DON JORGENSEN 1955 - 1974 STATION AGENT, STATION MANAGER INW CDR LMM LAR JAC D.E. Jorgensen Date of hire 11-12-55 Per the FL Seniority List dated March 1, 1962 Don was the JAC manager the three summers I worked there. He called me in that first summer in 1970 when I got there. He said I want you to be my senior agent and that's the way it was all three summers I worked there. He never questioned a decision I made but always backed me up. He was easy to work for, a devout Mormon and Korean War veteran. He had his guts blown out in Korea and lost about half of them. He ate constantly but was very slim - he told me about Korea and how he had to eat a lot because of his shortened intestinal tract. -Jake Lamkins (8/13/04) I sent a FL NEWS to him. -Jake Lamkins (8/14/04) Don E. Jorgensen Brief History Started with FL in 1955. When I was in INW, FL 10 was enroute from INW to PHX, via FLG and PRC. When leaving PRC, the plane encountered a heavy line of thunderstorms. As there was no radar those days the plane just tried to go around the storm. In doing so, he got caught in a servere down draft, which pulled him down into a narrow canyon. It become so narrow the plane's right wing tip caught the side of the canyon, and tore off 12 feet of the wing, and took of the belly antenna. However, the plane was able to pick itself up and go on to PHX with no one injured. It goes to show one just how versatile the old DC-3 was. This was in the late summer of 1956. Since the days of FL, I have been with the Uintah School District, in the Transportation department. -Don Jorgensen, Randlett UT (8/20/04) Don Jorgensen HC 69 Box 176 Randlett, UT 84063 Don E. - Dora J. I am continually amazed at the numerous tid bits of information you come up with, and is very interesting to see the history of all the perons I knew during the 20 plus years I worked there. I read all this, and a thought keeps running in my mind, is this really the JAKE LAMKINS, I knew up in JAC. Keep up the good work -Don Jorgensen (1/19/07) Great hearing from you. Thanks for the kind words. I'm really glad you enjoy the newsletter. Yep, I'm the same Jake that worked with you in JAC the summers of 1970-72. It doesn't seem like it could be 35 years ago, does it? -Jake Lamkins (1/20/07) Don Jorgenson, CDR Mgr Per Aug 15, 1963 sales & service personnel roster. When he did that I was able to get into Laramie Don Jorgensen was the manager. Don used to give me hell because before the evening flight from DEN CYS I would chase the antelope off the airport near the runway. I would always send a note to DEN Dispatch that I was going to be out doing that. We had one of those F Drop phones for ATC. I got fed up with Don's riding me about my chasing the Antelope. I put my bid in and moved back to Cheyenne. About a month later 522 while landing in LAR hit an antelope, the prop was hanging so far forward looked like it would fall off. I was a horse's ass and sent Don a tty copied in DENDD and told him about how important my chasing the antelope was. I also offered to drive over from Cheyenne and help with the mess he had going on. FREE Flight service had also been grumbling about my going out to chase the antelope off the runway,. I went out and saw the Chief at FSS after the incident. Let him know had someone got hurt or killed I was going to push for him to lose his job. There was a lot of fence repair done on airport boundary. That evening flight was often a 1 man operation I had a motorcycle that I rode to work and chased the antelope with. -Roger Greenlee (6/5/16) Don Jorgensen I told you about how Don Jorgenson really got under my skin about chasing the antelope off the runway. Don was in the 1950 Korean Conflict He told me once that after he seen how Americans were treated when they were captured and the holes they were put in that he made up his mind he would never be captured. He did get captured and the truck he was on stopped so every one include the guards could relieve themselves. Him and a couple of others took off. He said he dropped down and crawled into a bush. The enemy kept walking by him and he said his foot was sticking out where it could be seen but he was afraid to move it because the movement would attract attention. He did escape. I think he told me he was hit by shrapnel. He once was leading a squad along the 38th parallel, a stream. He saw the North Koreans setting up a machine gun nest just on the other side. He took his squad across the stream and they killed all of the North Koreans, dragged the machine gun into the stream. Later his commander found out about it. Gave him hell for going over and hell for not dragging the bodies into the stream as well. For his service Don is one of my heroes. -Roger Greenlee (5/30/17) Thanks for sharing the story about Don. I always got along okay with Don the three summers I worked for him in JAC 1970-72. I once commented to him about how he seemed to be eating all the time. He told me he had a shortened gut due to a wound in Korea. He related how he saw his guts on the ground before he passed out. Heroes are all around us if we take the time to notice. -Jake Lamkins (5/30/17) I found Don's obituary while doing a periodic web search for Frontier deaths Looks like he left FL in 1974 when he left JAC and returned to Utah. -Jake Lamkins (4/4/19) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Don Jorgensen I just found out my 1970-1972 JAC station manager Don Jorgensen flew west two years ago: https://www.hullingermortuary.com/notices/Don-Jorgensen I enjoyed working for Don my three summers in JAC - 1970, 71, 72. He was a straight shooter and an unsung hero. Few people knew he was blown up in the Korean War. I asked him once how he ate so much and stayed slim. He quietly told me how he was badly wounded in Korea and the last thing he saw before he passed out was his guts lying in the dirt in front of him. Subsequent treatment removed about half his intestines so he had to eat often but small portions. -Jake Lamkins (4/5/19) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Don Jorgensen CDR LAR JAC station manager Don Jorgensen's memorial webpage is posted at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Don_Jorgensen.html Post your remembrances of Don. -Jake Lamkins (4/13/19)
