Information taken from THE CONVAIR TWINS by Gary L. Killion (Thanks to Frank Meyer for the book)

*N73130 crashed GRI 12/21/62 - total loss

Jake, Good job on the chart. Although "130" crashed at GRI, I was told that the nose section was salvaged and was used for the only CV- 580 simulator ever made; Frontier's. Maybe someone else can confirm or correct this info. If so, then it certainly wasn't a total loss even though we sometimes cussed that infernal machine while we were sweating away on a checkride!

Jake & Frosty, I believe Frosty is correct regarding 130. The book I sent does identify each CV-580 & it's history. I don't think it will mention being converted to the simulator. George Maillet (deceased) was the genuis who created the mod; but, Don Thiele should be able to confirm.
-Frank Meyer
(11/10/03)

The Aug 1959 Frontier newsletter reports that a CV340 simulator had been leased from United. The Jan/Feb 1966 FL newsletter says the simulator had been extensively modified to be a CV580 simulator at a cost of $200,000. There is an unconfirmed report that UA built the CV340 simulator from a United CV340 aircraft that crashed in a cornfield.
