LARRY THOMAS 1959 - 1986 STATION AGENT, ASSISTANT STATION MANAGER, STATION MANAGER STL DFW FSM Do you recall the station manager's name at DFW. It was Dick ??. I know Larry Thomas was over the ramp and Ted Simmons was over ticket counter. -Linda Pitts Cherry (12/6/04) Dick Gibson is the DFW manager you're trying to think of. He went to SHV and is still in that area, I think. After DFW, Larry Thomas was manager at FSM and Ted Simmons was at HOU. -Jake Lamkins (12/6/04) Larry Thomas If you have not heard Larry passed away today. Heart attack. No details. -Keith Sturgeon (5/2/12) Bad news Larry Thomas has passed away from a heart attact, about 3 hours ago. I was notified by Otis Edwards just a few moments ago. Don't know any more details but I will keep you advised. -Phil Green (5/2/12) What terrible news! Thanks for letting me know. I have put the word out to the FLamily. -Jake Lamkins (5/2/12) Posted at FLacebook and the FL Club: Just got word Larry Thomas died of a heart attack about four hours ago. Larry held a variety of positions during his 27 year career at CN/FL. He was FSM station manager when FL died and was a main organizer/coordinator of the FYV/FSM FL Reunion for decades. -Jake Lamkins (5/2/12) Oh my God!!!!! I talk to him often when he comes in Sam's where I work. Larry was a great person and friend, he will be missed! RIP my friend -Robert Walker (5/2/12) We sure are sorry to hear this. I had highest regard for Larry. -J C Selph (5/2/12) OH NO, sorry for the news. He was a great person. He was in our Safari Trek Motorhome group and shared some good times at some of our Rally's. We will miss him very much. GOD Speed and GOD Bless, Larry!!! Sure lots of gone west'ers lately. Live every day like it is your last, It may just be. -Ron Herring (5/2/12) It is with heavy heart I respond to learning of Larry's passing. He & I started with CN in STL within a month of each other. He befriended me and we had a great friendship for the rest of our careers. I am especially glad I made the FYV/FSM Pignic last August and had the opportuntiy to visit with Larry. My sincere condolences go to Sue, his wife, and family. Sue was a Braniff Ticket Agent when they met in STL and later married. -Jim Mustain (5/2/12) Another good man gone ahead of us .... he ran a great station, one of the best on the FAL system ... sure miss those FSM 580 layovers and the great FSM station people ... -Phil Stallings (5/2/12) Had Larry had heart problem? -Harold Maxwell (5/3/12) Not that I had heard. -Jake Lamkins (5/3/12) Sure was a shock to hear about Larry. I didn't realize he was that old. He Seemed much younger. I remember him From the days he was at GSW, and always Enjoyed visiting with him at the Reunion. A good man, he will be Missed -Bill Guthrie (5/5/12) Larry and I almost "bought the farm" together on a DC-3 back in 1959. He was non-revving from STL to FSM on a flight that Sam Scott & I were crew on. Somewhere between STL and HRO the prop anti-icing alcohol system plugged up and then we really started icing up. Long story short; we ended up going to the closest airport with decent weather: SGF. Pulled max power on those engines for about 20 minutes finally holding altitude at about 900' above the ground and at 70 kts. Had 5" of ice on the landing light covers, etc. Next day when Sam and I were ferrying it to FTW the right engine threw craps at the first power reduction and we came back. Leonard Pratt came up to ferry it back a few days and an engine change. It was said you could tell about when the left engine failed. That's when they notified the station at FYV to change their ETA for FTW to an hour later! I remember Larry as a quiet, soft spoken, really nice guy. The leaves are falling. -Frosty Frost (5/6/12) A shock. I'm getting ready to go to FSM tonight. -Rusty Lambert (5/6/12) I knew Larry a long long time and I never heard him say anything bad about anyone. Even more extraordinary, I never heard anyone say anything bad about him, including dozens of FLolks whom he supervised at Frontier. That is truly remarkable! When FYV closed in January 1982, Larry immediately fixed me up with employee parking at FSM since I was commutting to DEN as ALEA Master Chairman. Then there were the decades he helped organize the FYV-FSM Picnic (after 1986 it was a reunion) and kept it going. Can't say enough good things about him. -Jake lamkins (5/7/12) Posted at FLacebook and the FL Club: FSM station manager Larry Thomas' memorial webpage is posted. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Larry_Thomas.html They don't come much better than Larry! Post your remembrances. -Jake Lamkins (5/11/12) Really like what you did for Larry with that great memorial on Facebook. -Robert Walker (5/12/12) FLacebook posting with Dick Newberry's model 737: This Boeing 737-200 model aircraft gifted by TUL station manager Dick Newberry brought back memories. https://www.ebay.com/itm/264115310484?ul_noapp=true When FYV closed on Jan 31, 1982, I commuted from various cities for 4 years. The first 2 years I did it through FSM where station manager Larry Thomas made it possible for me to use employee airport parking. Then FSM closed in 1984 and I had to use TUL to commute to FYV. Dick Newberry helped me with employee airport parking there. So I salute two swell guys who lent me a hand when I needed it. It was a common thing in Frontierland! -Jake Lamkins (1/3/19) Facebook on 5/2/22 Sue Thomas 10 Years ago we lost his Earthly Presence…..But can still feel him hovering around us…. 10 Years of Missing that Larry Laughter.
