VERN CARLSON 1946 - 1976 STEWARD, SALES REPRESENTATIVE, SALES MANAGER, VICE PRESIDENT-PUBLIC AFFAIRS GJT DEN I'm not sure if I qualify as an "alumnus" of Frontier. I only worked for them during the Great Airline Strike of '67, but I grew up at the airports in Durango, Montrose, Grand Junction, and all the various headquarters in Denver. My name is Rick Carlson. (I was the little kid in the cowboy outfit shaking hands with then-Colorado Governor Lee Knous at the Durango airport in front of a DC-3, in a photo that has been in several magazines.) My father was Vern Carlson who "retired" from FAL in 1975. He passed away in 1977. Many of the people and stories from my past had been forgotten until I recently made the decision to sell some my remaining mementoes. While looking on the internet for a place to auction them, I came across a few sites dedicated to the old Frontier. These sites stirred long forgotten memories...most good, some not-so-good. From my first flight in Sept. of 1947 until my last Frontier flight in 1979, the people and their stories will always be a part of me. I was there from the best of times (inaugural flights to new cities and annual picnics at Elitch Gardens) to the worst of times (late nights in the operations center when a plane went down). All of this basically shaped my life, from childhood, college, the Viet Nam war, 'til the present where my wife Penny and I live in Phoenix. My oldest son Chris is 28, married, no kids yet, here in Phoenix. Youngest, Tim, is 22 just moving to an apartment in Phoenix. They really have few memories of the airlines. I currently run an automotive performance parts warehouse and race vehicle manufacturer. Traveling is still a large part of my life as I announce drag races and drag boat races from Washington to Georgia and many points in between. -Rick Carlson (1/12/00) VERNER CARLSON Born 27 Jan 1923 Died May 1976 Age 53 SSN issued in Minnesota -SSDI (2/13/01) Jack Weiss, who was a steward with Monarch Airlines, sent two photos of three crews from 1947. Navy Air in WW2 ask If I wanted a job as flight steward with Monarch so I joined them in early 1947. Jerry Fox was my boss and I seemed to fly a lot with Ben Stewart and Ed McCann. Used to go to the midget races at lakeside with John Myers and Donna. -Dick Faucett (3/27/09) Vern A. I was on duty in ISN that nite Mrs Swenson was waiting In the lobby to meet her husband. Vern and I became good friends. He was in ISN for several meetings for new service, use-it-or-lose-it meetings, etc. Another great guy from the good ol' FL days. -Daryle Holte Former FL employee, ISN EAR SAF LAS HVR (10/15/12) Vern was one of my closest friends. Anybody out there know of him or how he is doing? -Jean Thompson (4/25/13) No, the steward Vern Carlson went on to become vp-public affairs and died in 1976 of a heart attack in his 30th year with FL.
