I called thinking I might make her feel better. I don't know how much my call meant, but she was wonderful and I felt much better after our visit. Mary Alice said there was a plenty of warning. Steve was always in excellent condition. I am sure that is why he ignored the symptoms. He had complained about a severe chest pain and shortness of breath a few days ago. Mary told me that she wanted to call 911, but Steve refused and, in fact, felt better after he had rested for a while. They had gone on a short trip and Steve wanted to go on another, but his wife begged-off. He had not been complaining of any discomfort even though she thought he didn't look good. His color wasn't quite normal. Steve picked up his grand-daughter and they went to Costco for gas. There, apparently Steve ended up driving over a curb and the car stopped. Someone noticed and went over to see what was wrong. His little grand-daughter said "My grandpa fell asleep and I can't wake him up." They tried reviving him, and again at the hospital all to no avail. Ironically, Steve's wife was at the same hospital at the same time they were trying to revive Steve. She is due for a hip replacement. After arriving home, she was greeted by the awful news that Steve had an accident and was dead. While that was, as you might imagine, a very difficult moment, she is doing much better now and has a lot of family and friends around to help her thru this tough time. -Billy Walker (7/15/07)
