BARBARA CAGANICH STRIZIC 1961 - 1962 FLIGHT ATTENDANT PHX Pioneering FL pilot Emily Howell Warner's first airplane ride was DEN-GUC on January 30, 1958 when she was 18 years old. Her return GUC-DEN on February 3, 1958 was a turning point in her life. The stewardess took her up to the cockpit to see how the DC-3 operated. Emily recounts in her autobiography how this was a major factor in her decision to become a pilot. -Jake Lamkins Frontier News, Fall 2013 Facebook I'm trying to contact Emily Warner and don't know how. I WAS THE STEWARDESS WHO BROUGHT HER UP TO THE COCKPIT WHEN SHE WAS FLYING ON THE DC3. I'm in the same Frontier Uniform which is on my timeline. I'll never forget the look of excitement when I told her the pilot said I could bring her up to talk to them about flying. She was my only passenger and it was before this wasn't permitted. -Barbara Caganich Strizic (8/26/13) Hi Barbara, put Old Frontier Airlines in the Facebook search and come join us. I saw your post re Emily Warner. Email me at ExFAL.com - I have her contact. What years did you work at Frontier. Were you based in DEN? Was your surname Caganich in your Frontier years? Check out the Frontier website at http://OldFrontierAirlines.com -Jake Lamkins (8/26/13) Hi Jake, thank you. I remember reading about her in the late 70s in the newspaper that she was the first woman pilot. I was busy teaching then and of course no computers. I knew immediately it was my former passenger and was delighted for her but didn't know how to contact her. -Barbara Caganich Strizic (8/26/13) Oh, thank you, thank you,, for Emily's address, I wanted to contact her for a long time. I deeply appreciate your help. Hi Jake, I flew for American and was based in Detroit in 60-61. I returned to my home in Phoenix to finish college at Arizona State. I missed flying and went on with Frontier around 1961 with the understanding I could be based in Phoenix. I had only a few classes to take before receiving my degree. This was fine until I was asked to relieve a stewardess who had gained weight and was put off the line for awhile until they could find a replacement and then later I was asked to go to Billings and I couldn't keep up my classes and resigned in late 1962. I wanted to go back but I married in 1964 and in those years you couldn't be married. Western Airlines, called me before I was to get married and warned me it was my last chance since I was turning 26. I'm amazed as to how everything has changed today. The training with Frontier was not as strict as it was with American but I'll always cherish my experience with both. With Frontier I was able to visit many Western States and all in a DC3 -Barbara Caganich Strizic (8/27/13) Emily was on my flight in 1961, it was Winter - I remember wearing my winter uniform, brown and white. This of course was 60 years ago. I can't express the excitement when I was allowed to bring her up to the cockpit she stumbled getting out of her seat. I just arrived home from being in the hospital, with lung problems due to 4arthritis. I will try to send you the letter she sent me, when I contacted her. I read where it was printed that this trip occurred in 1958, no it didn't in fact I was a full time college student then. -Barbara Caganich Strizic (7/6/20) Emily says in her autobiography she took the trip on Feb 3, 1958 on which the stewardess took her to the cockpit. It was a flight from Gunnison, Colorado to Denver, Colorado. -Jake Lamkins (7/6/20) Not correct, it was 1961. The pilots told me at the end of the flight in Phoenix, that they told her where she could take flying lessons . She probably had the month correct but not the year. I'll try to have my son, forward the letter she sent me. The pilots had the cockpit door open, she expressed interest in observing, so I asked the pilots if she could come up, this was just about the time, FAA put a stop to visitors in the cockpit, but there were no passengers, other than Emily. So it was acceptable, however she spent the entire trip in the cockpit. I'm sorry, that I never followed up and called her, when she sent me her phone number. -Barbara Caganich Strizic (7/6/20) Strizic Family - Facebook on 7/16/21 It's with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of my mother Barbara Caganich Strizic. (8/25/21) Jake Lamkins She was a great lady and is remembered at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Barbara_Caganich_Strizic.html Memorial to Barbara Caganich Strizic Mary Helen Strizic-Hill Thank you so much! My mother was so proud and had so many wonderful stories of her days flying. That time in her life was so important to her and I loved hearing about it. She even saw my father in the airport during that time, never knowing she would run into him again and they would spend 50 years together. Thank you, again! (8/26/21) Mary Helen Strizic-Hill On Monday my mother was put to her final place of rest. My brother and sister in law did a wonderful job granting my mother’s last wish of being at San Luis Rey Mission. Can’t help but to think my mother was a part of the decision making, even after she passed. She’s in the St. Joseph area of the cemetery, near a water feature and crape myrtle trees. It couldn’t be more perfect for her. This loss has been absolutely devastating for all of us and the years to come, especially the year ahead, will be challenging, but I know we’ll get through it with her help. My mother, who was so proud of the days she wore wings on her lapel, now has wings for eternity. Miss and love you, my dear Mama! How do we do this life without you? (9/1/21) Mary Helen Strizic-Hill It’s been a year since I last got to hear your voice, hug you and have the comfort of having my mama. It hasn’t gotten easier, some days even more difficult. Life is just isn’t the same without a mom or a dad. You should still be here with us! Not a day goes by you’re not thought of or missed, my beautiful mama, most generous, unselfish lady with the kindest heart. (7/17/22)
