher F G Bonfils. He was graduated from West Point in 1916 and saw service in France during World War I with the 4th Engineers, 4th Division. After the war he did work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology He was assigned to duty with the army's corps of engineers at Cincinnati performing engineering tasks along the Ohio River -Appleton Post Crescent on May 22, 1958 Monarch co-founder Fred Bonfil's memorial webpage has been upgraded. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Fred_Bonfils.html His birth name was Edgar Addison Walker and he changed it while at West Point to Frederick Walker Bonfils after his uncle, Frederick Gilmer Bonfils, who owned the Denver Post newspaper. For many years Fred was the business manager of the Post. His rank of major which was often included in his name was a temporary one of about 18 months in WWI and later in the Colorado National Guard.
