CARL WILLMANN 1947 - 1988 AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, LEAD AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, FOREMAN-LINE SERVICE, ENGINEER, MANAGER-PROJECT ENGINEERING DEN Info on Carl Willmann: DOB 6-23-24, hire date 2-17-47, last day sometime in 1988, prior to 12-15-88 roster date, years of service aprox. 41 1/2 years. Jobs: Foremen Line Service Manager Project Engineering -Cal Reese (6/22/01) I had no clue that an FAL Online Club existed until I received your letter and copies of the newsletter. It is a great idea to keep in touch and continue the great FAL spirit, as we had the best and safest airline that ever existed. It is a very sorry story that finally unwound revealing the events and people who were directly involved with the demise of our company that led to a so-called chapter 11 bankruptcy. If only someone, somehow, could have handled it as a true chapter 11!!! Thank you for the two issues sent and I would like to subscribe to your very informative newsletter. I an sending a $10 check. A fellow employee, Don Grover, will also be joining after seeing the two newsletters. Don worked in the sales/marketing area and worked with Cal Reese through some early years. Say "hello" to Cal and thanks for organizing a "stay in touch" system for the old gang Regards, -Carl Willmann E-Mail: IFlyFAL@netscape.net (9/7/01) Hi Jake, At the very end of our demise, but before the doors were actually closed, Bob Ashby retired under the Age 60 Rule. You already know that Bob was Frontier's first black pilot. He had been a Tuskegee Airman of WWII fame. Following WWII, he flew A-26 Invaders in Korea. Later, he retired as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. Following his Air Force career he became a United flight instructor before coming with Frontier the same time Emily did, January 29, 1973. Doing so, Bob Ashby became the first AND only Tuskegee Airman commercial airline pilot. Bob was one number senior to Emily. I was the ALPA MEC chairman in '86 when the Tuskegee Airmen group asked me to come to their convention to make a special presentation to Ashby. Ardell Arfsten was the VP Flight Ops then, so I called Ardell to see if he had any ideas on what we could do for a Frontier "gift" to Captain Ashby at the Tuskegee Airmen event in Orlando. Ardell and I looked around the GO before spotting a very nice photo of a Frontier B-737 hanging on the wall. We decided that it would make a fine gift and that we could have a number of pilots sign around the border of the photo before replacing the glass and frame. We did that. I took the picture to Florida convention and was made at home by these intrepid old aviators. There were several hundred members, family, and guests in attendance. When I gazed out into this large audience, I felt that I was very likely the only white guy there. The Tuskegee Airmen are real class group. I presented Captain Ashby with the photo which I am sure he still has today. Not long after returning to DEN, I heard from either Ardell or Carl. I can't remember which. However, it became readily apparent that we had taken Carl's personal property in the form of the B-737 photograph! When I explained to Carl how the "theft" came about, he was very kind and understanding. A real class guy. -Billy Walker (Est6/6/03) Note with renewal: Hi Jake, Many thanks for your news pub as it brings back many memories of the past. I started with Monarch Airlines on Feb 18, 1948. The merger with Challenger and Arizona then became Frontier Airlines. One day, I need to continue this story! -Carl Willmann (8/6/09) His date of hire conflicts with what Cal Reese said above. The 7/1/52 FL maintenance seniority list shows his date as 2/17/47 which agrees with Cal. -Jake Carl, manager-project engineering worked at FL 1947 - 1988 and had about 41 1/2 years when he left during post-bankruptcy, second only to Cal Reese in years of service, as far as I know. He will be 90 years old in June. -Jake Lamkins (4/10/14) C. V. WILLMAN Notation says Carl DOB 6/23/24 DOH 2/17/47 DEN Fore. Happy Birthday, Dad! Lynne Willmann This pic was taken last year on his 95th birthday. Jake Lamkins Lynne Willmann, Some folks want to phone Carl for his birthday. Is there a number? Lynne Willmann Jake Lamkins, Dad is in memory care and does not have a phone. At this point, he would not really even know how to talk to anyone coherently. I'm sorry that this is the situation. I wll pm his address to you Jake, and you can pass that along. I believe he still understands & would love to see cards. Joe Aguirre Sorry to hear that. Yes, I met Carl way back in 1946. He, Leanord Stewart., Kenny Holmes went to work for Monarch. I ended working for Frontier Oct 1963. Then came Sept. 1986. What a revolting situation, especially for the 'Old Timers.' Lynne Willmann Dad (Carl Willmann) worked on a lot of those leasing deals during the last years of the original FAL. After working for the bankruptcy court, he started his own company, specializing in airplane leasing for both domestic & international airlines. (6/25/20) Jake Carl may be the most senior Frontier employee ever, 1947 - 1988, because of his post bankruptcy work. 41 years! and he turned 96 years old last Jun 23rd. He was one of the few 40+ years FLolks - having worked two years in post-bankruptcy. -Jake Lamkins (6/1/21) Bill Buse This is sad news to hear. My stepfather, Harold Ruppel, and Carl Willmann were very close friends and Carl and his family were like a member of our family. We spent much time playing pool in their basement and Carl always loved showing us his latest pictures. I still remember his pictures from his trip to Singapore to pick up the 737 that Frontier bought from Singapore and how amazing that trip was. Bernice Thoele Great picture and I did not know that Carl Willmann has died. Don and I loved him and his family Joe Aguirre What great folks they were to work with in my 23 years of working for Frontier. Met Carl in Oct. 1946. (6/1/21) Richard Bennett Sorry to hear of Carl's passing.I worked with Carl at Boeing & Douglas when he was in charge of pursuing new aircraft for FAL. Bowled with him & his wife on the FAL bowling team . He will be missed Bill Buse This picture of Carl Willmann and Harold Ruppel at the Kennedy Space Center is one that brings back special memories for me. I was living in Palm Bay, Florida at the time around the late 1970s to early 1980s and when Frontier was flying one of their 737s to Miami, Florida for an Air Florida lease. Harold, Carl, and their wives flew along on the flight and I remember Boyd Stevens being the pilot on that flight. They also brought along a case of Coors beer since it wasn't available in Florida at that time. Harold, Carl, and their wives came up from Miami to my place in Palm Bay and spent a few days with me and did the tourist things such as the visit to the Kennedy Space Center. And the Coors beer was especially popular with my Florida friends. It was such a great visit that I have many great memories of. Bonnie Dahl Bless you Carl!
