ED SHERMAN 1965 - 1979 GROUND SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR DEN Frank Meyer was very special as were the other ground-school instructors who spoon-fed a bunch of malcontent pilots aeronautical knowledge so that we could ply our craft. George Arwood, Ted VanSteenberg, Rex Myers, and Ed Sherman, along with Frank, made a HUGE difference to us individually and as a group. Frontier's enviable safety record is testament to their abilities. -Billy Walker (4/26/13) Email to Ron Gallop: Thanks for the call today and your help on the Frank Meyer project. You mentioned Ed Sherman had died but I don't have any info on it. Do you have any details so I can start him a memorial webpage. My file says he left FL in 1979 with Rex Myers to work for a start-up carrier in Idaho. No photos or any other info. -Jake Lamkins (7/22/14) In March of 2002 Carolyn and I visited Las Vegas. We attended a convention hosted by Louis Rukeyser. I called Ed and arranged a meeting. I was looking forward to seeing my old friend. We had last been together at Golden Gate Airlines (in Monterey, CA) back in 1981. Unfortunately, subsequent calls to his house went unanswered and we left Las Vegas without meeting. I later learned his service was out of order. Ed and I worked side by side at the greatest airline ever. When Ed O'Neil died, his promise of a seniority number for us at FAL died with him. Dick Orr said "Pilots are a dime a dozen. Ground school instructors are hard to find." Ed and I knew then that our future as professional pilots lay elsewhere. When Ed and I left Denver for Boise, Idaho and Gem State Airlines it began an odyssey that took us to many cities (and airlines) in our quest to achieve our dream. I don't know how many flying jobs Ed had before joining America West, but for me, the number is thirteen. Thirteen airlines that each went bust taking my hopes and dreams with them. Number fourteen was UPS and, as you know, I finally achieved the career I was looking for. I enjoyed it immensely until retiring in 2007. -Rex Myers (7/23/14) One of the biggest reasons Frontier enjoyed it's tremendous safety record was the training we received. None of the training before or after compares. The core of that training came from folks such as yourself, Ed and, of course, Frank. George and Van as well, albeit Van was more of a nuts and bolts type. Man, would I love to turn the clock back. Ed O'Neil's abilities, his character, and caring values would not be seen again once he was gone from our midst. Had he remained, no doubt you, Ed, and Frank would have had an opportunity to fly the line. Orr was right about one thing. "Pilots are a dime a dozen and ground school instructors are hard to find." Especially, FAL GS Instructors! Just the other day I was laughing with Jim Appleby about you using your tie to graphically show us how Beta Follow-Up in the Aeroproducts prop worked. I can picture you dragging yourself across the front of the class with that tie. We got the picture! Amazing really! -Billy Walker (7/23/14) Thanks for everyone's help. Attached is the only item I have in my files about Ed. It's from the Mar 1976 FL News. Was his name Edward, Edgar or ? Was that his first name or middle name? What was his wife's name? Was LAS his last residence as far as we know? What state was he from - the social security death index lists states where the SSN was issue. Any of the above info will help verify if he has flown west. The problem now is that there are so many Ed Shermans when one does an internet search. -Jake Lamkins (7/23/14) I was looking at the photo of Ed and it brought back a lot of memories. Ed had a rubber stamp he would put on memos and notes. It was from the cartoon Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The stamp featured a pensive Sherman with a shy smile and said "Sherman" at the bottom. He never explained it but I got the connection he felt with the character who was always exploring and learning new things. Ed and I talked a lot about getting that seniority number and just flying the line - no other responsibilities. When we made the decision to risk losing the security of the FAL family to go to Gem State Airlines and discuss their offer. We had concluded that it was the only way to keep the dream alive. Dressed in our finest shirt, pants and ties, we parked our cars in the hangar lot at DEN, walked through the hangar to the "back door" and stood on the ramp waiting for the bus to take us to the terminal. The area is directly under the giant lighted sign on the hangar displaying the Frontier logo and name. We were discussing our chances on both getting jump seats on the next flight to Boise, when suddenly pigeon shit slopped all over Ed's face and shirt. Ed was talking at the time and in the middle of his sentence he ask "is that what I think it is?" My response was to look up at the sign where the pigeons were roosting with my mouth agape. Ed looked at me and said "you're even dumber than me. At least I know not to look up - and open my mouth!" Still in shock at what had just happened, I looked at him and said "This had better not be on omen on our career choices. I'll never know if it was or not but Gem State folded three months after we got there. Every time Ed and I got together after that, he would remind me to keep my mouth shut when I look up. I don't know if you are aware Ed was of Polish descent. Ed was his middle name. His first name was Carol. One 'r' and one 'l' make it a masculine name in Polish. He was very sensitive and confided in very few people about his actual first name. I still miss him. He was a true friend. -Rex Myers (7/24/14) Ed Sherman left FAL to go to Sierra Pacific. I heard he has passed. I have this one photo. -Ron Gallop (8/7/14) I have one photo of Ed and used to see him some at AWA. He left AWA and was running a DHC-7 program in conjunction with the Williams to Grand Canyon railway. That was out of Chandler Memorial which is now closed (owned by the Tohono Akimel Oohadam "Pima" tribe). The "airline" never really got going. I later heard he had some health issues then passed... -Billy Walker (8/7/14) Thanks for the help. I still cannot pin down his death. -Jake Lamkins (8/7/14) I hired on as a ships cleaner in mid 1965. I was going to A & P school at the time hoping to be promoted to mechanic. That happened in the Fall of '66. In 1974 Captain Ed O'Neal hired me back as an instructor in pilot training. He promised me (and other instructors) a seniority number if I would do a good job for one year. As you know, he died of cancer 6 months later, and Dick Orr refused to honor it. I and Ed Sherman left Frontier in May of '79 to fly for a start up airline in Idaho. -Rex Myers (8/7/14) He is not in the Feb 1960 FL Roster. ED SHERMAN DEN DG operations - training No title per the Jan 1970 and Jul 1970 FL Telephone Directories. ED SHERMAN DEN DT flight ops - training No title per the Nov 1977 and Nov 1978 FL Quick Reference Directories. He is not in the Dec 1979 QRD. -Jake Lamkins (8/8/14) Ed Sherman I've searched the Legacy records on-line and am unable to find anything about Ed Sherman. Perhaps, you can succeed with your handy-dandy locator? He's been "Gone West" for a long time now. Hopefully, Rex will have some insight. I have a GREAT Rex & Ed story somewhere. I will try to dig that outta the archives and share it. As I recall it was a shitty story... -Billy Walker (10/31/16) Hi Billy, Rex and John: I recall our 2014 emails about Ed and at that time I was unable to find confirmation of his death with an internet search. I will check again and put together a memorial webpage for him. -Jake Lamkins (10/31/16) Nothing new found during a web search. Still do not know when he started with Frontier or his full name or important dates like birth, death, etc. He is not on the 1960 roster but he is in the 1970 telephone directory so I will show his start time at Frontier as 1965 until more info is received. -Jake Lamkins (11/5/16) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Ed Sherman DEN ground school instructor Ed Sherman's memorial webpage has been posted: http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ed_Sherman.html Have very little info on Ed so please post anything you have. Need an obituary and time he started at Frontier. -Jake Lamkins (11/5/16) Ed Sherman https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JG59-KP The above link will provide some info on Carroll Edward Sherman. -Ron Gallop (1/17/17) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Ed Sherman DEN ground school instructor Ed Sherman's memorial webpage has been updated at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ed_Sherman.html Ron Gallop sent a weblink to his SSDI which cleared up the spelling of his name and the dates of birth and death.
