CARL POHLAD CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD 1962 - 1963 GSW I found out Carl had flown west while working on the memorial webpage for F. Kirk Johnson. In obtaining a postponement of a hearing in the Kansas - Oklahoma air route case involving the two lines it was revealed to the Civil Aeronautics board a majority of the stock in Central has recently been acquired by Carl R. Pohlad, Minneapolis banker. CAB was advised Pohlad had acquired Central majority stock from F. Kirk Johnson of Fort Worth and is hopeful of merging with Ozark. Both local-carrier service lines serve Missouri. A hearing on disputed routes was scheduled to start Thursday. CAB granted the postponement request in view of the merger negotiations which it was said are in the advanced stage. Ozark serves points in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee and Nebraska. Central serves cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Colorado. CAB made the postponement to a later date so talks for a merger can be carried on which would obviate the dispute of the two lines for certain routes at this time. -The Kansas City Times, May 8, 1962 (11/10/17) Aviation Week & Space Technology June 4, 1962 Merger talks between Central Airlines and Ozark Air Lines are still in progress with agreement expected shortly. Meanwhile. Curtis L. Carlson. Minneapolis businessman, has joined Carl R. Pohlad (AW May 14, p. 40) in purchasing controlling interest in Central, -https://archive.org/stream/Aviation_Week_1962-06-04/Aviation_Week_1962-06-04_djvu.txt (11/12/17) Merger was on Ozark's mind in the sixties, as in 1962 and again 1966 the company told the Civil Aviation Board (CAB) that it was talking with Central Airlines about combining forces. Central was another local-service airline operating in the OK/TX/KS/CO/AR region with Convairs and DC-3s. The 1966 proposal planned to retain the Ozark title as the combined name and would have added 41 cities and three states to the route map. In both cases talks were halted prior to consumation and the airlines went their own way. Central would merge with Frontier in 1967, while OZ would enjoy almost another twenty years of independence. -http://iidbs.com/ozark/ozhist60.htm (11/13/17) It would be interesting to know the extent of the Ozark merger with Carl's decision to buy control. The May 7, 1962 article mentions his buying the Central stock, yet the Jun 1962 item states it took place May 24. I cannot find when this first Ozark merger was called off but it may have precipitated his decision to sell out. -Jake lamkins (11/13/17) FLacebook - FL Club FLight West: Carl Pohlad GSW chairman of the board Carl Pohlad's memorial webpage is posted at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/Carl_Pohlad.html He owned controlling interest in Central Airlines for ten months in 1962 and 1963. Later, he was involved with Frank Lorenzo and other airlines. -Jake Lamkins (11/14/17) After more than 20 years the McKaughans accepted an offer from Carl Pohlad and Minnesota Enterprises, Inc (MEI) to purchase Trans-Texas Airways. They finalized the deal in 1968. Jet Capital Corp., owned by Frank Loreno, purchased the airline in 1972.
