KEN STEWART 1956 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT FSM FYV ICT FAT SCK TUL Posted at the FL Club: Thanks for the memories. Those TT machines were really something. Remember when the computers came into vogue, it was really a revelation? The Telco guys were on call practically non-stop at times with the old TTs and the computers were great, especially for reservations. Shirley could put her own res in the computer, whereas she had to poke them thru the slot in the window for the TT operator to type. Any of the old res people on here that remember the space charts, etc which were kept at central res in DFW (or GSW, FTW or wherever we were at the time (of course, that was the old Central Airlines, but anyone who was with FL or OZ or NC or any of the airlines of that day would remember much the same procedure. Ken Stewart P.S. Jon Don Sluder, Jack Chambers and any others of the old CN gang wud remember those days. If Jeannie Eller is on here she wud remember as she worked res b4 going into the flight attendant program, where she was until the demise of FL. -Ken Stewart (8/26/04 Posted at the FL Club: I, too, was with FL until the bitter end, starting at FSM on 12 Oct 56. Knew Bill V well as he was also with CN/FL and also knew him and his wife thru other endeavors. I worked at FSM/FYV for CN, then FYV/ICT/FAT (as long as it was on-line) SCK and ended up SSA in TUL until 26 Aug 86, with FL. -Ken Stewart (11/24/04) Posted at the FL Club: Subject: FL Club "MEMORIES' Thought some of the FL family and particularly old CNites would be interested in the comments of my long-time friend and local FYV historian in the Northwest Arkansas Times of today, Sunday, January 30, 2005. "There was a lot of activity down at Drake Field in Fayetteville on January 11, 1955 (fifty years ago) when three special DC-3 airplanes landed, one of which was to be christened "The City of Fayetteville." Governor-elect Orville Faubus, Congressman Jim Trimble and Dr. John Tyler Caldwell (then president of the Unversity of Arkansas) served as the dedication committee. The event marked the launching of Central Airlines' partnership with Fayetteville to establish scheduled airline flights out of the city. This was the first commercial airline operation in Northwest Arkansas and marked the successful progress the Fayetteville community had made to tie Northwest Arkansas with other larger metropolitan centers in the Southwest. Central, a major Midwest airline, would be the regional carrier. The president of the airline (Keith Kahle) was present along with Mayor Roy Scott and Jim Kays, who acted as master of ceremonies. My notes: On the noted date, I was serving in the U. S. Army at Ladd Air Force Base (now Fort Wainwright), Fairbanks, Alaska. I do remember the occasion getting rather large press coverage when I received my copies of the NWA Times several weeks later via slow-boat U S Mail (this was the way the subscription was handled in those days). Having lived in the area and witnessed the growth of Drake Field from a small dirt strip used for training ROTC cadets from the U of A and U S Army Air Force (as it was then known) trainees for WWII, I was very interested. -Ken Stewart (1/30/05) You oughta retire, Ken. Where are you working at now? -Jake Lamkins (1/31/05) I am with a contract security firm handling Tyson security at their plant. -Ken Stewart (2/1/05) FL Club Re Knee probllems Hey Mac--Ken Stewart here. Worked with you in SCK briefly. Just wondering if you kno the whereabouts of any of the SCK crew these days. I think Al Hepner is on the exfal net but have heard nothing from him. We had some good guys up there although I do not recall the names too well anymore (something to do with age, I guess). We are back in FYV, do you ever get to Okla, as I recall you had some relatives over there. -Ken Stewart (6/26/05) Re FL closing: Lots of advance notice, huh. I had worked until 2300 or 2330 (do not remember which anymore) on Saturday nite, was awoken about 0400 by TUL SM Dick Newberry. He advised that FL had officially shut down. There had been no indication of anything impending when we closed the evening flights out on Sat nite. Oh well, it was a good ride for my 30 years with CN/FL. Wish you and others cud have made the FYV/FSM "Pignic" last weekend but it was well attended, considering. Johnny Matthews came with Rusty Lambert. Rusty has been there before but had not seen Johnny since the closure. -Ken Stewart (8/25/05) Re photo of first CN FYV terminal: Yep! That is definitely the first commercial terminal that Central Airlines moved into when starting service to FYV. I do not recognize any of the persons pictured, however. Mitch is about the only one that I can recall locally who worked at that terminal, although it is possible that either Joe Max or Arman may have started here way back when. I know Doyle Osborne worked in that term and I worked there very briefly when I xferred from FSM in 1960. It is possible that Mitch might recognize some of the faces pictured. -Ken Stewart (12/28/05) FL Club: Tho officially retired, I went back to work (in Security). My wife still works so what else to do? With the price of gas going up! up! up!, the income comes in handy. -Ken Stewart (6/10/08) FL Club My 50th anniversary Congratulations on ur anniversary. I did hv u beat some as I started at FSMCN Oct 12, 1956. So w/be 53 yrs in Oct. Joe Jones was STM there at the time, he was followed by Tom Lamb. I transferred to FYV in Jan 60 replacing S/A Bob Irvin when he went in the USAF aftr finishing College at U of A. Last I knew, Bob was flying jets for AA between DFW and SFO but hv not heard for sev years so he very well may hv retired. Of course, as I am sure u kno, Tom Lamb and wife Florence are both now deceased and I imagine Joe Jones also but hv not heard. When he left CN he went into the insurance business and later moved to PHX area. Would you believe that I had not even realized until ur message that my 50-year Airline anniversary had come and gone. -Ken Stewart FSM/FYV/ICT/ FAT/SCK/TUL (7/10/09) On 11 April 2009, I achieved my 76th birthday. A few days ago I saw an article which I felt expressed my philosophy of life as I have tried to live and handle situations. Knowing that I have failed many times, at least I have tried. I will try to paraphrase this philosophy: Life is full of imperfect things...and imperfect people. I have learned over the years that learning to accept each other's faults - and choosing to celebrate each other's differences - is one of the most important keys to creating healthy, growing and lasting relationships. My prayer for you today is that you will learn to take the good, the bad and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. In the end, He is the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where the smallest hill does not become an insurmountabel mountain. We could extend this to any relationship - as understanding is the basis of any relationship, be it a husband-wife, parent-child, partner-partner or friendship! Amen. -Ken Stewart (8/27/09) Thought I would let you know that Ken ia in ICU at WRMC with pneumonia among other problems. -Florence Stewart (8/6/10) Florence phoned at 2330 and told me Ken was suffering from a variety of ailments and was on a ventilator in ICU. She has not seen him awake since he went in a week or so ago. He had quit eating very much at home and got weak. Not really sure what the basic problem is. Ken is 77 years old now. Visitors not encouraged. -Jake Lamkins (8/6/10) As of 8/14 Ken has been at Regency Rehab Hospital located in the old Washington Hospital at College and North. He is in room 409. Visiting hours are 8-8. He is improving slowly and may be there for some time yet. Park on the upper deck, go in thru the old lobby to the first bank of elevators. Go to the 4th floor, turn right. There is a sign on the right saying to rooms 401/410. Phone 479-713-7000 -Florence Stewart (8/31/10) Dory Beecham phoned to tell me about Ken Stewart's death. His wife Florence had moved to assisted living during his illness and had lost most of her phone numbers. Florence asked Dory to call me so I could let the FLamily know. The funeral will be Monday at 2 pm. He had been ill since August and was in a lot of pain. -Jake Lamkins (11/25/10) Posted at the FL Club: Subject: Another death in the FLamily KEN STEWART 1956 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT FSM FYV ICT TUL FAT SCK Ken passed away this morning. Services are planned for 2 pm next Monday. No cause of death but he had been ill for over three months. Ken was 77 years old, I believe. -Jake Lamkins (11/25/10) Hate to hear that. I remember when we use to blow cigar smoke into the ops room just to agravate him. -Jim Camp (11/25/10) I worked with Ken when I was in FYV. He was GREAT person and friend. -Buddy Griffin (11/26/10) Sorry to hear of Ken's passing. He hired on a little before me so I knew him all the years I was at CN/FL. A fine person and a great benefit to the airlines. (See past post re. Max Gardner) -HA "Frosty" Frost (11/28/10) I attended Ken's viewing today. I visited with his widow Florence a few minutes. She said an MRI revealed Ken had a stroke which caused the hiccups. He didn't seek medical attention for three weeks and by then his kidneys were going and complications set in. It was downhill after that. She had had phones calls from Kathie Fahrenholz and Dory Beecham. She and Ken were married in May, 1964 and had 46 years together. Ken's stepson Harold Thomas "Tom" died 7/23/97 at age 40 from a heat stroke while mowing the yard. -Jake Lamkins (11/29/10) K M STEWART Station agent seniority date of 10/12/56, emp# 08149, on the 1/1/86 FL/ALEA seniority date. -Jake Lamkins (12/3/10) Remembering both of my fathers this Father's Day - Harold Killgore, who shared blue eyes, blood type and mad accounting skills with me. He died way too young and I wish I had more memories of him. Ken Stewart, who took two young kids into his heart, gave us his name and treated Tom and me as if we were his own flesh and blood. He shared his love of music and travel with me and taught me so much about caring and doing the right thing. He also died too soon and I still miss him. -Betsy Gray (6/16/13) Posted at FLacebook and FL Club: FYV senior station agent Ken Stewart's memorial webpage has been updated. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ken_Stewart.html Added four items. -Jake Lamkins (9/2/13) Thanks, Jake! -Betsy Gray (9/2/13) I recall Ken. I worked at FAT July - October '83. Last saw Ken at SCK fall '84. He was a very good man. -Mike Gordon (3/30/18) Ken became a security guard after FL and worked til nearly his flight west. He got the hiccups which would not go away and became very ill. A post mortem indicated a stroke led to his demise. I worked with him from 1964-82 and have rarely met a more conscientious man. -Jake Lamkins (3/30/18) FLacebook Frontier Memorial Webpage Updated KEN STEWART 1956 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT FSM FYV ICT FAT SCK TUL http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Ken_Stewart.html A photo added and webpage updated. -Jake Lamkins (1/11/21)
