He was from Iowa.

I had heard a rumor that Dan Smith had died.
You're the first to pin it down so I can include him in our records.
Do you have any more info on his death?

Not really, the word came around on our telephone grapevine while we were all still in shock and propping each other up. 
It was quick, he didn't end up in a hospital for ages. 
He was riding with another biker, I think somewhere on the western slope. 
Some of the guys were trying to get together pics of him for his folks and knew I had been taking these. 
Unfortunately I only found that one of Smitty.

Remember our friend, 'Smitty'
A memorial fund has been created for Dan Smith, Frontier Airlines station agent at Denver,
who was killed in a motorcycle accident September 2.
'Smitty', as his friends and coworkers called him, was on his motorcycle heading for a family cabin near Gunnison 
when his bike skidded on a sharp curve hitting an oncoming truck. 
The turn was hidden by walls of rock alongside the road.
Smitty, like all Frontier employees. lost his medical and life insurance when the airline filed for bankruptcy. 
His family must face the last medical, ambulance and other expenses without the usual help.
The Frontier credit union, which is still operating, started the fund with a $100 donation and other donations 
have been coming in from Frontier friends as well as colleagues from other airlines.
ALEA's International office has forwarded a donation and members and airline employees who wish to donate should send their check to:

Not in SSDI - he may not have had enough credits to qualify.

During my days as a senior station agent in DEN
I often had Dan on my ramp crew and he was a welcome sight.
That meant I idn't worry about his part of the operation
because he was dependable, hard-working and did more than his share.

The pic you asked about on 29JUL: 
two agents at the rear pit of a 737, it is Smitty and Lowell. 
When the guys came to ask me for pics of Smitty to give his family, 
this was the only one I could find. It is one of my ramp pics.
