BOB SMITH 1967 - 1986 STATION AGENT, TICKET COUNTER AGENT SLC BOI My Father, Robert B. Smith, worked for Frontier in Salt Lake City for about 20 years. Right up to the very last sad day. For about 15 years now, I have been searching for model kits to build to remember Frontier. Originally I was going to build them and give them to my Dad, but he was killed in a car accident Sept. 1998. I have found models and decals for the Sunliner Teton DC-3, and a 737, and MD-80 with the Red "F" Livery. I was just wondering if any of you might know where I could locate decals and models in both liveries for the CV-580, and Crescent decals for the 737, and 727-100, -200. If you have any information for me, I would really appreciate it. I may not be too old (31), but I sure do miss "The Real Frontier." I also a mechanic by the name of Gary. I don't remember his last name, but he worked for Hudson General in Salt Lake City, UT, and was still there when I left 3 years ago. And I also worked with Terry Hall at American Airlines. He told me he was a former Frontier mechanic in DEN. He has since retired from AA. Thank you in advance for your help. -Darin Smith (3/29/04) Hi Darin, Great hearing from you. Darin mentions his dad's death which I did not find on your list. The SSDI shows two with his name for Sep 1998 but only one with a UT connection: ROBERT B SMITH 20 Sep 1943 15 Sep 1998 (V) (FO) (none specified) 528-58-2605 Utah Does this look like our guy? I thought you would want the info. -Jake Lamkins (3/29/04) Ref: ROBERT B SMITH 20 Sep 1943 - 15 Sep 1998 (V)(FO)(none specified)528-58-2605 Utah. He started to work in SLC July 11, 1967 as a Station Agent, and was last listed in SLC in July, 1986 as a Ticket Counter Agent. The info that you have from the SSDI is correct. -Ken Schultz (3/29/04) I have attached a photo of my Dad with my kids at Disneyland 5 months before he died. He was not in maintenance. That is the field I went into. I do not know exactly what year he started with Frontier, but I do know he was there to the end. Even I remember that last day. My Dad worked the ticket counter for a while, then moved into Ramp Operations. He went to work for American Airlines a few years later working on the ramp. He was born September 20, 1943, and Died in a car accident on September 15, 1998. -Darin Smith (3/29/04) Posted at the FL Club: Darin Smith, the son of SLC agent Robert Smith, has joined. Darin said his dad died in a car wreck in 1998 which many of us didn't know about. -Jake Lamkins (3/30/04) I worked with your dad in SLC years ago. He was fun to be around and was always on the lookout for a used newspaper to take back to ops for his morning read. -Ron Abfalter (3/30/04) Posted at the FL Club: All of you don't know me, but I am happy to be a part of this group. Thank you Jake Lamkins for the invite. My Dad, Robert (Bob) Smith was with Frontier for about 20 years, right up to the last day. He worked most of his time in SLC, first as a Ticket Agent, then later as a Ramp Agent. When Frontier decided to open BOI, he went up there to help set the station up and get things running there, so some of you may know him from BOI. For those of you who do know him, you know he is one of the greatest people you would ever have the pleasure of knowing. I know I am biased because I am his son, but I am sure you would agree. After Frontier, he performed inventory for a few years at the Tooele Army Depot in Tooele, UT, and eventually got back into the airlines with American on the ramp. He put in over 10 years with American. Unfortunately, I regret to say, on September 15, 1998, he was killed in a car accident. It was a sad day for everyone who knew him. I wish I could remember names, but if you are a part of this group, and were some of the "airline family" that attended his funeral services, I say thank you very much. That really meant a lot to me and my family. At least he was on his way home from doing something he loved to do. He had gotten off work from American and decided to go fishing for a few hours. Jordanelle Reservoir is close to Salt Lake. On his way home, he was rear-ended coming down Parley's Canyon, at about the Lamb's Canyon exit. The truck left the road and flipped more than once. Thanks to Dad and Frontier, I developed my love for aircraft. It is in my blood. Even in these hard times, I don't want to work anywhere else. I got into the game about 11 years ago, going to school and working the security checkpoint at SLC. I worked the ramp, and as a fueler for Hudson General for a while. Then I finally got a job with McDonnell Douglas there in SLC. Now, I am proud to say (and I know Dad would agree), I am a cerified A+P Mechanic. I was working for American, until they laid me off last year. But I hope to be recalled before the end of this year. I miss working with aircraft. It was here in DFW with American that I worked with Terry Hall, who just before he retired from AA, told me he once was with Frontier as well. But enough about me. For those of you who knew Bob, Mom (Dana) and the family are doing well, and once again, on behalf of the family, thanks for the show of support for those of you who where at the funeral. And from me personally, thank you for the invitation, and allowing me to become a part of this wonderful family. Frontier (the REAL Frontier), will never die as long as we all remember. -Darin W. Smith (2nd son of Robert (Bob) Smith - Fort Worth, TX) (3/30/04) I remember Darin's dad well, I worked with Bob in SLC for several years. Good to hear from you Darin. How's your mom? -Paul Farris (3/30/04) It is so great to know that so many people remember who Bob is. To answer you question Paul, Mom is doing great. She still lives in SLC, and half of the family is still there with her. My oldest brother now lives in Oregon, moved there last year, and I have lived in the DFW area for three years now. My two younger brothers are still there. One is in West Jordan, and the other is in Magna. We are all married and she has 7 grandkids. The two in the picture on this groups homepage are mine. That was taken at Disneyland in April of 1998, 5 months before Dad died. Thanks again to everybody for welcoming me into the "Family", even though I never worked for Frontier, it will always be a part of me. -Darin Smith (3/30/04) Darin, Welcome to the FL Club ! I am glad to learn Bob's family is well and thriving. I had the pleasure of working with Bob in SLC and remember most how important his family was to him. Bob always smiled when talking about his wife and children. He would be proud of his legacy. -Bob Higley (3/31/04) FL Club: Our Newest Member is Dana Smith. Everybody welcome Dana Smith to the group. I asked Jake to send her an invite to join. As the wife of Bob Smith (SLC), I thought she would enjoy getting in touch with some of the people Dad used to work with. Some of you may remember her. She still resides in SLC, and remembers a few of you. -Darin Smith (4/5/04) My name is Darin Smith. I am the son of the late Bob Smith, SLC Agent. I am still an aircraft mechanic with SkyWest airlines, and during work last night I was sent to fix a grounded EMB-120 Brasilia in Rock Springs, WY. After driving up from SLC to RKS, I pulled into the employee parking lot and got a big smile on my face. You will see why in the attachments. After almost 24 years, it was very nice to see this on the SkyWest bagroom door! I already showed it to Mom (Dana), and just had to share it with the group! I love it....the legacy lives on!!!! (DARIN SENT TWO PIC OF RKS TERMINAL BAGGAGE DOOR WITH FL EMBLEM ON IT.) -Darin Smith (3/12/10) Whooee! I love it! Of course, I remember you and thanks for sharing. Email anything you would like to add. -Jake Lamkins (8/30/10) Darin, Good to know you continue to follow in your dad's footsteps in the airline industry. Like many I worked with in SLC your dad was nice to work with and taught me a lot about the airline. I do remember you. I was at a BBQ at your home and played around with you and your brother. He would be very proud of you. I hope your mom is well and please give her my regards -Bob Higley (8/30/10) I had the pleasure of working with Bob for a short time when BOI opened in May of 1979. He transferred from SLC but commuted back and forth every weekend to see his family. He worked in BOI for a short time then transferred back to SLC. He was our original TCA in BOI. -Jim Lane (8/31/10)
