DUANE COOK 1966 - 1986 PILOT GSW DAL DFW DEN Blown Tires If this incident is the same as the one I remember, Duane Cook was the Captain and Jim Rimer was the F/O. Actually, it wasn't a case of blown tires, it was a case of maintanence management going cheep and buyin lousy re-treads. The treads left the airplane and Duane and Jim ended up landing on the rims on the #2 side as I recall. They did a superb job. Sadly, Both Duane and Jim have lined up on Runway 27 for their flight West. Jim many years ago from a heart attack and Duane a couple of years ago. Duane Had gone to CO after the UAL - FAL debacle. Jim had a son that was a F-16 pilot now with United. Another son was with America West in a non-flying capacity some time back (I don't know where he went though) and a third son was a Navy pilot (as I recall). All three were GREAT kids. If you knew Jim Rimer, that wouldn't surprise you. -Billy Walker (1/31/99) The blown tire incident occurred August 5, 1982 at DEN. Flight 194 to Atlanta with 97 passengers and 5 crew members blew both left main tires on take-off. Duane was Captain and Jim FO - both were 58 years old. They burned off some fuel and came back in so smoothly that 95 of the passengers boarded the next flight out. Super job by both pilots. It was a new aircraft that Frontier had received 6 weeks before. Info from DENVER POST, 8/6/82 courtesy of Ken Schultz (The newspaper must be wrong about the ages because the SSDI lists both born in 1934 so they would have been 48) -Jake Lamkins (10/4/99) I didn't visit Duane Jake, I called him at the hospital.  He sounded happy to hear from me but I don't recall what day it was.  He died within a few days of my call, but I'm glad that I got to speak to him. As for Jim Rimer...... don't know the cause, but Jim was a good man. Flew S/O when I was F/O on B-737.  -Clyde Hart (10/5/99) Duane died 5/10/94 per the FARPA Newsletter -Jake Lamkins (5/12/03) E-mail to pilots: I was trying to find Duane in the SSDI but couldn't. I did find this: ERNEST D COOK 30 Nov 1934 10 May 1994 Age 59 At 76021 (Bedford, Tarrant, TX) SSN issued in South Carolina Is this Duane? Did he live in the DFW area. Was he from SC? -Jake Lamkins (5/13/03) Bingo, you got him. -Frosty Frost (5/13/03) Sounds like Duane. He lived in the Dallas/Ft Worth area for many years. I really don't remember whether he was from SC or from OK. He flew copilot for me on many trips out of DFW so I got to know him pretty well. A real nice guy. Later on as a Captain, he had some sort of emergency coming into Stapleton... did a real fine job and was commended by the 'upstairs people' of FAL. -Ace Avakian (5/14/03) Hi Jake Yes, this was Ernest D. Cook. He was from SC, and was with Central, Fal, and based at FTW, Den, and DFW. I gave him his Initial and Up Grades on various equiptment. His Widow is in AZ, and has attended a Reunion here at DFW. -Bill Blackmon (5/23/03) Ernest D. Cook - Deceased, wife = Carol 1391 Laree Avenue Clarksdale AZ 86324 -ESOP List (5/27/03) My husband, Ron Smith, died before he retired from mandatory FL & FAA retirement at age 60. His best friend, Duane Cook also died at age 59, months away from his retirement-that was so bizarre. -Joy Alley-Smith (10/14/06) Our son, Michael Neff just uploaded our copy of Frontier's 1982 - B737 Emergency Landing (flight 190) in Denver on his u-tube website below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0SMHMpBYfA&feature=youtube_gdata_player -Carol and Bill Neff (1/27/11) Link posted at Facebook and FL Club: There's some great FL history at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0SMHMpBYfA&feature=youtube_gdata_player from August 5, 1982. Thanks to Michael Neff, son of Carol & Bill Neff (FL FA & pilot) for posting it. Co-pilot Jim Rimer died next year on Nov 28, 1983, age 49, of a heart attack. Captain Duane Cook died May 10, 1994 at age 59 -Jake Lamkins (1/28/11) Facebook: There's some great FL history at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0SMHMpBYfA&feature=youtube_gdata_player from August 5, 1982. I believe the agent doing forms for the flight was Barry MacCloud. The plane was like 4 pounds from max ATOG on a hot DEN summer day. Several of us re-checked to make sure everything was correct before they were impounded by the NTSB. When the plane flew over the hangar we were all out checking to see gear. No rubber. It was thought that one of the new Brigestones blew off the rim with so much pressure that it blew the other one off the rim. Always liked Duane Cook. He was a regular through LNK as well. -Mike White (1/29/11) E D COOK Pilot seniority date of 4/11/66 on the 9/1/85 FL/ALPA Seniority List. He is not on the 9/1/86 list. Billy says he left for CO after the FL/UA fiasco in 1986. -Jake Lamkins (2/17/11) What about a pilot by the name of Duane Cook? I used to fly with him alot on the 580 making our 15 landings a day... He was such a good man! -Jolie Haas Larder (1/7/13) I flew co-pilot for Captain Cook too - in Newark - great, great guy! Duane had a co-pilot - gal from People Express I believe it was - can't recall her name - icy night in Hartford Conn. - slid into snow bank after attempted aborted landing - think that may have brought on his early departure. -Jean Smith Thompson (1/7/13) Flew as FO with Cookie on his first 737 Captain trip after IOE. It was the "Night Hawk" from DEN to DFW. Duane must have smoked two packs of cigs on the 1+30 flight. Flew with him quite a bit at FAL. -Ed Woodson (1/7/13) Oh, sad...Yep that's him. I had so much fun flying with him;-( -Jolie Haas Larder (1/7/13) Duane Cook was the Capt. on the (early 80's) 737 ATL flight that turned back with the main gear tires blown, dumped fuel and landed perfectly at DEN, right down the center line. I have the whole news story on VHS... I swear it is like watching an "edge of your seat" movie, with the news station's cameras rolling, waiting for a "50/50 chance of disaster!" He was so cool during the TV interviews afterwards! -Vicky Veldboon (8/18/13) You can view the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0SMHMpBYfA -Jake Lamkins (8/18/13) Duane was a good guy to fly with! -Steve Tidler (3/18/19) FLacebook Terry Thompson It was fun to see the little snippet of Captain Duane Cook. I flew a month of ski shuttles from Houston to Gunnison with Duane. While shooting the approach in the weather at Gunnison I asked Duane if flying in the mountains made him nervous. He said "Yes, why do you ask?" I said "Because you're smoking two cigarettes at once, Duane." (2/24/21) Irene Fairweather I remember Duane as a very kind, sweet man. One of the best. (2/25/21)
