BOB ASHBY 1973 - 1986 PILOT DEN Hi Bob, I ran into the info on you at the Black Wings website. Your story is remarkable and I'm wondering if it would be okay to use the material for an article in the FL newsletter. Send me your postal address and I'll send you the last newsletter. Regards, Jake Lamkins, FL station agent 1964-86 - FYV STL JAC LAW ATL MAF SAN DEN (1/5/03) Yes you did mention the group at Yahoo. Send me the invite. They had a few article about me on some of the sites. Glad that you was able to see one. Was unable to make the Frontier reunion this summer, the wife and I was invited over to Nice, France for a month. Had to take advantage of that. One Frontier Pilot I haven't been able to find anything on is , Steve Larson, out of Salt Lake. Do you have anything on him? Take care, -Bob Ashby (1/6/03) I visited with Tucson this past February and toured the wonderful aviation museum. Just before leaving, I was looking at the exhibit area covering black aviators. There was a section devoted to Robert (Bob) Ashby. He was an instructor at United's training center. I'm sure some of you remember him. Bob and I were good friends. Subsequently, he was hired by Frontier Airlines at the same time Frontier hired a woman pilot. Bob told me what Frontier really wanted was an old, black woman pilot! He was one of the Tuskegee airmen as was George Brown, Colorado's lieutenant governor under Roy Romer. The three of us had season passes for the Denver Broncos many years ago. Bob attained the rank of full Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. -Jim in the RUPA newsletter (8/9/04) At the very end of our demise, but before the doors were actually closed, Bob Ashby retired under the Age 60 Rule. You already know that Bob was Frontier's first black pilot. He had been a Tuskegee Airman of WWII fame. Following WWII, he flew A-26 Invaders in Korea. Later, he retired as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. Following his Air Force career he became a United flight instructor before coming with Frontier the same time Emily did, January 29, 1973. Doing so, Bob Ashby became the first AND only Tuskegee Airman commercial airline pilot. Bob was one number senior to Emily. I was the ALPA MEC chairman in '86 when the Tuskegee Airmen group asked me to come to their convention to make a special presentation to Ashby. Ardell Arfsten was the VP Flight Ops then, so I called Ardell to see if he had any ideas on what we could do for a Frontier "gift" to Captain Ashby at the Tuskegee Airmen event in Orlando. Ardell and I looked around the GO before spotting a very nice photo of a Frontier B-737 hanging on the wall. We decided that it would make a fine gift and that we could have a number of pilots sign around the border of the photo before replacing the glass and frame. We did that. I took the picture to Florida convention and was made at home by these intrepid old aviators. There were several hundred members, family, and guests in attendance. When I gazed out into this large audience, I felt that I was very likely the only white guy there. The Tuskegee Airmen are real class group. I presented Captain Ashby with the photo which I am sure he still has today. A real class guy. -Billy Walker (6/8/05) Subject: MEMORIAL PARK DEDICATION TO TUSKEGEE AIRMEN Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, at the Memorial Park, Luke AFB. We had all of the "Original Tuskegee", that were at the Convention, with Widows and Family members, attend. They were escorted to Luke AFB by the Phoenix Motorcycle Squad, to and from, the Hotel. Assisting Col. Rydholm, Cmd. 944th Fighter Wing, were Lt. Col. Lee Archer, Lt. Col. Robert Ashby, M/St. James Sheppard and T/Sgt. George Watson. The beautiful "Red Tail" F-16, painted in the color of our WWII planes, dominate the Park. Lunch was served in the Hanger after the park ceremony. The ceremony was attended by 5 Generals, Local Mayors, Distinguish Visitors, and Base personnel. A grand time was had by all. -Bob Ashby (8/12/06) Subject: 15 MAY DIAMONDBACK/COLORADO BASEBALL GAME The Diamondback honored the Tuskegee Airmen and John Woodruff (Gold Medal Winner 1936 Olympics), at the JACKIE ROBINSON DAY baseball game. We were introduced on the field and had pictures taken with Team members. During the game in our Sky box, members of the Cardinal Football Team came up and watched the game with us. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinal Wide receiver, said that they will be in the playoff this year, I hope they make it. A good time was had by all. We were guest of the Diamond last year, each time we went they WON, so they like having us there. Tony Clark hit two home run in the game. -Bob Ashby (4/16/07) Subject: President Bush - Congressional Gold Medal-Tuskegee Airmen President Bush speaking to the Tuskegee Airmen at the Congressional Gold Medal. I am up there in the front row, all Videos were taken from the rear, so you won't get views from the front. There is a shot of the Pledge Allegiance, you can see me fourth from the right. It was an outstanding program, the President on down did an excellent job. It was indeed an honor. -Bob Ashby (5/3/07) Hello Bob, I want to feature you in the next FL newsletter. I sent an issue to you back in 2003. I found your Black Wings essay online and would like your permission to use it. I'll be glad to send you a copy of the issue when it comes out. Thanks very much and I hope all's well with you. Jake Lamkins (12/9/08) Both Bob and Emily Howell Warner had 1/29/73 seniority dates. Bob was just ahead of Emily due to being older. -Jake (12/9/08) Jake, You have my permission to use articles which you deem worthwhile. Will check out the website and will sign up for the FL Club. Thanks for the offer, in touch with the FL people here in the PHX area. Just had a Picnic here in Scottsdale. Was in Utah recently, Mt Pleaseant, Utah for a Fly-In, was in touch with Denny Finke, but no one from Salt Lake could come down. Take care and regards to all. -Bob Ashby (12/9/08) Hello Jake, Thanks for the write-up in the FL News. It was great. Spoke with Billy Walker after he got his copy. The Frontier Picnic here in Phoenix was well attended. Frank Meyer was there, great that he is getting around despite his condition. We all look much older. Had a ride in a P-51 two seater, did some rolls but was a little rusty. Take care, going to Denver to attend event with Marlon Green, the first (on #1 Black Pilot seniority). He won the lawsuit & got 8 year seniority. (Sat 31 Jan) Keep up the good work. -Bob Ashby (1/28/09) Jake, A story about Bob Rich: I was the co-pilot on the overnight to Billings, MT. We got in early and went out to dinner. Many of you would remember the place where they had the tail of an airplane sticking out from the outside wall. We decided to have a beer before dinner and sat at the bar. So happens there were two cowboys at the bar, well over 6 feet & 220 lbs. Somehow the conversation got heated. I kept telling Bob to tone down and let's go to our table. Bob would have none of it. I kept telling him that the two cowboys were going to kill us. As you know, Bob had a fiery temper and it was all I could do to get us away from those cowboys before they killed us. I consider that one of my close calls with Bob. We flew many times together, a great guy, but don't stir him up. -Bob Ashby (10/5/09) Hi Bob, Thanks for your renewal and the story about Bob Rich. I posted it at his memorial webpage. -Jake Lamkins (10/5/09) FL Club Captain Bob Ashby Photo is on front page of FAL news #34. Very nice story. This past year I had the pleasure of touring the Tuskeegee Airmen Museum at Moton Field. It is a work in progress and will be really nice when it is completed. The staff there are US park rangers and were very knowledgeable and cordial to all visitors. The hangar was not open to visitors the day we were there. The park ranger in charge was pretty impressed with some of the questions asked by my 12yr old grandson and we ended up getting to tour the hangar after all. We were really excited about our side trip to the museum. Coincidentally, it just happens to be near veterans day. So I would like to extend my thanks to Bob and all his fellow pilots and ground crew. It was a welcome sight to the bomber pilots and crews when elements of the 332nd Fighter Group were assigned as escorts into Germany. The Airmen's success during World War II – not losing a single bomber to enemy fire in more than 200 combat missions – is a record unmatched by any other fighter group. Thanks again, Bob. -Chuck Tisckos , PUB OMA MCI STL DEN SATO (11/5/09) Let me add my THANKS to you and the other Tuskegee Airmen for your service to this country, Bob. We are in your debt, -Jake Lamkins (11/5/09) Chuck, Thanks for your kind words. The Tuskegee Airmen had a job to do, and went about to accomplish it in the most professional way they could. Everyone was doing their job, we could not let the sentiment of the time effect how we did ours. Once again, thanks for your kind words. Regards -Bob Ashby (11/5/09) R Ashby Pilot seniority date of 1/29/73 on the 9/1/85 FL/ALPA Seniority List. Talk about latest cockpit, everything is automatic, even the emergency procedures. I rode as co-pilot, seems to me with all these new gadgets, too much time was spent pushing buttons, instead of looking out. I spent lots of time looking out. I can see where the kids with video games would love this aircraft. Got back to PHX in time to change clothes, pick up the wife and head to Vegas for the Tuskegee convention. Take care and keep up the good work. As ever, -Bob Ashby (8/23/12) Jake, At the present time I am listed as the only Tuskegee Airmen to fly Commercial. Not one of the Tuskegee Airmen who left the service at the end of WWII or there after, was hired by the Airlines. However I have been checking with the FAA, and they have some information on August Martin, that he flew for Seaboard World as a Charter Pilot some times in Germany. You mention in one of your articles, that August Martin flew for Seaboard World, I would appreciate it if you could provide me with any information that you have. The information that I have secured from a FAA source, is that they have no record of him flying Commercial Airline in the USA. They have him logging time in Germany as a Co-Pilot, and working on the Docks here in the USA when not flying with Seaboard. Only family members can secure information from the FAA, I know that he grew up in Bronx, NY, but unable to find any trace of family members. There was some event in Long Island that honored him sometime back, but all my attempts have resulted in no answers. He did a lots of flying in light airplanes here in the States, even instructing at times, according to FAA records. I am trying to get as much information as I can, so that he can be recognized as a Tuskegee Airmen that did beat the record and flew as a Commercial Pilot also. Thanks for any help that you can gather, -Bob Ashby (11/23/12) Hi Bob, Good hearing from you, as always. I mentioned August Martin in the Winter 2009, #34, FL News. I ran into his name when I was researching your article. You can find that issue at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News2009-34Winter.pdf I checked again and there's a lot of internet info on a high school named after Martin. Some links that might prove helpful are http://www.dot.state.mn.us/aero/aved/pdf/augie.pdf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Martin_High_School http://avstop.com/history/blackairlines/augustmartin.htm http://www.nytimes.com/1998/11/19/nyregion/perry-h-young-jr-79-pioneering-pilot-dies.html August mentioned at the end Hope this helps but I'm sure you can google his name and find even more info. Take care and keep in touch, -Jake Lamkins (11/23/12) Jake, The Chinese-Canadian WWII Military Veterans, invited our AZ Tuskegee Airmen Chapter, to Vancouver BC to attend an Honor Event for them. I was the only Original member attending from AZ, Col Charles McGee another Original from MD came. There were 12 Members and 4 wives also from AZ attending. The Chinese-Canadian Veterans wanted us to be with them at this Belated Honor for them. Chinese-Canadian's participation in the World Wars is largely unknown outside the Chinese communities, yet their contribution to these conflicts and to Canada was significant. As a result of their sacrifice in World War II, Chinese were finally able to claim the opportunities and right to vote, which in turn, led to membership in professional societies such as law, medicine, accountancy and engineering which had previously been closed to them. However, despite their courage and patriotism, there are few official displays dedicated to Chinese Canadian participation in either war. -Bob Ashby (7/5/13) Hi Bob, Always great to hear from you. Thanks for the article you sent. -Jake Lamkins (7/6/13) Jake, Sometime back, I nominated Bob for the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame. I can not understand why he hasn't been inducted yet. He is qualified many times over and continues to promote aviation in Arizona and around the US. Bob has been a great ambassador for Arizona, Arizona Veteran's, aviation, as well as keeping alive the historical exploits of those venerable Tuskegee Airmen. Hopefully, more folks will submit a letter of support on behalf of LTC Robert Ashby to: The Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame Attn: Selection Committee 6000 E. Valencia Rd. Tucson, Arizona 85756 -Billy Walker (7/12/13) Jake, Cheryl took the photo below of Bob Ashby this evening at the Commemorative Air Force banquet's "Walk of Honor." The Tuskegee Airmen and the WASPS were honored as an organization and Bob was singled out for a special honor. As you know Bob was an original Tuskegee Airman who has, for seven decades, persistently worked to break down the color barriers. He was the first black pilot with Frontier. He is the ONLY Tuskegee Airman to become an airline pilot. He was the second black pilot to become an airline pilot period. Today Bob is still busy promoting aviation to school groups and organizations asking him to tell his amazing story. -Billy Walker (5/10/15) Thanks for the update, Billy. I featured Bob in the Winter 2009 FL News http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News2009-34Winter.pdf -Jake Lamkins (5/11/15) Jake, I would like to purchase some of the older issues of Frontier Magazines, understand that you might have some on hand. The issue that I would like is the one with the article about me, the Family would like copies. Would like 10 or more if they are available. How many do you have, maybe I can take them off your hand Our Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen here in Arizona can use them at our Booth at Airshows that we attend, getting needed funds. Let me know what is available, and the cost. Good article on Frank Meyer, thanks for keeping Frontier Airline people informed. -Bob Ashby (1/23/16) I came up with an idea that could add money to the Frontier News Letter. I spoke with Billy Walker and we both think that this might fly. The back issue of Frontier News Letter, that had my picture on the cover is very eye catching in color, and I think that it would sell very well at the Museum. My picture and Family is part of the display at the Museum and the eye catching Cover would become a great sales item. I would agree to having the Frontier News Letter receive the input of the sales, this will keep the news letter in good Financial status. Of course being able to get a publishing system available, and agreement with the Museum for sale of the Newsletter will take some effort. I don't have any personal contact with the Directors of the Museum, but I think that any revenue input would make a favorable impression with them. I will try and get some contact with the Museum to let them know of this idea, and in the meantime you being able to establish a supply route and agreement on pricing with them. I am sure your contact with the Museum outlining your plan will be met favorable, input of money is always in their minds. I think that this will be a good financial move if we can sell the plan. I know something like this will take some time to implement, but I think it is worth a try and the possibility looks good. Let me know what you think, and any ways that I may help to get this started. I think that we should try to get this going, the opportunity looks favorable. -Bob Ashby (6/25/18) Hi Bob, I really appreciate your idea for helping the newsletter. However, as you will see in the next issue, I am concerned with the money I owe people who have subscribed to the newsletter and what will happen if I fly west before they get their money's worth. So, I've suspended taking in any more money for the time being. I will keep plugging away at it and current subscribers like you will get it as long as I can put it out. Thanks very much for your support. -Jake Lamkins (6/28/18) FLacebook Scott Kendell shared a post on March 27, 2019 We wanted to give a shout out and honor, Captain Robert Ashby!
