See article in FebMar 1959 Frontiersman. -Jake Lamkins (11/11/05) Lorraine Slaugh - Stewardess - Gone West Here’s an addition to your website to honor my mother, Lorraine Slaugh Wilson. I understand she flew the Phoenix to Albuquerque flight in the 1950s sometime. She and her sister Alberta Rae Slaugh Heeren were the first ever sisters hired to the same airline. Alberta (Birdie) was based in Denver. Lorraine was based in Phoenix. I understand they were also exchange stewardesses to Hawaiian Airlines in the 1950s sometime. Serving with Frontier Airlines and serving as the shop steward for the stewardess union were the things she was most proud of before becoming a wife and mother. If you like, I can also send pictures of my aunt Birdie. -Linda Wilson Stephens (12/13/18) Hi Linda, It's great hearing from you though I'm sorry to hear your mom has flown west. I'll build memorial webpages for her and her sister. Please send pix of Birdie. It would be helpful if you could send larger scans of your mom's pix too. Also, do you have an obituary for them? Birdie was a widow whose husband had died from Korean War injuries six months before. Both have flown west and I'm working on their memorial webpages. Email anything else you would like to add. I definitely need some Birdie pix. One like you sent of your mom would be great. I found an article about her Hawaii exchange. -Jake Lamkins (12/24/18) My cousin, Linda Stephens, forwarded to me your email requesting pictures of Birdie Slaugh Heeren Here are a couple of pictures of my mom in her Frontier uniform. I have a couple more pictures buried in a cedar chest that I can send to you later when I've unearthed them. They are promotional pics for the airline. Let me know that you got these. I'm excited to see that you are working on this and can't wait until the page is complete! Thank you! -Lisa Heeren Watson (12/26/18) Thanks for the great pix. I should finish up your mom's webpage in a few days: http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Birdie_Nelson_Heeren.html She went by Nelson during her Frontier career. I have found some info on her first husband, Rodney Nelson, who flew west in 1953. I also have a few things on your dad who worked at Frontier too. He was the Grand Junction sales representative 1959 til about 1962. Is he still alive? I'll email you and Linda when I complete Birdie's webpage. -Jake Lamkins (12/27/18) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Birdie Nelson Heeren DEN flight attendant Birdie Nelson Heeren's memorial webpage is posted at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Birdie_Nelson_Heeren.html She married GJT sales representative Gary Heeren in May 1963. Her sister Lorraine Slaugh started flying the same day she did in Jan 1954. -Jake Lamkins (12/28/18) I knew Birdie Nelson very well. She and her sister had started five years before I did at Frontier, very nice very friendly and later married Gary Heeren. Gary was in sales with me at Frontier. We were very good friends and then in 1962 he left to join SAS as district manager in Seattle, Washington. By then I was in Billings and was calling on Boeing as we were taking Boeing Employees from Great Falls to Minot and other cities where they were putting in the Minuteman missiles. While in Seattle in the early part of 1963 I had lunch with Gary and Birdie. Later that spring Gary presented me with two round trip passes first class on SAS from New York to Rome. My wife and I did take the trip and had a great time and I'll always be grateful to Gary for his friendship. -Herb Schmidt (12/28/18)
