He went to GSW and interveiwed with Truman Jones. He also had an offer from the state police. He was just out of the Air Force as a 1st Lt. Next day he told Truman he would take the job for $20 more than the $220 offerred. Truman agreed and told him to start next day. The rest of the FYV agents went on "strike" (no union then) because he got more. They were all fired and new hiring began. Walt Whitecrow was the FYV manager with Jones and Pappy O'Drain helping out til replacements could be hired.. The other agents were relief agent Bill Sharkey and Bill Ockerman. -Jake Lamkins (5/26/09) Subject: Updated memorial webpage BILL SHARKEY 1951 - 1985 STATION AGENT, RELIEF AGENT, STATION MANAGER BGD WWR GUY LBL DEN http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bill_Sharkey.html Added an item and moved to an ad-free site. Bill was working Vacation Relief. He was very helpful in my study to pass the SWRS (WX Observation Reporting) test. This was 1954 - Borger had 4 DC3 flights per day. -Ray Marney (1/27/17) Bill was working at Liberal when I got my first manager job with FL. That was March of 78, We worked together until we closed LBL. I was a little concerned when I took the job. The three other agents and I had less than half the time that Bill had. As it turned out I was very glad that Bill was there. He showed me how to be a manager. He was just a super guy and I don't remember a time that he didn't know what to do. I won't forget the morning that He and I deiced a 580 with a mop and a bucket. We got out 3000 flights without a station delay and were working on 4000 when we closed. Yes we were a FLamily and it was guys like Bill Sharkey that made that happen. Those young agents that worked with Bill and I were every bit equal at a younger age and I would not have traded any of them: Mark Hansen, Gary Jackson, Randy Loucks, Bill Greenway - I took Randy's place when he left for SLC. R I P Bill. -Roger Vote. (1/27/17)
