I stopped by to see the Emily Warner Museum today which is unfortunately closed for the season. Looking through the window, I noted Emily's Frontier uniform. The Emily Warner Field Aviation Museum opened in July 2015. Located in the former Rocky Mountain Airways airline terminal of Granby/Grand County Airport, the museum's displays, photographs and artifacts tell the fascinating stories of aviation history in Grand County. History-The airport building at 1023 County Road 610 in Granby was the original airline terminal for Rocky Mountain Airways (RMA). Built in 1973, it notably is modeled after the Vail Bell Tower. The RMA terminal was built by the Dell Webb Corporation which also developed the Innsbruck/Silver Creek Ski Area of Granby. Many historic artifacts and information about Emily Warner are on display. In 1976, Warner became America's first, female airline captain. She also developed Ouray Ranch on the Colorado River near Granby and lived in Grand County for over 25 years. Jan Modisette Brictson Emily was a true professional and gifted pilot. It was an honor to be a part of her flight crew. George Fay A true professional and a dear friend. R.I.P. (7/6/20) Dave Burnham Emily was a friend of mine, as she was to many. She was a Denver Homey. We grew up in the same town. She learned to fly at Skyranch. Me, too. We both worked for the old Frontier, and later together on the United Certificate for the FAA in Denver. Frontier Captain Dale Buss/FAA Inspector convinced her to come back to Denver, to work for the FAA. She often said Dale rescued her from a job flying 727s in the dark of night for UPS. Turns out Captain Dale convinced me to work for the FAA, too. Emily and I lived about a block apart in the same neighborhood. She was a modest and gentle person. She was a favorite speaker at parties/retirements. She always made other people feel special. Emily was special in every way, will be missed, but not forgotten. She was part of that generation that really flew airplanes. This woman flew Convair 580s into places most have never heard of in the Rockies. Autopilot INOP.. No problem. Now, she's flying West to join a lot of great airmen/women. I copied Captain Dale, another great aviator, because tonight we will reminisce, raise a glass, and bid Emily Godspeed! Christina Bonatti So sorry. She was great to fly with. I loved it when she flew a flight I was on. God bless her family and close friends Billy Walker As always GREAT JOB, Jake! Patty Hughes Smith On some of her first flights, Pax, Mostly men , would think it was one of us making the announcements ! Took a while for the transition ! Diff time! Coy Preece Had the pleasure of meeting her several times. R. I. P. Emily Howell Warner. Tom Morhouse Emily was a class ahead of me and from the first time I met her I respected her as an aviator and just a fine individual. It just so happened that my very last discussion with her was before my trip back to STL where I would call back and resign from FAL. I just could not support what was being forced down our throat and the ruination of some of the finest persons I have ever known. We had a long conversation and with a tear in my eye I boarded to STL, knowing I might not ever see her again. Years went by and later I and some of my other F-100 fighter pilots went to the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum near Dulles. The F-100 was being introduced as a new static display. It was a grand occasion but afterwards, I took time to go the Smithsonian to find Emily’s story there. I found it and what a great moment it was. I felt honored that I could remember this aviator I knew. She was a class act. (7/9/20) Cindy Bell I never met her but sure Remember her Rest In Peace. She was the Captain and was so enjoyable to talk to. Emily will be missed by many. Mynette McKamey Such a kind, smart, lovely woman and friend. Rest in sweet peace, Emily. Sylvia Rau I met her when I walked into the restroom once and she was at the sink in uniform. I just saw her from the back in a Captain’s uniform and I thought I had gone into the men’s room by mistake. I apologized profusely...Then she turned around and I had to apologize again for thinking she was a man! We laughed together...what a good sport! RIP, beautiful lady! Lindsey Moore I enjoyed working on as one of her FA crew a few times. A special lady. Captain Emily, you were a wonderful, classy lady, always calm and genuine, a respected team leader..it was a privilege to work as a flight attendant on your crew on many occasions. Darrell Anderson I was so excited during my Flight Attendant days when I open the cockpit door and there sat Captain Emily Hanrahan. My first flight with her, priceless! We had something in common being the first in our respective fields. Thank you Frontier Airlines for setting precedents. Thank you Emily for opening the door and nurturing female Pilots that came after you. God bless you Captain Emily and I know you will be missed by this Flight Attendant. My condolences to your family and friends. (7/12/20) Emily’s Celebration of Life was a grand send off for Emily at Wings over the Rockies , Air & Space Museum! FAL pilots in attendance were Bill Watkins, Dennis Lacy, Don Riebe, Maury Ryan, Dennis Kuntz, Bob Beaubout and Archie Van Beek. FAL/CAL flight attendants were, Robin Charovano, Jeanette Sciacca, Celeste Koontz, Ellen Quinn, Gloria Lacy & Bonnie Dahl. Also Nancy Meshko & Son Jay were there. Nancy is wife of late FAL pilot George Meshko. She is 95 years old, always busy, but keeping quarantined, except for this occasion. -Bonnie Dahl (7/17/20) Gary Winn Emily was my F/O - DEN-LAX-OKC (about 1978). It was her first or near first on the 737.....because the DEN TV station, came on board. I let them film her during the start and before push-back. When we arrived at LAX....they interviewed me...'what's it like to fly with a female'...type of questions. When we got to OKC for the overnight, she had to hurry to the hotel for a telephone interview. Years later, Emily gave me a copy of that film that the DEN TV made.....I even had hair back then ......LOL. Years later (about 2004)....I was with students for Sim training at DEN and walking down the hall looking for our Sim, when I heard Emily from behind, "Hi Gary".... Emily was with the FAA then.....we hugged and reminisced that past event years ago.....She was a 'one and only' great gal!! (7/24/20) John Heimburger The (DEN) “D” concourse was where Chris and I met Emily Howell when we were returning from a trip to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in D.C. We told her about the bright red hairpiece we saw on her FAL mannequin in the Hall of Fame! She just laughed and said, “Well if it makes me any prettier, that’s OK with me!” But that was just ‘Emily!’ (7/25/20) Lance Ross I'm honored that Jake Lamkins has chosen to include my extensive 20th anniversary interview of Emily in her FLamily archives. At the time, I was editor of the former Stapleton InnerLine newspaper. When she and I set up the interview, I was stunned that no other Denver or aviation media had contacted her that month. Their loss. The interview is archived at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Emily_Howell_WarnerArt1993Jan.pdf . When I made the move from aviation reporter to airline corporate communications in the mid-90s, she teased me that she was losing her personal PR person. Emily will always be one of my favorite people, and she will always be one of my heroes. (7/31/20)
