The field was deactivated in September, 1945 and transferred to the state of Arizona. A quit claim deed for it-was given Pinal county. The board of supervisors leased the field to the Santa Rita Land Development Co, headed by Pete Waggoner of Tucson. for a manufacturing plant The company headed by Hal Darr, who is also president of Frontier Airlines, operated five primary flight training schools during World War II. One was located in Chicago, one in Oklahoma, and three in southeastern states. Darr was a World War I pilot and has been active in aviation circles ever since. Beiser, with 23 years' experience in aviation, has been connected with the base management. "It was our Frontier Airlines love with Tucson," Beiser said, "that led us to select Marana for our southwestern flight training school." They received their Air Force contract for the school June 1, 1951. -Tucson Daily Citizen on July 21, 1951 (3/12/16) In WWII, what's now Pinal Air Park was the Marana Basic Flying School for cadets training to become pilots. Pinal County took over in 1948, leasing the property to various tenants. With the Korean War in full swing, the old air base was reactivated in 1951 by Darr-Aero-Tech. A new generation of Air Force cadets began passing through. Beiser Aviation Corp. assumed the lease after Darr founder Hal Darr died in 1956. In 1961, it all became Marana Air Park, which was sold in 1966 to Intermountain Aviation. a front for the CIA. Evergreen bought Intermountain in 1975 and took over the air park lease two years later. -http://tucson.com/lifestyles/opinion (3/12/16) Frank was another one of Hal Darr's Chicago friends.
