BILL WHALEN 1958 - 1986 STATION AGENT CYS LAR SMF This article was in the CHEYENNE EAGLE-TRIBUNE in October, 2001. Sadly, another death in our workforce. You might make mention of Dick Demo's death in the next issue of FRONTIER NEWS. Sorry I didn't get it to you earlier. -Bill Whalen (2/11/02) WILLIAM J WHALEN, FAL 1958 TO BANKRUPTCY, HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN PERFECT HEALTH. THAT IS, UP UNTIL ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO WHEN HIS HEART GOT SOME KIND OF VIRUS. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, HE IS IN A HOSPITAL IN SAN FRANCISCO BEING KEPT ALIVE BY TWO PUMPS INSERTED IN THE HEART. THEY ARE KEEPING HIM ALIVE SO HE CAN HAVE A HEART TRANSPLANT. I AM WRITING TO YOU TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF SENDING EMAIL TO EVERY FRONTIER EMPLOYEE IN YOUR RECORDS. IF YOU DO, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK EVERYBODY TO PRAY ON ONE SPECIFIC DAY. MAYBE ADD 5 DAYS TO THE DATE THE EMAIL GOES OUT AND MAKE THAT 5TH DAY THE DAY OF PRAYER. MY SUGGESTIONS FOR PRAYER ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. PRAY THAT THE LORD'S WILL BE DONE. (HIS WILL IS THAT ALL PEOPLE BE HEALED.) 2. PRAY FOR A MIRACULOUS HEALING OF HIS REAL HEART AND GIVE THE DOCTORS THE ABILITY TO ACCEPT IT. 3. IF IT STILL COMES DOWN TO A HEART TRANSPLANT, PRAY FOR A PERFECT MATCH, IN THE NEAR FUTURE AND THAT THE OPERATION WOULD BE A COMPLETE SUCCESS WITH HIS BODY ACCEPTING THE HEART. LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND WHATEVER THE CHARGE, I WILL GLADLY PAY FOR IT. -DAVE CROSS (10/23/02) I'm sorry to hear about Bill's medical problems. It was a virus that got my heart back in '93. I've been on medication ever since due to the damage. Most servers have anti-spam software in place that makes "broadcast" e-mailing very difficult. However, I will post your message at the FL Club for everybody to see. Keep me up to date on Bill's progress. Is there an e-mail address at the hospital where Bill can get messages. Quite a few hospitals have it now. What is the name & address of his hospital? How about cards? -Jake Lamkins (10/23/02) Just read the post on the FL AlumniGroup Board. I've been in contact with his wife Mary, Bill is very ill and in need of a heart transplant. He has had about four (4) surgeries in the past four weeks that he's been in the hospital. He is currently in the Transitional Cardiac Car Unit (TCCU) at California Pacific Medical Center, in SFO. The address is PO Box 7999, SFO 94120-7999. I would assume that he can get cards and would love to hear from the FLamily. Mary told me that she would keep me updated and I'll pass along information that I get. -Charlie Clark (10/23/02) Attn: Charley Clark, Any news on how Bill Whalen is doing since this oct 23 message?? -Ron Herring (11/7/02) I received word from Darrell Robson and Mimi Buckstead McCartney on 1/27/03 that Bill had died the 23rd. (BILL) WHALEN) Died in San Francisco on January 23, 2003 after an extended illness. A beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, Bill is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary, son Will Whalen of San Luis Obispo, California and daughters Jennifer Kimzey of Davis, California, Peggy Cocke of Austin, Texas, and Sylvia Settlemoir of Folsom, California. Bill is also survived by his parents, Leo and Alma Whalen of Cheyenne, Wyoming, brothers Joe Whalen and Jim Whalen, both of Cheyenne; sisters Ann Rhodes of Cheyenne; Jeanette Whalen of Castro Valley, California; Patricia Holland of Kennewick, Washington. In addition there are eight grandchildren; Madeleine Whalen; Jillian, Janelle, and Jared Kimzey; Savannah and Marshall Cocke, Landis and Megan Settlemoir. Born in Greeley, Nebraska on May 28, 1939 and raised in Hastings, Bill moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming after high school where he began working for Frontier Airlines in 1958. He continued working for the company in Laramie, Wyoming and Sacramento, California until 1986 when Frontier went out of business. Even though his airline career ended with Frontier, his love of air planes and flying never did. After Frontier, Bill worked for Consolidated Freightways until his retirement in 1999. A memorial service will be held at twelve noon on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at the Holy Trinity Church in El Dorado Hills. McNary's Chapel assisted the family with arrangements. Guestbook "Bill was truly one of greatest guys that lived. It was my pleasure to have worked with Bill in Sacramento at Frontier Airlines. He will be missed by all who knew him. My condolences to Mary and the family." -J.D. Newton "Bill was such a wonderful man, and a valued friend. He dearly loved Mary, and always spoke of her with loving appreciation. He helped make me a better man, and I always looked up to him." -Robert & Grace Winters From the Sacramento Bee on 1/26/2003. Mike Barney, Don, Rich, Charlie and I attended Bill's memorial service today. It was a short Catholic funeral mass followed by remembrances given by his oldest daughter and other family members. It was very touching and made me feel so fortunate to have known him. The four months that he spent in the SF hospital brought the family together in ways they hadn't experienced since they were all at home. His daughter said they were all closer than ever and each had many hours alone with him, reminiscing and discussing their lives together. At one point he told them that he had a wonderful life and wouldn't have scripted it any other way. He had seven surgeries in the four month period - Mary said goodbye to him three times previously but not this time as it was supposed to be very minor surgery. The attachment is from the card given at the church. Jake - maybe you can add this to the website? The picture was taken in May, 2002. -Mimi (Buckstead) McCartney (1/29/03) Hello Jake. Thank your nice note. I think the last issue of the Frontier newsletter was the last one in Bill's subscription and I decided not to resubscribe but wondered if I could get the issue with his obituary in it? I'll be glad to send the money to cover the expense. Again, thank you for your note. -Mary Whalen (3/8/03) No problem, Mary.
