I'm really sorry to hear about Zick. We had been in touch over the years about things Frontier. Do you have a newspaper obituary? Thanks, -Jake Lamkins (1/15/07) Wife and I are close friends with Zick's wife and when funeral was set up she did not want a notice in paper. She just had my wife notify the retirement group of the info and called other friends. If Zick had any FAL info you might need let me know as his wife will get rid of it I think. Are you the one who does the mechanic memorial list with the pictures? Will the one I sent work ok or I could get another. -Adrian Welter (1/15/07) Posted at the FL Club: DEN mechanic Zick Burns has died. Zick invented the 'crescent and arrow' logo that was used until 1978. -Jake Lamkins (1/15/07) There was no Obituary in the Denver Newspapers. Zick went to work for Monarch Air Lines October 10, 1948 in Denver and worked in aircraft overhaul. His legacy was the designing of the "Crescent" Logo used by Frontier starting in 1959 with the introduction of CV-340 aircraft. He first presented the Logo to management in 1958 when FL was looking at buying F-27's as a replacement for its DC-3s. The Sunliner News, August, 1958 - "Frontiersman" insert shows Zick with a model of an F-27 with his "Boomerang" Logo. The Sunliner News, June-July, 1959 - "Frontiersman" insert has a photo and article of Zick receiving a $500 check from FL's Vice President of Operations Harvey P. Barnard Jr. for designing the Logo and new paint job. Zick took some good natured ribbing over the years because of the similiarity of his design to the "Crescent" on Newport cigarettes, but he always used the the word "Boomerang" - never "Crescent". -Ken Schultz (1/15/07) Re: Zick's Boomarang. I was working FL Paint shop at the time. We made a pounce pattern (a series of pin holes along the outline of the logo. After locating and masking the pattern on the tail of the airplane we could pounce blue chalk, which was contained in a Bull Durham bag, through the holes, then remove the paper pattern and mask and paint the logo. Because of the weight of the gold colored additive the paint would run and leave a black or at the very least a dark line. So, it took a bit of experience to do it right. Since I was the tallest and could reach the top I did most of them. Later, when more changes to paint and interior decor was being contracted I met and worked with the contracted artistes who did the interiors. They were fantasticly fast and accurate and it was a pleasure to work with them. Well, Zick was Zick and we will miss him as all the rest. -Ed Huss (1/16/07) Z.
