CHARLEY SOUTHERLAND 1952 - 1986 STATION AGENT, RELIEF AGENT, SENIOR STATION AGENT, STATION MANAGER FMN SAD TUS SAN PHX My mother, Marion Southerland, passed away on March 20, 2003. She worked for Frontier Airlines in the early 1950s as a reservationist. She met my father, Charley Southerland, a Phoenix Senior Agent and they were married July 31, 1957. We just had her Memorial Service today and were thinking about how to let some of the other Frontier friends know. Her obituary ran in the Arizona Republic on March 23 and can be viewed on-line at azcentral.com in the obituaries for that date. -Debbie Southerland Fischer (4/12/03) Posted at the FL Club: Marion Southerland has died. Marion was a PHX reservation agent in the 1950s. She married Charley Southerland, PHX senior station agent, in 1957. Their daughter sent this obituary: (4/12/03) Thank you so much, Jake, for posting the information regarding my mother, Marion Southerland and for allowing me to be a part of your group. Frontier Airlines was very much a part of my family and my own growing up years, and knowing that you are there brings much comfort to our family. -Debbie Southerland Fischer (4/12/03) I am enclosing $35 for a subscription renewal and for the PHX Accident report. I was on duty when the accident occurred on 4/21/57. I was a PHX station agent from 8/20/52 til the end I am still working at Alaska Airlines reservations part time. I'm still working on retiring but just can't decide to hang it up. I will be 74 Feb 28 and as long as my health holds, I will keep on. -Charley Southerland, Phoenix AZ (5/10/03) I know it is a little late but please renew my subscription to Frontier News. I do look forward to receiving the paper. After I read it I turn it over to my daughter to read. She best remembers the DC3 taking her from SAD to see her grandmother in PHX. Can remember when she was a toddler we drove over to visit and then she and I had to fly back to SAD to retrieve her blanket. When we arrived at TUS to deplane, fuel and board more passengers, she said, "lookie, Daddy, that little red truck beat us to TUS." (It was the refueling truck.) I retired from Alaska Airlines in the Fall of 2004, after 10 years. A lot like Frontier but not quite the same. Enjoy all about the paper, but sad to see the obits. Charley Southerland (3/9/07) C R SOUTHERLAND Station agent seniority date of 8/25/52, emp# 08048, #9, on the 1/1/86 FL/ALEA seniority list. -Jake Lamkins (3/26/09) My name is Charley Southerland and I worked for the real Frontier from July of 1952 until the end. I worked in FMN PHX SAD CFT SAN, and as a relief agent in TUS LAX. Would like to also meet up with old FAL friends. -Facebook Post (3/15/10) After completing my agent training in DEN in early 1953 I was assigned to FMN. Looking for a place to live it was recommended that I talk to Bob who as well as being an agent managed an old home that had rooms to rent. It was a sad looking place but one couldn't be very picky in 1953 FMN. I believe nine of us lived in the house and while people came and went almost all worked for Frontier. Frankly, the place was a three ring circus and Bob was the ringmaster who tried to maintain order in the midst of chaos. Among those who lived there were Charlie Southerland, Gerry Bacon and my friend and roommate Fletcher Huskey [when he was a humble agent]. In his soft spoken way Bob made sure we kept the place reasonably clean, oversaw our group dinner, made sure we worked in our very sad vegetable garden out back and generally refereed when we were close to killing each other. Bob became a good friend, and to my recollection without exception everyone truly respected him. -Ira Kemp (7/22/11) This is Charley Southerland's daughter, Debbie.
