DENNY MEYER 1978 - 1978 PILOT DEN DHC-6 accident at PUB The "Otter" captain was Jack Howell, the f/o was Denny Meyers, a new-hire. Dale Glenn was observing as he was going to check out as a DHC-6 instructor pilot. Ironically, Dale was a very high-time Otter pilot as was Denny Meyers. I used to fly with Dale a lot in the Otter, but Jack was relatively inexperienced in that aircraft. The aircraft was not on a go-around. They had just completed the training event for Meyers and were going to demonstrate a STOL takeoff. The factory recommended use of 20 degrees of flaps while we (improperly) used flaps 40 and "chased" VMC (single engine control speed)which was 65 knots. However, if you used flaps 40, set the power and released the brakes and rotated the aircraft would un-stick very quickly and feel very much like it was rising vertically. Then it would "plane out" at 2-300 feet and you would have to unload the elevators to maintain 65 knots for VMC. There is no way to prove conclusively what happened, but I feel that the accident was exacerbated by a thin layer of ice that was present on the wings and that someone made a pitch moment change AFTER the elevators were initially unloaded. The results was a whip stall at too low an altitude for any possible recovery. I participated in the investigation and possess the photographs of the accident. I flew that aircraft for several years and feel qualified to make an assessment. I hasten to add that no one will ever know for sure on this one. -Billy Walker (1/23/99) Jack Howell, Denny Meyers, and Dale Glenn Died January 18, 1978, Pueblo, CO. -Ken Schultz (4/24/99) The FARPA newsletter shows Dennis Myers date of death as 1/18/78. Unable to locate records for Meyers or Myers in SSDI. -Jake Lamkins (12/3/02) I will go thru my list and give you and Ace the names and dates of those I have in case someone else is missed... Since I am sure anyone hired before 1968, I will start with Jim Rimer hired 4-29-68 and died from a heart attack on 11-28-83. Dale Glenn 5-3-73 10-3-73, 10-12-42 1-18-78 (DHC6 PUB) John Deahl 7-1-74 12-9-74 12-21-44 4-9-81 (P38 crash) Denny Meyer 1-3-78 1-3-78 12-7-43 1-18-78 (DHC6 PUB) D.E. Klock 5-1-78 5-1-78 10-30-45 2-28-79 I am not sure when this list was constructed, but I would think in 1986. So, unfortunately, there have been other "Gone West's" since. Hope this is helpful. Blue Skies & Tailwinds... -Billy Walker (9/12/03) DENNIS MEYER Born 07 Dec 1943 Died Jan 1978 Age 34 SSN issued in Missouri -SSDI (2/6/05) I received a note from Frank Meyer telling me that Dennis Meyer is the one that was killed along with Jack Howell and Dale Glenn in the twin Otter crash in Pueblo. He also told me that Dale Glenn's uncle is John Glenn, the astronaut and Senator from Ohio. -Ace Avakian (2/7/05) It was Denny who was in the right seat of the Twin Otter crash at PUB. Jack Howell was the captain and Dale Glenn was observing as part of his check-out to be a training captain. I have my own theory on that accident. I was, I believe, one of the high time FAL DHC-6 captains with over 4000 hours in it. I recall the spelling for Denny Meyer is MEYER. I have an ex-brother-in-law with that spelling and recalled asking if they were related. I participated in the accident investigation. Bob Beabout was there as well. -Billy Walker (2/7/05) Posted at FLacebook and the FL Club: DEN pilot Denny Meyer's memorial webpage has been updated. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Denny_Meyer.html Still need a photo and obituary for Denny. He had been a FL pilot for 15 days when he died. -Jake Lamkins (10/4/12)
