Posted at the FL Club: Bob Lambourne, an aviation pioneer! Robert P. Lambourne started with Challenger Airlines on 7/1/47. By 1955 he was #23 on the pilot seniority list. 17 years later he had moved up 8 notches to #23. He retired in 1976 and lives today in Aurora CO, aged 90. Bob lost his wife of 70 years last May - Frances Anne was 89. Regretfully, -Ace Avakian (11/8/07) Few people know about Bob Lambourne. Bob attended the University of Utah on a track scholarship. After marriage, both he and his wife moved to Los Angeles where he ran track and majorerd in electrical engineering at the Univ. of Southern Calif. He gave up an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics to become a pilot. Before the U.S.entered WWII, he moved to Canada and joined the RCAF. After training and receiving his commission, he flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. When the U.S. entered the war, he flew P-38's and C47's when he transferred to the Eagle Squadron. He was commissioned a Major in the Air Corps and flew for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He was shot down while on a mission delivering top-secret documents. After bailing out over enemy territory, he escaped with the help of the French Underground. He was highly decorated by the U.S., Canadian, British and French governments.
