LYMAN THOMAS 1947 - 1954 STEWARD, STATION MANAGER DEN GUC February 07, 2003 Lyman Thomas, the last surviving founder of Club 20, the Western Slope's lobbying and promotional organization, is remembered this week as an outstanding citizen dedicated to western Colorado. Mr. Thomas, 76, died Tuesday at his Montrose home. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Montrose Christian Church. "He was a very sharp guy, very aggressive, and was an outstanding citizen for western Colorado," said Dale Hollingsworth of Grand Junction, who succeeded Mr. Thomas as Club 20 secretary and was a friend for more than 45 years. Mr. Thomas and other influential Western Slope residents formed Club 20 to press for equitable highway funding in the state and to protect Western Slope water. At the time, in 1953, most roads connecting Western Slope towns were dirt or gravel and most of the state highway money was consumed by Denver and other Front Range areas. Mr. Thomas served on the committee that selected the route for Interstate 70 from Rifle to Eagle. Mr. Thomas was born in Hotchkiss and served in the Army Air Forces in World War II. After a stint at Colorado State University, then Colorado A&M, Mr. Thomas went to work for Monarch Airlines, first as a pilot and station manager in Gunnison. In 1958, he opened Thomas Graphic Arts, a commercial printing plant in Montrose. His heavy civic involvement included Toastmasters, Masons - including the El Jebel Shrine - and Elks. Survivors include his wife, Lila; daughter, Lennette Traub, of Grand Junction; brothers Charles E. Thomas, of Grand Junction, and Floyd E. Thomas, of Okmulgee, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Shriner's Children Hospital Travel Fund at the El Jebel Temple, 4625 W. 50th Ave., Denver, CO 80212. Services are under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose. -ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS (2/7/03) E-mail to FLolks: I found the attached obituaries on Lyman Thomas who was a Monarch steward and GUC manager.
