JOHN SCOTT 1959 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT DEN DSM CID We've emailed before, but it's been quite sometime. I actually wanted to ask you about a fellow who worked at Frontier named John Scott. From what I gather he was an agent in Denver here, and I figured if anyone had known him, it would be you. I happened across a photo of him and Al Feldman the other day in an antique mall here in Denver, and the owner told me he thought he passed away last year. As soon as I can confirm if he has "gone west" or not, I was going to let you know so you could add his name to the obituary page. Thanks, -Greg Stearns (1/27/05) Yes, I knew John many years. We worked for ALEA a long time too. I've heard nothing of his death. Last I heard he was at John P. Scott 1904 S. Downing Street Denver, CO 80210 -Jake Lamkins (1/27/05) My parents both worked at Frontier, Gus and Pam Stearns. My mom was a Flight Attendant and my Dad a pilot, my Dad was there about twenty years. I've been collecting Frontier stuff for quite sometime, and recently found some stuff here in Denver and a few of the items had belonged to John Scott, someone I hadn't known but figured you probably did because I think I had read in the past where you had been involved with ALEA. I want to confirm John's passing, and when I get details I will pass them on to you so you can add him to the obituaries. -Greg Stearns (1/28/05) Definitely let me know if you find out something about John. He was a great guy who did a lot of good. -Jake Lamkins (1/28/05) Posted at the FL Club: Checking on a possible death in the FLamily. I got an email from the son of a FL pilot who collects FL memorabilia. He said he recently bought some FL items at a sale in DEN. Some of them had been owned by DEN station agent and ALEA officer John Scott. The seller told him he thought John had died last year. I have been unable to substantiate it. Does anybody have any info about John? -Jake Lamkins (1/28/05) I have info for you on John Scott... He was killed a year ago on Valentines day, so just over a year now. I thought you might like to add him to the obituaries page.... from what I understand he was a nice fellow who enjoyed working in the travel industry. I did buy some Frontier stuff that belonged to him, and the folks I bought it from were happy it went to an appreciative home. I told them I would make sure his name was added to the Frontier obits. -Greg Stearns (2/26/05) Hi Greg, How was John killed? Do you have an obituary or anything? -Jake Lamkins (2/27/05) I got this info from the person I bought the Frontier memorabilia from, so although it is second hand, I believe it to be accurate. From what I gather, John had a guy staying with him where he lived, who was helping him do some remodeling and housework he was doing. It sounds like John was trying to do the right thing, letting this guy stay in exchange for a little help. Apparently, what he didn't know was that this individual became violent when he drank, and came home one night after a few drinks and, as it was put to me, "beat poor John to death." The following day he was supposed to meet a friend for lunch, didn't show, and his friend found him in his house. The police found the guy responsible and I guess he's set to stand trial here in the next few months. I asked the antique dealer if there was an obituary, but he didn't know. So I went to the library and looked, and found nothing. Then later I found out John was single, never married, no children and no next of kin. His good friend who found him was the executor of his estate, and the money collected from it was going to a few charities. The antique dealer is a mover and helped in the process of the estate sale, where I suppose his furniture and such was sold. John had worked at Frontier and then a few travel agencies here in Denver for so long, that he had a lot of related memorabilia, and neither of these men really knew what to do with it. Finally when the estate had to close and they came down to crunch time, the dealer just put some of the stuff for sale at his antique mall, which is where I happened upon it. I helped him price a lot of it and told him what it was, and he was grateful for the help. He had a nice photo of John standing with Al Feldman, and I told the dealer I would like to take it to the state historical society, and put it with a lot of the other photos that Ken Schultz donated. Again, I didn't know John but it sounded to me like he was a nice person who enjoyed his work, and was well liked by all who knew him. Let me know if you need anything else, -Greg Stearns (2/28/05) Email to Carolyn Boller & Frank Monheiser: I wanted to forward this to yall and see if you knew anything about John's death. -Jake Lamkins (2/28/05) Are we sure this is the John Scott we knew? I would like to see the picture that Greg bought. I've not seen anything in the paper about it. Although John did work for a travel agency or maybe more then one. -Carolyn Boller (2/28/05) Sorry Jake........this is the first I heard of it......... -Frank Monheiser (3/1/05) After receiving your e-mail about the death of John Scott, I made some inquiries to the Denver District Attorney's office and have received the following information: On 2/14/2004 the police and parametics were called to the 1900 block of Downing regarding an injured man. They discovered an injured and bloody person. In checking the house, the found John on the bathroom floor with a major head trama and a knife on the floor. John was pronounced dead at 3:45am by the parametics at the house. The person I spoke with at the DA's office had only a summary file on this case so she was not sure what effect the knife may have had on this murder if any. She said that it appears the head trauma and the beating were the reasons for the death. William Clair, who was living in the house, orginally told police his roommate (John) had just gone crazy and a fight resulted. After Clair was taken to the hospital for wound treatment he was arrested and has been charged with the murder of John and is currently in jail. He has a motion hearing on March 22,2005 and no trial date has been set. For some reason, this has really gotten to me even though I've not seen or heard from John in 20 years. Maybe because it's I bought my house from John and Howard in 1976 and at that time I spent a good deal of time with them. -Carolyn Boller (3/2/05) Thank you so much for your help. What a horrible thing to find out. I have so many memories of John and how helpful he always was with union matters. And he put together the entire computer system at ALEA HQs. Do you have a photo of him in your files that you could email me? -Jake Lamkins (3/2/05) Posted at the FL Club: I've been investigating John's death for awhile and Carolyn Boller got confirmation. Thanks to Greg Stearns for bringing John's murder to my attention. Greg is the son of FL Gus and flight attendant Pam Stearns. Greg found some of John's FL memorabilia for sale and became curious about John. Here's the sad, sad story that Carolyn emailed today: "After receiving your e-mail about the death of John Scott, I made some inquiries to the Denver District Attorney's office and have received the following information: On 2/14/2004 the police and parametics were called to the 1900 block of Downing regarding an injured man. During his career he was the ALEA Master Chairman and held many other union positions. For a time, he was on union leave and was a director at ALEA HQs in Chicago. -Jake Lamkins (3/2/05) I really hate to hear this, I worked in GJT when John worked for the REA and the local Television station in Grand Junction. I lived in a bachelor pad with John, John Morris, and Dick Cummings. We really had some experiences and most were good. It is unusual that three of the four of us have passed away. It is also interesting that two met with violent deaths. -Ted Simmons (3/2/05) Thanks for sharing the disturbing information regarding John Scott. A tragic loss of life of a good person. Thoughts go out to the family and friends of John. -Bill Thiets (3/2/05) Social Security Death Index John SCOTT Birth Date: 27 Nov 1937 Death Date: 14 Feb 2004 Age 66 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Colorado Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 80210 Localities: Denver, Denver, Colorado -SSDI (3/2/05) Email to Ken Schultz: Hi Ken, I got word that John P. Scott was murdered last year in February in DEN. You may have known John - he was a longtime DEN station agent and senior station agent who was also ALEA Master Chairman at one time and, for several years, was on union leave working at ALEA HQs in Chicago. I found a reference to his death being 2/14/04 in the SSDI. Carolyn Boller found out about the death thru the prosecuting attorney's office. Do you recall seeing anything in the newspaper about the murder and/or an obituary? -Jake Lamkins (3/3/05) I worked on the Denver ticket counter in 1966 and left in 1968 to marry my husband, Bob Lawson. Bob continued with FL til the end and we both worked with John. We are just shocked and saddened to hear about John. Strange how we never heard about it when it happened. -Carol Lawson (3/3/05) News Release Back to News Releases Articles February 24, 2004 Contact: Lynn Kimbrough, 720-913-9025 Man Charged with Murder Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. filed charges today in the death of a Denver man on Valentines Day. That's probably why nobody caught the news. That is just too terrible. A dreadful fate for anyone, and you're right, Jake, I'm sure if we had heard the name, it would have rung a bell. -Mary Pat Simpson (3/4/05) I started working with John when the CN-FL merger took place and I was driving the "dingy bus" on the AM ramp shift in Denver. John was the co-ordinator in the old FAA tower that FL used to monitor the FL gates on A-Concourse at Stapleton. All the Senior agents, comissary van, maintenance, and the dingy bus had 2-way radios that were used to communicate with the tower re any loads, mech problems pertaining to flt ops. Each radio had a number (12-13-14-15-etc)instead of using names to identify the user. Thinking back on John and his banter on the radio reminds me of Robin Williams in "Good Morning Viet Nam". He kept the operations of the day from being dull and was able to take a lot of stress out of the sometimes stressful day. During lulls in the schedule he sometimes passed along trivia and such that cheered up the team. Once however some of the extra trivia got out and I had to shut off the radio to keep from customers getting in on some of the inside operations. John and I had our own secret number that we agreed should be used when some of the odd banter was to kept private from the customers. John was known and respected by all in Denoo for his duty to the job and his responsibilities that he took on as a member of ALEA . It's always sad to hear of an old FL friend "flying west" but so tragic to hear the reason he left. Rest in Peace dear friend. -Jim Lane (3/7/05) SCOTT RETURNS John Scott, director of computer services at headquarters, has returned to Frontier Airlines - first as a part-time station agent at DSM and now SSA at CID. John was Frontier Master Chairmen when he went on union leave ten years ago to become regional director. Welcome back, John! -FL/ALEA Newsletter, Jul/Aug 1983 Sent by Tom Harding's widow, Yvonne. -Jake Lamkins (4/5/05) The article about John Scott really set me back in my chair. As you noted in the Spring issue - brutal and unnecessary for such a talented and dedicated ALEA & FL employee. I worked with him in ALEA over 20 years. -Don Wright, Mentor MN (10/6/05) Posted at the FL Club Updated memorial webpage JOHN SCOTT 1959 - 1986 STATION AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT DEN DSM CID http://DENFL. tripod.com/ John_Scott. html I found several more items about John. Does anyone have any info about his murderer's trial? -Jake Lamkins (1/6/09) Email to DEN District Attorney's Office: My friend John Scott was murdered in February, 2004. William Clare was accused of the crime. I am unable to find the status of Clare's case on the internet. Can you tell me the status of the case against William Clare? Thank you, -Jake Lamkins (10/11/10) Dear Mr. Lamkins, Thank you for your inquiry, and my condolences on the loss of your friend. William Clare was found guilty of second degree murder by a Denver jury on October 18, 2006. He was sentenced to the maximum of 28 years in prison plus five years of mandatory parole. On April 15, 2010, Clare filed a motion for reconsideration of his sentence. This motion was denied, his sentence of 28 years stands. Ernie-Ernie Van Winkle (10/12/11) John's ashtray came up for sale at Ebay.com in Oct 2013 To Ebay seller: You might be interested in some background on the owner of your ashtray. John P. Scott was a friend of mine for many years. We both worked at Frontier Airlines. John was a senior station agent and official with the airline agents' union. He worked for Frontier from 1959 - 1986 when the airline closed. John was murdered in Denver Feb 14, 2004. His memorial webpage is at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/John_Scott.html The ashtray itself dates from somewhere between 1964 and 1978. Those are the years that Frontier used that logo. I'm curious how you got the ashtray - estate sale? More info on Frontier is at the website http://OldFrontierAirlines.com Good luck with your sale. -Jake Lamkins (10/27/13) Thank you so much for the information and yet it is so sad. I volunteer at the Cancer Discovery Shop in San Diego. This was donated and I purchased it since I thought it was so midcentury. I worked for PSA and then USAirways so love things having to do with airlines. I figured this was old and from the original airline so just thought a collector might like it. Again thank you so much for taking the time and for having a great friendship. -Janet (10/28/13) Posted at FLacebook and the FL Club: DEN senior station agent John Scott's memorial webpage has been updated. http://FAL-1.tripod.com/John_Scott.html Three items added. -Jake Lamkins (11/5/13)
