DARREL BEHREND 1947 - 1950 STEWARD, CHIEF STEWARD DEN On a long shot whim, I punched "Monarch Air Lines" into my computer and there it was!! I'm new with this computer business so was not sure if anything would come up. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jack Weiss and I was one of the original three flight stewards hired by Monarch Air Lines. In fact, I was privileged to be in the crew that carried the passenger holding ticket No. 1. She was a young lady from Aurora. (I have a photo of that). I'm very interested in who you are and your interest in MAL history. I do have several photos of the early MAL era. I have a photo of "Pappy" Wilson, Hal Darr and Frank D. Miller with our inaugural plane. Also one of the flight crews where we met at our transfer point in Durango (when we first opened up all three segments). My years with Monarch will always be a highlight in my life. Wonderful people - we weren't just employees, we were definitely "family". I'll be anxious to hear from you! Sincerely, -Jack Weiss (9/19/99) Yes - I remember him. 'Matter of fact, George Graham and I were talking about some of the Stewards we had with Monarch Air Lines. Let's see...I believe Jack Weiss was also in the Naval Reserve out at Buckley Field here in Denver. I believe he was a Store-Keeper. Then there was Jack Brown, who lives here in Castle Rock; Frank Duff (who is a 'Gone West"); Vern Carlson, who I think was the first Steward then later on became a Vice Pres of something within the airline; then there was Glen Gettman (Gone West) who also was a steward and then later hired as copilot and eventually made Captain. Mentioning Glen Gettman reminds me of a time when there was an Airline Stewardess beauty contest. Since we (at Monarch) didn't have females but had Stewards instead - we entered Glen in the Contest. We fixed his hair up with a wig, put make up on him, short skirt, lipstick, etc and entered him as 'Glena Gettman" and lo and behold...he was in the running!!!! Bob Serling, the former UPI reporter and author of many aviation books (The President's Plane Is Missing', "The Left Seat", etc., etc.), remembers that 'contest' very well. When I talked to him last and asked if he would write the FOREWORD for my book, he said he would, "...only if..." I mention that 'beauty contest' in my book. If I really sit down and concentrate, I think I can come up with some more names of our Stewards. I've been told I have an uncanny memory which maybe I do and maybe I don't but if you check in with Weiss again - ask if I have him pegged right as far as being in the Navy Reserve at Buckley, etc. Best Wishes -Ace Avakian (9/19/99) Hello, allow me to introduce myself. The name is Darrel and I'm a very good friend of Jack who you have been chatting with re: Monarch Airlines. Well needless to say we all have a lot in common with this subject. I worked with Jack in the late forty's, for about 3 years. I started as a flight steward under Richard White who was the chief. I eventually became the chief steward until Monarch merged with Challenger Airlines, that's when Jack and I left for Calif. There has been a lot of water under the bridge in almost 50 years that's for sure. Jack told me you worked laterpossibly with Frontier. In any event it's great to know someone from the airlines and I would be interested to chat with you.My address is DDarrelb@aol.com - Take care. -Darrel Behrend (9/20/99) Nice to get your reply. Yes, I certainly do remember 'ol Ace Avakian and be sure and give him my best even tho he might not remember me,it's been quite a while to say the least.Jack and I were indeed @ Buckley during that period in time. I flew with Ev Aden when he was Chief Pilot, also with Johnny Myers, Dallas Taylor, Art Ashworth and many more. Jack & I left for Calif. when Frontier became of age. When did you come on the scene? Will be looking forward to more info from you. Oh yes, my last name is: Behrend. So long for now. -Darrel Behrend (9/21/99) I just found your old eddress and wanted to see if you were still using it. -Jake Lamkins Frontier Airlines (2/6/06) DARREL W BEHREND 81 ARTESIA CA DARREL W BEHREND 81 CERRITOS CA DARREL W BEHREND 81 YORBA LINDA CA -US Search (2/6/06) Darrel W.
