LARRY SILLS 1959 - 1971 SALES REPRESENTATIVE, DISTRICT SALES MANAGER, VP - SALES & MARKETING DEN Lawrence C. Sills was Vice President - Sales & Marketing per a June 23, 1970 interoffice memo. -Jake Lamkins (8/4/05) Larry Sills was a close and personal friend and my boss and mentor after Vern Carlson went into the home office. Larry died at the age of 39 in Denver, it was a heart attack and it happened while he was talking to his wife Donna, (Bunny) on the telephone. This would have been in October of 1971. Larry at the time was the head of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Denver. He also was part of the purging going on after Al Feldman took over. I saw his wife on several occasions in Denver as she was working in Continental's reservation office but that was at least 20 years ago. HIs oldest son Chris had open heart surgery when he was approximately 4 years old. It was great working for Lew Dymond (the best president Frontier ever had), Paul Burke, Larry Sills, Ken Smith and Tom Makurat. -Herb Schmidt (8/4/05) Larry Sills My first job when I joined Frontier in July 1963 was in the Denver Consolidated Reservation Office as a telephone Reservationist in Hanger 5 at Stapleton.... I stayed here for about 13 months. Larry at this time was Sales Manager for Frontier.......NOBODY ASKED HIM TO DO THIS.......but during "Air Travel" holidays LARRY with several of his subordinate sales Reps in tow would show up in our office and pitch in answering the phone lines ( which came into the office from SLC, PHX, ABQ, BIL, GJT,COS,DEN, OMA & MCI ) for 3 or 4 hours at a time. I am positive that none of his Sales Reps would have ever shown up here on their own......These surprise visit of Larry's probably did not have too much effect on the people phoning in.......But it did have a marvelous effect on the personnel in the office who suddenly realized that yes indeed one of the Top Brass in the company did appreciate the job this office did ! And he showed his appreciation by rolling up his sleeves and pitching in without any regard or concern for personal reward or notoriety ! A few years later when I became a System Relief Agent, Larry was the only person in company management to take the time to send me a letter of congratulations. In my book Larry came across as an individual who exuded unabashed enthusiasm for the product he was marketing which was Frontier Airlines ! Once he sensed fellow employee(s) on the same page with him...... There was nothing that he would not do to help or support those employees. Tragically from the beginning of time in governments and industries composed of more than just a few people. There always seem to be individuals who never pass up the opportunity to make sacrificial offerings of the "Larry Sills" in their organization whom they feel are standing in the middle of the path to their personal goal ? Sadly Larry was standing in the path of just such a "false alarm" who indeed rose to great heights ( "Office" ) within FAL once he engineered Larry's demise. As you might expect, the fellow who accomplished this dastardly deed, never contributed in his long career with the company one "Iota" towards Frontier's success that Larry did in his far too brief career ! -Bob Pearson (11/2/05) L.
