BILL MCCAFFREY 1968 - 1986 PILOT DEN Re 1985 photo: F/O John Jason is on the left. (We retired at UPS.) Captain Bill McCaffrey has four stripes on his sleeve. -Al Beardsley (7/4/12) Captain Bill McCaffrey I just heard from Bill McCaffrey's daughter, Peggy. Bill lined up on Runway 27 yesterday morning. In the wee hours he departed Westbound while sleeping. A very peaceful departure for a former Marine F-8 Crusader pilot. Bill & I shared commuter pad living in Kansas City those many years ago. Seems like yesterday and I wish there was a way to turn the clock back! We did get together at the Phoenix Frontier Reunions albeit he missed the last one due to his health issues. I'll let you know when I have the details on his services. -Billy Walker (1/30/19) Very sorry to hear about Bill's passing. He was so nice to me when I was a 26 year old new hire, back in 1978 (I looked like I was about 12), based in MCI on the CV-580. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago! I was assigned to do my IOE trip with Bill. Back then, our IOE time consisted of sitting in the jumpseat and observing. We flew a 12 stopper (MCI-STL-TBN-HRO-FYV-FSM-DFW), turned around, and flew the same trip back to MCI. Two or three legs into the trip, Bill turned around and said, "Well Tom, you've had plenty of observation time, hop up here and get to work. You can't learn to fly/land this thing observing from the jumpseat." What FAA regulations? I remember that trip like it was yesterday. It was on a Sunday. As I recall (and I could be wrong), Bill's wife was a nurse. He made that trip an experience that left a lifelong impression. Years later, I flew literally hundreds of IOEs with new Captains and First Officers at AA. I was supposed to fly the first leg, and then alternate every other leg with 'em. I'd let 'em fly every leg, if they wanted, or until they needed a break. I always remembered what Bill told me on that CV-580 IOE trip. "You can't learn to fly/land this thing observing..." If you would be so kind as to pass my sympathy onto his family, I'd appreciate it. -Tom Manly (1/31/18) God Bless his family! RIP Mr Bill! -Pat Williams-harter (2/1/18) Always a big smile! -Connie Mcalister (2/1/18) One of the best! Semper Fi and welcome to Valhalla. -Pam Frank Corvelli (2/2/18) A truly fine gentleman! I can get ya out the plane in 90 sec but computers still have me under its key! Hope you can view it & maybe apply it to the memorial for FAL greats! Blessings and thank you for honoring my dad. -Peggy McCaffrey-Calvert (2/12/18) Thank you, Peggy; that is one of the best video memorials I have seen. I added it in a weblink at Bill's memorial webpage: http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Bill_McCaffrey.html I want to add a memorial webpage for Bill's wife Ellen. I was told she was a former Frontier flight attendant. Was she your mom? Do you know her maiden name because I can not find her in my Frontier files? -Jake Lamkins (2/12/18) Thank you so much for doing that to dads page! I believe Ellen’s name was Handly - Handley .. you know my dad legally adopted both her girls, one passed away from breast cancer just like Ellen! Sandy, was at dads funeral Mass on Tuesday. She and her hubby flew in just for it! I can’t wait to share it with the Sibs! -Peggy McCaffrey-Calvert (2/12/18) Thanks, Peggy, for all the info. I'll use it to add to your dad's webpage and to create one for Ellen on the Frontier webpage. My condolences again on your loss. He was an extraordinary man. -Jake Lamkins (2/13/18)
