ED HUSS 1958 - 1986 AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, INSPECTOR, LEAD MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN DEN How do I join the ExFAL Club? Ed Huss--Id 3837 (4/10/05) Hi Ed, Where did you work at FL and what position? I may have met you over the years. -Jake Lamkins, Station agent 1964-86 (4/10/05) Hi Jake, I worked 26 yrs in Maintenance and was lead NDT (Non Destructive Testing) Tech. I was the mole in the basement. Retired just before FL Closed. Got a job teaching sheet metal with Colo. Aero Tech and later to United Airlines as a World Wide NDT lead instructor for 10 years. I retired at 74 and now am 79. I don't think we have met but maybe. The day I left FL, I walked out of the building and across the RR Tracks and took a picture of the front. I will try to scan it and send to you. I don't have the negative. You could caption it "The best people in the world passed through these doors." -Ed Huss (4/14/05) Posted at the FL Club: Hi Leo, Long time no see. This is the first time I had seen this ETOP's daffynition. Pretty good. I trust all is well with you and that you are surviving in good health. I am retired now, living in Denver and waiting to see what United is going to do with our retirement checks. UGH! Oh well, it's only money. Best wishes, -Ed Huss (6/5/05) Posted at the FL Club: Regret I can't attend Al' Olingers service. Will be having an operation at that time. I believe we all loved Al. He was a great guy, and I wish him peace and happiness in his new home -Ed Huss (8/2/05) Posted at the FL Club: Thanks for your comments, Ed. And good luck with your operation and a speedy, complete recuperation. -Jake Lamkins (8/2/05) Posted at the FL Club: Re: Zick's Boomerang. I was working FL Paint shop at the time. We made a pounce pattern (a series of pin holes along the outline of the logo. After locating and masking the pattern on the tail of the airplane we could pounce blue chalk, which was contained in a Bull Durham bag, through the holes, then remove the paper pattern and mask and paint the logo. Because of the weight of the gold colored additive the paint would run and leave a black or, at the very least, a dark line. So, it took a bit of experience to do it right. Since I was the tallest and could reach the top I did most of them. Later, when more changes to paint and interior decor was being contracted I met and worked with the contracted artistes who did the interiors. They were fantasticly fast and accurate and it was a pleasure to work with them. Well, Zick was Zick and we will miss him as all the rest. Do you have a list of those of us that are still here?...I am 80+ now. -Ed Huss (1/16/07) Hi Ed, I don't think there is a definitive list of remaining FLolks. Certainly, the time is coming when there will be fewer of us left than have gone west. Wells Fargo still has 1100 on their list of FLolks with ESOP money coming from the lawsuit. I have about 1200 on my email list, counting dupes and invalids. The DEN Reunion mailing list is probably the largest and I have about a 1000 addresses in my FL newsletter data base. As for your 80+ years, you keep hanging in there and remember what Will Rogers said on page 15 of the last FL NEWS: "Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it." -Jake Lamkins (1/16/07) Posted at the FL Club: Does anyone have an idea of how many of us are left? I am now 80 + 5 months! -Ed Huss (4/20/07) One thing that aging has taught me is that every day is a victory and I'm thankful for the gift. So, you're to be congratulated on your 80+ years. As to your question about our numbers, there's no way to tell. Over 400 FLolks came to the DEN Reunion last year. Wells Fargo can't find 1300 of us for the ESOP settlement. The DEN Reunion committee has about 2000 on their mailing list. A few more than 400 are subscribing to the FL newsletter. Yesterday, I had a letter from pilot George Ceshker re-newing his subscription. George is now 91 years old - another 90 year+ pilot is Bob Lambourne whom I hear from often. At the least, all the FLolks are middle-aged since it's 21 years since the bankruptcy and if one was as young as 25 then, they would be a minimum of 46 years old now. Myself, I'm gonna hit 65 in September. I'm glad to be here - I'm glad to be anywhere! HA! -Jake Lamkins (4/20/07) Thanks Jake, Well, I do believe it was the smell of those DC-3s in old hanger 6 that have kept us going all these years. Yup, every day is a present no matter how we may feel. PS--You're just a kid yet! -Ed Huss (4/21/07) Posted at the FL Club after two deaths reported: Gosh Jake, all our friends are leaving us and I suspect my time is not to far away--Sure makes one wonder. -Ed Huss (6/25/07) Yep, Mother Nature sure is wasteful. Letting us ol' codgers full of knowledge and wisdom fall by the wayside. -Jake Lamkins (6/25/07) Posted at the FL Club: Yup, we're all gettin older. I'm 81, not in the best of shape or the worst. Most of the old gang is gone and why I'm here is beyond me. Airplanes fly themselves, so don't fall asleep with your hands on the wheel 'cause when you wake up you might find the moon has moved from the left to the right side of the cockpit. -Ed Huss (9/4/07) Posted at the FL Club: It would be interesting to know how many of the Old FL maintenance folks are left. -Ed Huss (3/4/08) Hi Ed, I'm still here. That is a good question. I would like to know also. -Edward D. Schroeder (3/4/08) Hello, Ed Huss, I'm still here, too. -Clarence Yoder (3/4/08) Well I am still around, and would like to hear from some of the old GSE maintenance group. e-mail me at COLOKERN@AOL. COM -Pat Kern (3/4/08) You guys rock. I remember the CDR maint. crew. Great bunch all around. Doing the RON on the Twin Otter. -Ron Abfalter (3/5/10) Maybe you'll get a kick out of this. One time I was working line and was in the process of servicing a Convair. Every thing was running late and we all were doing our best to get the airplane out on time. The wind was blowing pretty good and I had just opened the access to the potty dump hose attach. I caught the full contents, except for the Kotex that held the potty flush valve open, in the face, which gives credence to the addage "If you ever get hit with a bucket of ---- be sure to close your eyes. All I can say about that one is : How stupid can one get? Yup, Stapleton is no more except for the tower and I too have shed a few tears for those wonderful memories. Like the snow blowing through the hanger and iced up doors and DC-3s all over the place. I am going on 82 now and there's not many of the old gang left but, if we're lucky and have been good boys and girls we may meet again. Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter -Ed Huss (3/21/08) Posted at the FL Club to leo Schuster: Hi Leo, Thanks for the info. If I ever get on top again I sure would like to play a bit of golf. Sounds like a jolly time. Actually I am not too bad off. Much better than 6 mos ago and am up and about daily. Arthurs I Tis in hands is a nuisance but manageable thus far. Heart problems have cleared up and I was 82 June 9th. Best wishes -Ed Huss (6/24/08) Posted at the FL Club: Jake and all, Happy New Year to You too! -Ed Huss (1/10/09) Don Cecil phoned to tell me Ed's obituary was in today's DEN Post. May I borrow-- I'm trying to design a memorial card and have found a plane for it but the wording is what I'm asking about. You have on your web site "Gone West But Not Forgotten!!!" may I use that quote for the card? Thanks, -Anna Huss-Whitecrane (3/29/10) Hi Anna, Feel free to use anything you find on the website. The only photo I have of Ed is the one on the obituary. Send any you like and I'll include them. I've already put out the word about his memorial to the online club. Unfortunately the newsletter is at the printers and the next one isn't due out til July. Ed will have an article in that issue. Take a look at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ed_Huss.html to see what I have thus far. Inspector seniority date of 11/20/64 on the 11/1/76 FL/IAM seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (3/29/10) I joined FAL in July of 1963 as a Telephone Reservationist in the Consolidated Reservations Office upstairs in Hanger 5 at Stapleton Airport. Being many years older than my contemporaries in this office, I took the vast majority of my breaks in the System Dispatchers Office & Pilot Crew Room which was then located just down the hall. Somehow I also managed to meet a few real stellar individuals who were Technicians in our Fleet Aircraft Maintenance Department on the ground floor of this building. One of the very first technicians I met was Ed Huss who shared shop space with a real grand fellow ( Matt ???? ) who was our Airline's Upholsterer. Not only being brand new to both FAL and the entire Airline industry, but to Denver & Colorado as well, meant I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated these two new friends. By knowing them, I became acutely aware of an extremely vital part of the Airline Industry ( Airline Fleet Maintenance) which the general public is blissfully unaware even exists. God Speed, Ed Huss, grand Friend. -Bob Pearson (10/20/10)
