He died very young so I suspect it was an accident of some kind.

I worked with Bernie at DENMM and anyone that knew him 
will agree that he was a rare character who could keep you laughing. 
He lived out east of Denver and 
was killed in an auto accident on his way home from work. 
Too many of my friends have died that way.
