BILL WAYNE 1971 - 1985 VICE PRESIDENT-LOCAL SERVICE MARKETING, VICE PRESIDENT-OPERATIONS, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT DEN William D.Wayne, December 1946, wrote and sent an update on his activities since graduation. He served as Third and Second in T-2 tankers, with a year off for graduate school at Purdue. While in port at Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, he was called to active duty with the Navy. He went to Navy Flight School, and at age 25 was flying jet fighters for the Navy - F9Fs, F3Ds, Banshees and Furies. He left the Navy in 1956, married a TWA flight stewardess and went to work for General Electric, and later, Aerojet General. He headed the nation's Nuclear Rocket Development Program in Nevada, and was later COO and Executive Vice President for Frontier Airlines, a General Tire Company. Bill and his wife are retired now in Carefree, AZ. He also serves as an Admissions Field Representative for Kings Point. He sent a couple of pictures along; one of him as a (younger) Navy officer in the early '50s. -Kings Pointer magazine, Summer 2002 (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy) (8/6/04) Cal phoned and chatted about Don Cope and other items. He said he, Jerry Fox and John Carpenter started DEN station in 1950. It had been handled by CO before and that's who Don worked for as a senior agent. Don helped him getting the FL station started. Later Don opened a Dairy Queen near Colfax and Quebec in Denver. It did so well he quit CO to run it. Jerry Fox was the first DEN station manager and Cal was the second. Bill Wayne is in hospice either in PHX or DEN. Cal will work on an article about the FL secretaries. -Jake Lamkins (3/22/11) Just got a call from Denise Hurd that Bill Wayne passed away this morning , March 26, at 0500. When Ryland moved up to #1 Bill became #2 as Executive VP and Board member. Bill was a Navy jet fighter pilot, married to a TW flight attendant, and once headed up a nuclear development program in Nevada. Cal Reese had recently told me he was in hospice. Bill was 84 years old. -Jake Lamkins (3/26/11) Posted at Facebook w/pic: FL Executive VP Bill Wayne died this morning at age 84. Bill moved up to FL's #2 slot when Glen Ryland became President in 1981 after Al Feldman left. -Jake Lamkins (3/26/11) Sorry to hear about Bill. -Christina Bonatti (3/26/11) Bill's wife, BJ, had called to inform me and Bill had called me several weeks ago to advise me of Chuck Demoney's death. BJ said she was calling several Frontier people to inform them as well. I brought Bill, with Al's approval, into Frontier early on our arrival and we were close friends. -Glen Ryland (3/27/11) I had a call from Hank Lund yesterday. He said that Bill Wayne had died on Saturday. Have you heard anything about that? Evidently he died of kidney failure and had been ill for several months in a PHX hospice. Thanks, -Lynda Lane (3/30/11) Thanks for the info on Bill. I had gotten word several days ago and posted it at the FL Club and the FLacebook page. I still do not have an obituary. -Jake Lamkins (3/30/11) Posted at Facebook A neighbor of mine...so sorry to hear. Kind wishes to his family - Gretchen Porter Densley (4/1/11) Posted at the FL Club and Facebook: Subject: Bill Wayne's memorial webpage BILL WAYNE 1971 - 1985 VICE PRESIDENT-LOCAL SERVICE MARKETING, VICE PRESIDENT-OPERATIONS, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT DEN http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bill_Wayne.html Still have not seen an obtuary. Please send to me if you see one. Post your remembrances. My association with Bill was minimal. I usual saw him at the Ramada Inn on Smith Road when he and Buz Larkin were having lunch and I was trying to get Buz to solve an ALEA problem when I was ALEA Master Chairman 1980-84. Bill was alway affable and easy to talk to. -Jake Lamkins (4/6/11) I, too, had minimal association with Mr. Wayne while in DEN, but came to know him better when I took over the TUS City Mgr. position. He had a home in TUS at the foot of Mt. Lemon. We saw him quite often traveling to/from DEN. I recall one evening, he and lovely wife invited our station personnel up to his home for a cookout. That's where I came to know and respect him better. Condolences to the family. -Jim Mustain (4/6/11) Jake, I received this obituary from Bill's wife, BJ Wayne. -Glen Ryland (4/7/11) Thank you, Glen, I added it to Bill's memorial webpage at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bill_Wayne.html -Jake Lamkins (4/7/11) Bill Wayne & his delightful & charming wife "B.J" were indeed Friends........The Wayne's had a residence in the Tucson hills ( overlooking TUS ) in the mid Seventies when I was stationed here as an SA........One Saturday Evening they hosted the entire FL TUS Station Personnel ( From Stn Mg to Sky Caps, Mechanics & Plane Cleaners ) to their home for Drinks & a Sumptuous Buffet. Bill Wayne had no pretentious Airs about him at all........He meant what he said....And he said what he meant........A grand guy and an inspirational leader ! -Bob Pearson (6/10/11) I am leaving on Saturday to take Bill’s ashes to the Navy Department for Burial at Sea. I am driving and spending Saturday night with the Bishops in Indio. Then I will join Maressa, Greg, spouses and five grandchildren in San Diego. We will deliver the ashes on Tuesday, July 12th. I have requested that the ashes be taken out on the next available carrier. It will be a working mission, so dependents cannot go along. However, the Navy will video tape the ceremony for us and give us the exact latitude and longitude of the burial. Bill will have full military honors with the music and the flags. I think it will be impressive to see the ceremony retroactively. I think he would have liked this. It will be my final closure. I also had two memorials for him here at our home shortly after he passed. At the second event we had had some rain, which stopped during the memorial. Everyone went outside to look at the view and a huge rainbow came up toward Black Mountain and hovered over our heads. I know it was Bill flying around up there. Hopefully time will heal the hole I have in my heart for him. He will be missed forever. -B J Wayne (7/4/11) I certainly remember Bill. He was a classy guy!!!! -Lori Wolfe (7/7/11) FLacebook - FL Club DEN vice-president Bill Wayne's memorial webpage has been updated: http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bill_Wayne.html -Jake Lamkins (10/1/15)
